  1. I used to work up there, and have many good local friends who tried to take me several times. Ma Nature always won out and we never ever got there. I had posted quite a few attempt logs on the cache page. I hope the cachers take some time in Albany to meet some locals. Ed Metatawabin and his wife Joan would be the greatest people for them to meet. Ed built his home from logs he dragged out of the Albany River. Wishing them luck and a safe trip! Bushland airways out of Moosonee would be a good company to fly them out of Albany with their gear to Moosonee to take the train south.

    Netbooks

Hi it's Keith, this is my first post. Netbooks, i had a Lenovo Ideapad s10, nice little netbook much more solid then any EEEpc, or MSI. if you are looking for a netbook i strongly reccomend the ideapad s10,, i have used ACER, MSI, ASUS and the built quality is very poor. i had upgraded the memory to 2.5 gigs, and added a 320 gig hard drive. the GPS card " i added from my thinkpad x300" never worked right, windows drivers were always a problem. i founf the screen small it was a 10.2" and most apps would not fit well like mapsource. battery life was ok 3 hrs but far form the 8-10 that would be needed for a day of caching. i since sold the s10, and upgraded my iphone to an iphone 3g, "thanks murfster" and i now have geocaching 2.0 app running on it, and the motion X gps software, it is a great caching tool,, cant wait to test it out in cellular coverage. so in conclusion i just feel the netbooks have too small of a screen for any mapping, the keyboards are cramped, and just add another piece of equipment that cant do everything to the stuff you will carry.
  10. I have a pair of garmin emaps, with one cable and serial to USB adapter. $75 for the pair and cables, plus mailing costs.
  11. We won a fantastic Kevlar canoe, paddles, pfd's diamond ring, a great book and a few free stays at places (but we couldn't use those). So I can't complain about the big buckets..... However, I will try to help clean them up when I get south again.
  12. We are working away at the finer details now with local agencies to be involved. The Niska Inn is reported to be closing, so if you want to book accommodations in Moosonee, you should do it sooner then later, since there aren't many places to stay as it is. The event page will be up and running soon on the geocaching site. I promise!
  13. this pair is still available to purchase. make us an offer.
  14. Hi, the train will be running up and down (Cochrane to Moosonee, RETURN,) every day except Saturdays. I have called to confirm that. The Polar Bear Express is the SAME train as the Little Bear for those reading old train schedules.
  15. There was a big reunion of the Abitibi community a couple of years ago. I have been there several times, even got a tour of the hydro dam. It is so massive! and very old! Most of the community buildings are now gone, and only a couple of homes remain. Computers have taken over. There is an amazing waterfalls beyond Abitibi Canyon called New Post Falls. It is kind of a secret little hidden treasure, very hard to find, but worth the trek in. It is on a waterway provincial park. (or believe me, I would have a cache there). Hope to see you this summer!
  16. Paul, Here is the link to the website that explains and has pictures. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=107 Thanks!
  17. We have 2 Garmin eMap Gps units. One cable and a serial to USB adapter for it. $150 plus shipping. There are a few scratches, but work great. Selling because Santa brought me an Oregon 300 for Christmas! from the website: It's the size of a small, flat calculator, contains a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver, and weighs a mere six ounces. Even with its compact style, the eMap boasts an extra-large display for showing even more map data and the same power you've come to expect from Garmin handhelds — even while operating for up to 12 hours on just two AA batteries. The eMap features an internal basemap containing information on North and South America including state and country boundaries, lakes, rivers, streams, airports, cities, towns, coastlines and U.S., state and interstate highways. In addition, the eMap provides exit information for the federal interstate highway system. With the eMap, you will know when you are near services such as food, lodging and service stations. The eMap is compatible with Garmin's complete line of downloadable MapSource® CD-ROMs including U.S. Roads and Recreation, WorldMap, U.S. Topo and MetroGuide® U.S.A. When paired with the MetroGuide U.S.A. CD-ROM, the eMap has the ability to look up address and telephone number information for nearby services and points of interest. The eMAP will store eight or 16 megabytes of downloaded CD-ROM information at a time depending on the size of the cartridge you use in the unit.
  18. Here is some information on a double event we are hosting in Cochrane and Moosonee during the August long weekend. Still working on some of the finer details, but in the mean time, please ask questions and book your vacations! Bear it all in Cochrane & Wachay @ the Bay! WHEN: Long weekend August 1-3rd 2009 WHAT: This is a unique one time event for adventurous geocachers ( 2 events actually) Wachay is a Cree greeting and the Bay refers to James Bay Get yourself to Cochrane Ontario ( www.town.cochrane.on.ca ) for Saturday August 1,2009 for a special geocache event . Bear it all in Cochrane. Lots of new local caches will be available in the Cochrane area in time for the event. While there, visit the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat and Heritage Village. www.polarbearhabit.ca Take a short drive to see the Gardiner Ferry, one of the last cable ferries in Ontario. Have a Timmies in the town that was home to Tim Horton, take a swim in Lake Commando in the centre of town, or in the new pool at the Tim Horton Events Centre. Spend the night in Cochrane, several local hotels and B&B’s to choose from. ( Camping is available at Green Water Provincial Park ½ hour out of town) and board the Polar Bear Express train www.northlander.ca on Sunday August 2nd for a historic ride on the rails to Moosonee ON. Ontario Northland's Polar Bear Express connects residents of the coastal communities of Moosonee and Moose Factory to Cochrane and is one of North America's last remaining "flag stop" train services. As well, the Polar Bear Express offers visitors from around the world an opportunity to connect with Canadian history, Aboriginal culture and the landscape of the North. This old-fashioned rail excursion travels 186 miles between Cochrane and Moosonee, including over the Moose River - through Ontario's most pristine and spectacular scenery. During the summer, the Polar Bear Express features a full dining car in in addition to a snack car. Take in the scenic view from the popular dome car, which features windows that round up towards the ceiling and allow you to take in the most of the majestic environment; and, your ride aboard the Polar Bear Express would not be complete without a stop in the entertainment car to enjoy live music! (licensed car). The summer train also has a family car, with family-friendly movies, children’s games and crafts - all coordinated and supervised by Polar Bear Express travel counsellors. Once arriving in Moosonee join us for the event “Wachay @ the Bay”, on the shores of Canada’s only inland sea. We will travel by boat to the shores of James Bay for a traditional picnic. . (Note: There will be a Water Taxi fee to get to the event site, but we are currently looking into funding to make this free for cachers). This adventure is family friendly and there will be kids’ activities available as well. There will be lots of local caches available in Moosonee and on Moose Factory Island to help pass the time while waiting for your train home on Monday. Smoked geese, bannock, fossil hunting, fur trade history, a chance to see belugas, seals osprey, and bald eagles-- just a few of the great things offered by the James Bay Lowlands! The long weekend is usually the final weekend of GOOP (Gathering of Our People) on Moose Factory Island, a Cree Cultural Festival full of rich traditions. You can budget for this event by checking out these websites for travel and accommodation costs www.polarbearhabit.ca http://www.cochrane-on.worldweb.com/ www.northlander.ca www.moosonee.ca http://www.jamesbayfrontier.worldweb.com/M...ee/WheretoStay/ www.town.cochrane.on.ca We will update the forums as events continue to unfold. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions or make suggestions. Pencil this on your calendar today. As weather changes quickly on the James Bay coast remember to pack accordingly. Rain gear and warm sweaters are a must!
  19. Well I love all the mention of Moosonee! Bring all these bands back! Why did they stop coming? I will spend my winter making caches to hide this spring before the bugs come out of hibernation. Hope someone comes up!
  20. Well we certainly "cashed in" with this intiative from the CEC. We won a $3000 kevlar canoe, books, a diamond ring, and lots of one night stays at hotels, inns, bed and breakfasts etc. in the first year. I travelled for work a great deal that year and was lucky enough to find lots of them to enter the contest and increase my chances for the year end draw. We have seen this project improve by leaps and bounds from the original big white buckets, to more discreet/traditional containers. The CEC is OPEN to feedback and suggestions to improve this hobby/game/tourism project, what ever you/they choose to call it. I hope rather then complain, geocachers who are unhappy with this project will let the right people know so they can continue to improve and make changes to make the geocaching community happy. They have a tough job to satisfy each cacher's needs for challenges, or ease of finds depending on mobility/ability, time, money, ethics, etc. If rules are being broken, I trust the reviewers will address them accordingly. Living in an area with very few cachers and caches, it was nice to see the availability of caches increase. Sure they are easy to spot, and quite predictable, but I believe they want consistency for audience they are trying to draw, but I could be wrong. Again providing the feedback directly to the CEC would be a good step to making improvements. That is my 2 cents. C&K
  21. Our favourite cache was one that Ridgerunner's hid near Magnetawan. Congrats fellas! C&K
  22. Hey Murfster will our new canoe fit on your van, we need to get to Mattawa to pick it up anyway! We hope to make it down to this event, as the last one was great. Affordable and fun and there won't be any bugs yet. I will let you know soon if we can swing the weekend away. It would be great to see the crowd that was there last time. C&K
  23. Well well well! I recently discovered we were the lucky winners of the canoe! Thanks Amanda and Bill and the CEC for organizing such an amazing treasure hunt! It was a great adventure to be involved in. I can't wait for the next round of caches! Thanks again! Hey Pockets...we would love to take you for a paddle...just as long as you stay INSIDE the boat Connie&Keith
