  1. yo, thanks everyone for your responses, think i'm getting more of an idea about all this we do lot of walking and use the os map for plotting routes etc.. i brought in the caching aspect to entertain the kids, so i,m plotting routes in os format and attempting to itegrate caches into the walks to stop the kids doing kevin and perry impressions after a few miles!! i'm thinking i'll use the gps in os format so i can relate it to the map, get as close as i can then enter the dgm format and home in from there once again - cheers all your comments are appreciated
  2. anyone got any thoughts, comments on using the gps on the os grid as against the decimal degrees method, is their any significant difference in the caches location i thank you
  3. anyone got any ideas as to what is going on with my e-trex vista everything works ok except when trying to access the nav page, at this point the screen either locks up or goes blank
  4. just a thank you to everyone who gave advice to us in getting started and setting up my etrex vista found two caches out of two attempts so my daughter i well pleased! i'm pleased too it kept her occupied for a couple of hours!!! just one thing, can anybody tell me why when i enter the cache location from the site n 53deg 41.127 w 1deg 43.895 on the nav screen location lat/lon it reads n 53deg 42.132 w 1deg 39.541, as i say we found the caches but couldn't understand why the reading was different, datum is set to wgs84 compass set to magnetic any thoughts from you experts cheers - richard
  5. do you know, i'm glad i started this discussion, learning so much and getting to speak to so many people, it's been quite an eye opener into the world of geocaching, tell me clearpath and others, how much do you typically pay for a mapsoursce cd on the other side of the pond, and an instructional video for only 10 bucks, sounds good to me bless ya all - richard
  6. thanks zingerhead, you have all been very helpful, learning all the time and your guys help it feels like i'm speeding up rge process, my software was set at 2.7 i've now upfraded it to the latest version and i now have the extra options that were lacking once again - cheers to all
  7. quote:Originally posted by Prime Suspect:The Navation (compass) screen has 2 settings - _Big Compass_ and _Big Numbers_. Each setting has it's own data displays. Set it to Big Numbers. Set the top data display to Current Distance, and the bottom to Location (Lat/Lon). Now switch to Big Compass. Set one of the data displays to GPS Accuracy. Set the other one to Current Distance. This will give you pretty much everything you need to hunt a cache. I'll mostly use the small compass display, but will switch over sometimes to check the GPS accuracy number. Once you start to close in on a cache, it's sometimes better to ignore the arrow and look at the actually lat/lon numbers instead. http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/3608_2800.gif _"Don't mess with a geocacher. We know all the best places to hide a body."_ thank you for taking the time to contact me, i don't appear to be able to do as you describe i don't appear to have the gps accuracy mode, or perhaps i'm just thick would you be good enough to explain again in minute detail cause i like what your saying just dying to get it together thank you again - richard
  8. quote:Originally posted by Alan2:It's probably already set that way but the Datum should be WGS 84 and the Position Format hddd mm.mmm so it will match the geocaching page information. If you set it differently and enter info from the web page, the actual locations will not match up to where it should be Play with the unit, take it outside and mark waypoints and walk around and track those and return"home". Practice. Practive. Practive. Try the diferent featuresso you se what's available thn pick and choose what you like. There are so many features you got to play with it a long while to get the feel of it and see what you can do with it. Did you buy maps yet? Good luck thanks alan2, no it wasn't set as you described it was set at ord survey gb altered it now tx to markwell stunrod etc.. sure i'll get this eventually, tx 4 your reply
  9. thanks to markwell and stunod i think i'm getting somewhere anyone out there got an etrex vista who could give me some tips on setting it up to make it "user friendly" for geochaching or any tips would be welcomed cheers all
  10. quote:Originally posted by Markwell:Take a read at the FAQ found on my page http://www.markwell.us - that should answer a bunch of your questions. The _N 54° 32.671 W 003° 03.610_ are the coordinates to enter into your GPS. The British Grid coords are using another reference. We here across the pond get UTM. They are just different ways of referencing the same point. The _gc45ba_ question is answered on my FAQ, but basically it's a unique reference for each cache - nothing more. You don't have to do anything with it if you aren't downloading the caches directly from Geocaching.com. http://www.markwell.us http://www.chicagogeocaching.com thanks for your help marwell & sunod it's beginning to make sense and greetings from lil old england
