  1. No they are not, its just a side effect.
  2. There was a bug with the paid iPhone app. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=322193 that they fixed within the last week. But really we can't help you until we find out what platform and app you are using. Actually when we do this thread will probably be moved to where it should be anyway.
  3. I guess it could have popped off when they bent over to pickup the cache.
  4. The smartphone apps also don't trip the audit logs. Quite true. This happened tonight when my latest cache was published. The FTF got the notification on his phone and logged his find, all without showing up on the audit log. The 2TF did not show up on the audit log either when he logged his find from his phone. I sure hope nobody else in town audits their audit logs cause the number of times I've viewed some caches, they're sure to find out what a nutjob I am. If the smartphone doesn't trip the alarms by going through the API. I would imagine that GSAK wouldn't trip the alarm either. Can someone verify that?
  5. Ahhhhh! Helvetica is invading. Was the nav always helvetica?
  6. You may have misread the request from the CO. It reads "Also, please leave at least one TB or geocoin in the cache for others to trade." It sounds like the CO just doesn't want it completely empty. Doesn't really demand a trade.
  7. There is a way to do it on the paid app. In the Navigate to Cache screen you hit the three dots in the top right corner and then click Add Waypoint and enter the coords. Then you have to find your waypoint on the screen then touch it and touch Set As Target. Not really as user friendly as my eTrex 10's Next Stage button, but the cell has a real map which is helpful since I can't fly. I agree it is not really advertised in any way and is definitely a barrier.
  8. I hear ya. In my area we have COs with an endless supply of challenge cache ideas. We have 100s and 100s of them. There are challenge power trails. Here are 2 screenshots - miles and miles of trailways saturated with them: Wow
  9. By you? Probably not. By the person who posted the spoiler photo? Yes, and the CO does have the right to delete the spoiler photo(s) or other spoiler information posted in a log. The offending finder would be allowed to repost their find without the spoiler information. Spoiler photo placed by the CO!!!!!! Using the word "Spoiler" is telling. What is it spoiling? Wouldn't all actions that give you extra information be spoilers? Maybe you aren't cheating; you are just spoiling your experience.
  10. By you? Probably not. By the person who posted the spoiler photo? Yes, and the CO does have the right to delete the spoiler photo(s) or other spoiler information posted in a log. The offending finder would be allowed to repost their find without the spoiler information. Yes, the picture can/should be deleted if the owner thinks it's a spoiler but if it was posted out of cluelessness, it seems harsh to call that person a "cheater" when it was really just a mistake. That really gets back to the essential thing that I find problematic about this "cheating" business - it's a pretty strong accusation to launch at someone who likely doesn't have any ill intent and isn't gaining any actual advantage. I take the same stance on cheating as fraud there has to be intent in it. There is by definition no way to accidentally commit fraud as there is no way to accidentally cheat.
  11. As long as Hide n' Seek is a game I would call Geocaching a game, but not in the scope that other people think of it. It's basically a game between two people. The hider and the cacher. Hey I hid this box can you find it? All other games that are played (numbers, FTF, etc.) are metagames.
  12. When I first got a trackable I got nervous. So I was logging the visits to show the owner that I did indeed have the trackable and was trying to find an appropriate spot for it. Also I thought that it got miles for it. I wasn't aware, at the time, that I was spamming someones inbox. Unfortunately all of the trackables that I have moved seem to disappear after I place them in a cache. Doesn't look very good for me.
  13. They don't have to. They just wait until someone complains, because we all know someone will complain.
  14. Its a good thing we don't have to work on that assumption here. In geocaching there are ways for us to see or at least peak at the CO's cards before we initiate an interaction. We get to read the cache description, take a look at the CO's reactions to other players in the logs, see if a hint is provided, check the difficulty (or how hard the CO thinks the cache should be). If we want to research we can look at the CO's finds. If that fails we can go to the forum were fellow cachers are incessantly hashing out what is acceptable. There are plenty of tools available if a cacher really wants to show respect.
  15. There you go. In pink. But to be honest I don't think it would help me. They are bright orange on my iPhone app but that doesn't help me find the first stage. So far I have only been able to complete a single Multi and this was just because both stages were more traditional. I will attempt some in the future but I won't go out of my way to hunt one down.
  16. I have seen similar debates on gaming forums. They would call techniques that don't break the rules but give you an advantage that may violate the spirit of the game, exploits. Its all academic anyway as the only rule enforcement is initiated by the CO's. If the CO doesn't mind it, or the CO is absent its not much of a rule, guideline, or policy anyway. To me I would say it is against the spirit of a cache if you were to get the coordinates for the a puzzle from anywhere but solving it. I would also say the same if you had someone else climb for you to get a climbing cache. (I am going to say right here that I do cache with my family if one of them gets brave/smart I will count it since we are a team under one login.) As far as phoning a friend I wouldn't do it, unless it was part of the cache (there is one in Nashville like this). The only person I might contact for a hint is the CO and I am usually too shy for that. Am I going to call someone out for using alternative methods? No. I can only decide how I am going to cache.
  17. I really think everyone is off topic on this one. I really wouldn't mind to see them in pink or maybe a fuchsia. If you don't know what color that is; look up "The 80's".
  18. On the website premium caches are shown by a circle instead of a square background. As far as the paid app goes the icons are not different. The only way to tell is to go to the cache page and the Premium indicator under the coords will be orange. (On the iPhone)
  19. Here is a more printer friendly version... http://www.geocaching.com/articles/Brochures/EN/EN_Geocaching_BROCHURE_online_bw.pdf
  20. The previous post was a guy going out with his family. If my family found a cache as he said they did, assuming he or they signed the log, it is a find period.
  21. Ha ha. I saw that. Why are you checking my finds?
  22. Still a find to me. He could have just entered a TFTC, but then there would be no entertainment value.
  23. You could exclude Airports, train stations, and schools. As well as any other guideline violating area.
  24. I wonder how they thought those find logs would be received? In their minds were they blessing the caches with their finds as a kind of send off? Kind of like an "Atta Boy." Then the hider would be appeased because the cache was found by giants among men. Unfortunately, this is how I read it. "I really like your hide here. I'm going to have to steal it. Go ahead and archive, but before you do let me make sure I get my smiley." It seems that the persons in charge have decided to promote geocaching in spite of geocachers.
