  1. While my post certainly doesn't answer the original question..... is is just me - or has anyone else enjoyed saying the word "Cupola" (and for those who enjoy benchmarking near railroads - "capstone") Ok... I have officially lost it!
  2. Bill93 - I guess that confuses me - I mean - its part of the structure - its clear it at least ONCE was there - and - while the fine is nothing by today's standards - it is STILL punishable by a fine to destroy it - so - the ? is - are contractors really that oblivious to the presence of "benchmark" discs????????????? Anyone have any insight on this? (just as an aside - I know of a railroad line in my area that is getting ready to be used again after about a 20/30 year lull - so I thought I might let the folks re-doing it know of the discs along the line so they can preserve them - that IS a good idea right?)
  3. Well it looks like there was a dnf on PG1604 in 1995 - however as we all know - that doesn't mean much. I presume the demolition company knew that it was supposed to be there and would have been legally responsible for verifying it was there (or not there) and then destroyed (if it was destroyed) - and reporting that to the government. correct? *edited for spelling
  4. I may be wrong - but if the mark you found is on a topo map - and not found online via a search - it may simply be a USGS disc that was never "monumented" by NGS. If that is the case - then there is no where online to "log" it, BUT - its a find nonetheless. And for the record - the date jives with my belief that it is a USGS mark - as those were actively placed in the 1950's. Welcome to the world of benchmarking!
  5. Thanks PFF for such an interesting post! And Rogbarn - let us know what you find out if you investigate! As for the original mystery - well here is the update: The WV Blue Book lists the park from 1950 - 1957. With this info - I called the state back and finally got to the Parks Historian who - by chance had also heard of this "park" just recently and was alos curious, He found a document from the early 1950's that mentioned establishing a park there with an unimproved road to the site, picnic areas, fire pits, hiking trails etc. The fellow I am dealing with has been out of town - but we will be looking into it further upon his return next week. One more thing to add to the mystery - the land division shows NO RECORD of owning this property or a park being there. Will keep everyone posted as details continue to emerge. (Did I mention I love looking at Topo maps! and all thanks to benchmarking)
  6. Tosborn - Your links convince me further that there IS something to the topo map reference. Maybe I actually need to head to the library and actually look at - and make a photocopy of the entry - then head to the WV State Parks office. Something tells me though that the woman I spoke to on the phone who was SO sure there was no such park would be thrilled with my visit. Is anyone familiar with how topo map info was gathered/verified etc back in the day? Thanks for all the posts so far - keep em coming!
  7. Tosborn: You are correct - Institute is most certainly a place! All I meant was that the dedication ceremony mentioned in the article will actually be in Malden, WV (where there is a geocache btw). I know what you mean about the area not really being big enough to be a park - but it is SO clearly referenced on the topo - with a very specific name and area.......................... add to this the "fencing" I found - and it leads me to believe it was something.............
  8. The info you both list regarding Tenn. does make it even more strange. My sense still is that there was a state park by that name in the location I found on the topo map. So an additional question might be - could the topo map be THAT wrong? (as an FYI - the monument dedication is actually taking place in Malden WV - Booker T's home town. The institute part is a part of the school's name)
  9. Like many benchmark hunters do, I was looking around at online topo maps recently and discovered a state park listed (with what looks like a property outline) that I had never heard of. Its called Booler T. Washington State Park. It shows as located in Dunbar, WV. Any info I can find - which is almost none - has the word (historical) after the park name. I did call the state parks people and can't get past the first person I speak with - who insists its never been there! I did go to the area where it would have made logical sense to enter this "park" and there was a "fence" (if you wanna call it that) that consisted of very weathered wood beams - low to to the ground - wire strung between them. It certainly looks like a state park kind of thing. My question is - have any of you come across something like this before? I Would love any and all thoughts on this mysterious park or any stories you all may have of a similar nature. Thanks in advance and I hope everyone is well!
  10. Hi everyone: My brother is going out of town on business and will be within about 1000 ft of the following mark: DH2431 As you can see - the info is awfully vague - though the location IS adjusted. Any insight on what he might be looking for would be greatly appreciated! (I am asking as he is busy getting ready to leave - he will hop on and join in if warranted). Thanks in advance.
  11. Well have been reading over the newest forms I had and I noticed 2 things that were strange....... Any comments on them would be appreciated. Below is the first, and it is seen in varying forms and combinations throughout the ducument. Also, to the left of the T.P some of the entries do not have mileage info associated with them. "T.P (rd. and trail SW) = P.P. "0" photo1-59" The nest question is: What do they mean when they write "painted" "standard tablet stamped JJS 1956 815, painted "BM 815.1" Look forward to your interpretations..........
  12. Rockin Roddy: I think they mean a compass feature that is in addition to the directional compass on one of the main screens we toggle between. But of course - I could very well have misunderstood! (and for the record - I am with you - I have the same results with my Mag. 210 - love it!)
  13. Plain and Simple - for geocaching - NOT necessary at all! So long as your GPS gets you to within 30 feet of the cache as a general rule - that is all you will need. Mark your car before hiking and its even less needed. Now - if you are going to use it for another application - that is a whole other question (and another thread in another part of the forums!) PS: and remember - if you want the GPS to perform like it should - you have to be moving - left /right whatever - but keep moving and you will get to the cache - well within 30 feet at the very least under good conditions - maybe closer! (IF you can find it that is)
  14. Thanks for the replies - keep the info coming - the more the better!
  15. Am trying to help my brother get a good Magellan unit and he is looking at the 300, 400, 500 series. (I have a 210). If you have one - please give us info on how you like it - features etc. Note: we want to make sure any unit he gets has WAAS! Thanks in advance for any info and advice you can provide!
  16. LSUF: Sweet find! Congrats Congrats on a unique one! As for the rounding up - my input is - yup! I have seen this many a time on USGS sheets I have. Thanks for sharing this with us.
  17. Thanks all - I have posted a "note" on the page. Papa - I agree that diagram would be great to put up there as well - just not sure how to though - so if you could do that step for me that would be awesome! Now I just need to figure out a real good reason to get to Colorado to look for it myself - a Denver Bronco home game maybe! (Go Broncos!)
  18. BDT: Since I don't often use the Data sheet - would this be right? RM 1 is 21.5 Meters North of Station (bolt) RM 2 is 10.2 Meters away from Station (bolt) Because the location is adjusted - on a good day a gps should get to within a few feet of the bolt. Is that enough to say - outside of a more descriptive post which i would do?!
  19. I was looking at this mark tonight and it dawned on me that out of 27 logs on GC.com - there is not ONE actual find of THE mark. What do you guys think? Go here: http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=KL0637
  20. Its back..... the hunt for these crazy marks! I recently started going after a few from the list I received around the time this thread began. And again - I found myself with more questions then finds. Here they are: 1) I was in a really remote area looking for a disc (which I didn't find yet) and was at a disadvantage because I didn't have anyone with me who could help pull a tape - but.... I did find orange and blue ribbon - tied together - and tied to a tree branch. Question: What am I to make of that? What do the different colors (or combos) signify? 2) How do we tell how old a power poll is? So often they are referenced in the descriptions (3 feet S of power poll. etc) and are pretty key to find the mark. 3) I have searched and searched... has anyone gotten a list of old - and in many cases gone - schools and railroad stations? I am open to any suggestions (minus google - I have tried!) As an aside - I just got the next closests quad to my first.... Thanks to Larry in the Rolla Office - I have a feeling more questions and different questions will arise from those sheets! Hope all my fellow benchmark hunters are well - and I look forward to responses.
