  2. Does anyone know where do get the Geocaching.com windows stickers. These are the type like you see from universities, car models (Across the topp of the windshield), etc. I found a site in Australia that has them, however after returning a message on my initial inquiry that he thought the shipping would be too expensive, he hasn't returned any of my emails. He said they were available at geocaching.com (Makes sense since it is their name on it) but they're not here.
  3. Just a heads up, if you keep an eye on old WalMart, they drop to $50 now and then. I saw it at one near my house, by the time I decided it was gone. I kept my eyes open and founf two of them at another WalMart a few weeks later. I need 3 (siblings, don't ya know), so I took the receipt to Galyan's and they price matched it for the third. The tags were red, which normally mean a closeout, but I have seen them since at the same store. A friend picked up oneof them.
  4. If this is a RTFM, please tell me where, cause I am overlooking it somehow. I would like to know how to use the averaging feature in the Garmin V. Every once and a while, I have hit the menu key (I think) while looking for a waypoint and the Average option comes up. I let it sit for w while and then I have the option to save it as a waypoint. How do I get to it? (My experiences have been hit or miss) How do I use it to help the unit increase it's accuracy? Is it worth bothering about? Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together? I checked out the Garmin site with no luck and the manual put out by DePriest, while excellent, does not cover this in too much depth. My search here just brought up some manual ways and the pro's and cons. Help!!!
  5. The pocket queries are more than worth it, however as stated above, most of us have joined because we want a site to keep coming too. As someone who owns servers that a "not for profit" organization is using, I can tell you without the help of a few significant "donors" I would have shut them down months into the project.
  6. quote:Originally posted by Team Shibby:Yes this can be done with the V as well. Using the program that Prime Suspect referred to you, you need to replace the text in the 'WARNING' screen. I have done this with my V so I'll let you know that it must be entered in the exact format that you see it listed as otherwise it will not fit. I was able to add my name, two telephone numers with area code and the term $$$REWARD IF FOUND If you need further assistance, let me know. Kar How? When I treid it on my V, it only gives me 7 Characters to work with, exactly what it would take to replace "WARNING".
  7. I think the answer is Yes to the eTrex, no to the V. I have both and can not remeber the name of the program but I found it by doing a search of Google for etrex mods. You might try this site to start. If I find the direct URL for the program, I will post it. You might also try this page.
  8. Or, look at the suggested products, all fine in their own way and MobiPocket and decide for yourself. I have tried most of them and each has their strong points. Warm and Fuzzy will now inform you about DMCA [This message was edited by Baloo&bd on August 05, 2003 at 02:38 PM.]
  9. Voted no. I ten to lean to as few rules as possible to make things work. GCer's seem to police this pretty well themselves. A recent cache we found in our area added another leg to it because the owner found that another cache was placed very close to it. I haven't heard of too many terretorial issues, however I haven't been at this as long as most.
  10. Gues I got to say thanks too for your question. We always bring trash bags with us however it just occured to me that leaving empty/new ones at caches I find is a way to introduce Cache in/Trash out to new GCer's.
  11. In our geocaching "kit" we bring along a couple different sizes of Ziplock bags. Cache owners always appreciate knowing if there is a problem such as moisture with their cache and tehy REALlY appreciate when a problem like moisture is found and fixed.
  12. As said before, if you are using it for strictly Geocaching (with maybe a schedule and some addresses), by all means, find a low end Palm or Visor running Palm OS. Make sure the OS is 4.0 or later to save any compatibility woes. If you think there is any possibility you might start using it seriously at home or escpecially work, buy the most you can afford, again with Palm OS. I have had a Palm III, IIIxe and IIIc and now use a Sony CLie NX70V, which when it come sto GC means I have a camera right there for a quick picture. It carries a price of about $499 but check EBAY. If you want to run something like SPreadsheets, you probably want to get something with at least * megs ofmemory (recomend this anyway) The downside with the Palms I mentioned is they do not use a memory card. I think all the Sony models do and at least some or all of the Visors. Visor is almost like buying a Palm since it is the same guy who created it, just added some missing bells and whistles and found a way to produce it somewhat less expensive. Warning: A lot of people go the low end route and find themselves upgrading 8 months to a year later. Shouldn't be a problem if you only dropped $50 to $100 to get started.
  13. Seeing some of the numbers I have seen posted, I am pretty sure mine is not in the "unusually high" category. (Although BD would differ with that opinion). 2 GPS III+ 1 GPS V 3 eTrex Yellows Understand however, 5 people in the house Geocache to some degree. Also, I got the eTrexs when Walmart had them for $50 a couple of months ago.
  14. quote:Originally posted by Woodsters Outdoors:Kind of on the subject as this pocket query thing is intriguing me a little, but does anyone know of the best and cheapest place to get a PDA suitable for the downloaded pages? Brian Ahh..Woodsters slowly coming over. Brian, let the force guide you...wait..wrong hobby. Anyway, most any PDA that will interface with a computer shoudl work. I would recommend staying with a Palm OS device (i.e. Handspring, Palm, Sony, etc.) and RuffRidr has the right idea, eBay. There are many deals to be had at CompUsa and Best Buy as well. And Brian, remember this.
  15. UPS delivers? Your gonna love the GPS V!
  16. I have two queries set up, both using my home Lat/Lon. weekly. 1. 300 caches within 50 miles that I have not found. 2. Members only and Web cams within 50 miles (set to 300 as well) I also set up for when I am going to a given area, for instance I have one set up now for my tripp this weekend to the WI State Fair within 50 miles of the fair based on it's Lat/Lon. I would use 500 as my default, however I wanted room for other waypoints (GPS V) and I also DL the benchmarks and load them in.
  17. quote:Originally posted by weswada:Baloo, Like how you managed to slip in that the way to get things done, is to cheat and steal, to get the 'job done.' Thanks. I'll keep that dishonesty in mind the next time i submit a cache... I have no idea where you pulled this out of my post. At no time did it say anything about "get the job done". Where did I say cheat or steal? Did you confuse my post with another? There were no trespassing signs up, both should be disallowed.
  18. quote:Originally posted by RJFerret:- I don't believe the 2nd placer should be rewarded for going against the rules. - I do believe the initial placer should be rewarded for following the guidelines. I agree with point one, the 2nd placer should not be rewarded for not following the guidelines. I disagree with point two for the very same reason. THis was not placed per the guidelines, for that matter, not even per the law. There were NO TRESPASSING signs in place per the original post. I wait and read the response and saw the logic that since others were disobeying the no tresspass signs, it was OK for his placement of the cache. I voted no because no other option was left, however both caches should be disallowed at this point even after the trail opens officialy. In reality, your upset because the second cache found a better way around the rules then you did.
  19. I would first do what Harrald suggested then I would double check your coordinates to make sure that: 1. They are correct (simple things can sometimes be overlooked. Decimal point?) 2. They are WGS-84 Datum The only other thing I see you have set different from me other then the Number of and Radius (I have mine set to 300 and 50 miles) is you check "I don't own". It is worth a shot, uncheck it.
  20. There is a problem that appears to be somewhat common with the cable connection. See this thread. [This message was edited by Baloo&bd on July 27, 2003 at 08:14 AM.]
  21. quote:Originally posted by CYBret:I had almost given up ever being able to use the program when I gave it that final shove and it started working. The thumb press worked for me two. If you are brave of heart, you can reach under the pins of the cable and bend them out a little. That worked for me also, however not on all my eTrex's. Seems the connector is a "weak link" in the design of either the cable or the unit (My money is on the cable.).
  22. quote:Originally posted by bigcall:I have to agree with _E_nfanta here. - Booker T. Washington First, OK Guys, I mis-spelled the name. Sorry. I looked at it, read it correctly and STILL typed it wrong. Got to stop writing these while on conference calls. I guess I need to clarify here, I just used Enfanta's post as a springboard to ask a question. If you look at my post, I never mentioned anything about the TNLN, THanks type post. Whil I would much prefer to see something more descriptive...well...that's my problem, not the poster/logger. My point was I see post about caches "sucking" a lot lately and wanted to know how it could. I can see where it is frustrating to spend a bunch of time to find a unkept cache, however I am more in it for the hunt. To me the quality of the actual cache is just gravy. I know I plan soon on planting some and have taken the negative and positive I have seen here into account. Please, I did not intend to offend, even with my mussbellt wurds.
  23. quote:Originally posted by enfanta: If my log on your cache says "Found It, Thanks" that's code for Your Cache Sucked. No way am I giving up THAT. I got a question here, sorry if it takes this off topic, how does a cache suck? Either it was real easy (which brought up YOUR stats), it was real hard (which helped hone YOUR skills) or it didn't have 'cool' items (which means your doing this for the wrong reasons). I'm not taking infanta to task, I have just seen other posts or logs that say "this sucks!" that I wished they had only used infanta's method to relay the information. No caches, no geocaching. It's not like we pay people to put these things out there.
