  1. I've just done a ROM upgrade on my HTC Touch phone and now the internal GPSr is active. I'm going to try and compare how it works against my X500 this weekend. From what I can see it's fairly accurate but eats the battery pretty quickly (less than 2 hours constant use). Thank god for car chargers lol!!

I look forward to seeing how it goes for you. I'm looking to get a Touch Pro in a month or two if it doesn't look like Sprint has an Android based phone in the immediate future.

  2. Yah you ran into the same issues I did and I was waiting for my cash flow to pick up a little bit to buy my own copy of Mapsource. If these can be out put as different GPX files so that the symbology maps correctly for each segment, I don't have a problem with hosting the layers on my website.... and I don't mind doing the legwork for conversion. You've done quite a bit already with the project.

Thanks! I've actually got it all scripted out now so that it automatically breaks out the layers by type and generates the DeLorme .an1 files. If people want to take a look, I've posted the results at http://cid-46fe9a111e6619cb.skydrive.live....%7C_DeLorme.zip. Take a look and let me know your feedback; if all seems okay, I'll make this a regular part of Northwest Trails releases.

You just made my day (again!)

While I'll have to wait to try this out, I really can't wait. Thanks so much!

  3. Awesome coin!

It's to bad Geo Sasquatch didn't make it up to http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...5e-94bb5660d108]Sky River Sasquatch[/url] when he/she visited Tunnel of Light. It was a filming location for a kiddie Bigfoot movie and there's a big old Sasquatch wood carving there. But what a great place to start, as not too far from Tunnel of Light there have been numerous Bigfoot reports (or 'we don't know what it was so maybe it was Bigfoot reports')

My wife dreamed of making a coin almost exactly like the Bigfoot side. Now I get to tell her not to sit on her ideas forever :)

  4. Prompted by another recent thread, I just wanted to add another comment here - for me it never was about a free coin - an element of this challenge that I had completely forgotten about, it was the chance to participate, a desire to 'showcase' my part of the world and an incentive to get out and find some caches, I believe that is probably true for everyone that visits this thread.

Looking forward to seeing more pictures and stories of these travelling turtles. It's even better than receiving a retrieve, drop or discover on any of my travelling coins since it is rare for anyone to bother to take pictures and the logs are definitely a lot shorter !

I was pretty enthusiastic when this started and then sort of disappeared. It wasn't for lack of getting selected myself or lack of interest in the turtle's travels.

I actually brought one of my own turtles up to Mt St Helens with me for the above reason Tooey sort of cites (that is, wanting to take part, and ok, it was a nice ego boost that I had enough free time on my hands that I could be taking pics of geocoins while on top of Mt St Helens!) I didn't get selected for that month, but that sure didn't make me want to get SOME turtle up there!

I had planned to duct tape the turtle to one of the kites brought up and wanted to fly the turtle out over the crater, but the larger kite never really was very cooperative  Think my hiking partners though I was a bit more loopy than usual.

And then I lost my turtle pics to a satanic screensaver that killed my windows\system32 directory when I uninstalled it :)

Anyhow, please don't take my sob story of lost pictures as I wanna free coin  This is a great project that's hard not to appreciate, especially with those moving the coins going the distance with such great pics!

  5. I went to check out the demo in Redmond tonight. I have to say, I'm pretty darn jealous of TotemLake's pre-order. I was really impressed... below are some not very well thought out first impressions of it.

The unit I played with displayed different maps at different levels of zoom... aerial, topo, hybrid... It sounded like this was how it was set up and you could set it up differently if you wanted. Very cool, and even though you can see it on their website, so much cooler in person!

While I didn't think aerial images would be all that exciting in town, more a novelty, and wanted it for hiking, after looking up some local caches, it seems like this would be great for urban caching.

Being unfamiliar with the software, after just briefly checking that out, it seemed light years ahead of Mapsource. Maybe its not, but I really liked what I saw quite a bit. It was nice to find out it could also be used with other receivers (like Garmin).

Map subscription sounds like a steal. For some reason I assumed that if the subscription lapsed, you'd not have maps (DRM or something like that). Not the case. I'd likely spend the first week planted in front of the computer downloading all the available maps B)

The only thing that I wasn't over enthusiastic about was that if I had one tonight I wouldn't be running Northwest Trails. But after doing some reading and talking to Team DeLorme, I didn't feel to distressed about that

I asked a bunch of questions, all which Team DeLorme seemed more than happy to answer. My only regret is now I have to wait until probably after Christmas to buy one :D

Can't recommend enough popping over to Tacoma if your even remotely interested in this unit and checking it out for yourself. And if you do, maybe you can ask about maps for outside the US, as I forgot

  6. YAAAAAHHHH!

We were the recipients of some perfecting timing this morning. We were getting ready to head out to school. Checked my email and noticed that Team DeLorme had logged a find yesterday! Who was I to not grab the coords before leaving :D

mightyzinn had a change of heart and *really* wanted to come along (after previously telling me he had no interest in a coin hunt), but no such luck. He wished me luck as I dropped him off, but not without expressing great jealously that I was heading out to Cougar Mt (he loves this area).

After making my way through rush hour traffic on 405 (never pretty), got around to making it to where I wanted to be, parked and headed out for GZ. There was some level of amusement had over the fact that my Garmin sent me unnecessarily down a wet hill before I gave up with that, expanded my search and made the find.

I enjoyed that brief, tense and exciting moment before cracking the container open. Come on, coin junkies, you know what I'm talking about! Would I find the treasure I sought or would it have left earlier with someone just a little more determined than myself... I'm not the only one who gets that, right????

Open container, lift the log and there it was. Hot dadgum (what's a dadgum!?!), that is one *hefty* beauty! Really, a *very* impressive coin. I guess I just didn't image it being this hefty B) And... wow!

When I picked up the little guy his disappointment missing the hunt was in equal proportion to how impressed he was with the coin. It spins for goodness sakes!!!!! He was one happy camper :huh:

And so we had a little party with cookies and Halloween candy, the coin sitting between us, commenting how *AWESOME* this coin is while we munched away ;)

Thanks Team DeLorme for dropping one of these not *too* far away :D Can't wait to check out the PN-40 later this afternoon!

  7. Kewl, thanks for cross-posting, I never visit the DeLorme site. I think I'll try to hit his Issaquah one on Wednesday.

Oh well, couldn't make it today after all. :anibad: Hope someone attends and fills us in!

I had hoped to make the Issaquah demo myself, but mightyzinn was mighty-out-of-control

  8. No doubt :-) And no matter how much I stalk the TD profile, I've got my little one who has indicated he is not enthusiastic about coin chasing, so that might be my only hope of even seeing one of these.

You tell him..."YOUR GONNA CHASE COINS WITH ME AND YOUR GONNA LIKE IT!!! Ask him "You wanna be just a Zinn?...We can take the Mighty right off your name!"..."Now lets go get that coin!" If that doesnt work finish him off with "THIS IS YOUR FATHER SPEAKING!!!"

:D:D:D I can relate... but for me, its the Old lady! :D

Hehehehe... well, this kid has happily gone on some wild coin chases with me, so I can't push my luck too much or he'll *never* want to go :D But if I look at the picture for the coin anymore, it might end up beyond my control!

  9. I hope Brian keeps us updated as to his Oregon schedule :D

I really do want to see a demo as we are probably going to pick one up after seeing all of it's capabilities; and I'm not above begging to at least get to "discover" an Eartha geocoin :D

No doubt :-) And no matter how much I stalk the TD profile, I've got my little one who has indicated he is not enthusiastic about coin chasing, so that might be my only hope of even seeing one of these.

  10. The scheduled roadshow makes it so I have to miss it. However, I have the PN-40SE on pre-order and can't wait to see my new toy get delivered.

I'm pretty excited to check this out, but maybe you know the answer to my biggest question regarding this unit. Will it do custom maps and is it possible to convert Moun10Bike's Northwest Trails maps to a usable format? That's a must for me.

  11. Thanks for the info Chip! We're super excited to try and track down a coin, but not always the fastest in the bunch with a 5 year old leading the way (unless he makes me carry him on my shoulders, which I suppose he usually does!), so that info is useful :)

I am interested in finding out if Team DeLorme's stops at REIs and such are opportunities for one on one with a PN-40 and to ask some specific questions regarding the unit. After yet another hike in the dark with a mostly useless Garmin Vista HCx tracklog my wife and I are looking for something that doesn't seem so bent on sending me off into certain DOOOOM. The PN-40 looks so much prettier than a 60csx :)

  12. Thanks Everyone...We made the 100 mile round trip this morning. Found that Big ol Urban cache and unfortunatley for me, the coin was grabbed by Kusanagi last night. I KNEW I SHOULDA WENT!!!... Sweetpea will NEVER live this one down! :)

Havent been denied on a coin hunt yet and let me tell ya... for all who seek, I hope its there for ya!...Sweetpea kept asking "whats wrong?" on the way home. She just will never understand how we are so nuts over these things! WHY IS IT SO!!!

Just checked all my other options after getting back and well...There aint none- was already to beat feet and head to Sac, to find Rivercity swooped up Eartha at the Sacramento Bee!

So congrats to you two... I hope the hunt was great and treasure found will be admired by many, maybe ill have a chance to see it one day at an event.

    Till Next Time~

CACHE HARD and CACHE ON! Eagerly awaiting another Norcal drop with fingers crossed! Im watchin and ready!

Sorry to hear you missed it

  13. I wanted to share the coin find story to anyone who may want to read it.

I work for a retailer that's corporate offices are in the next town up form where DeLorme is located. I don't always work in that town but I was the day the coin came out. I got a couple of alerts that a coin had been placed so I left work and ran down to the cache site (don't tell my boss).

The cache the coin was in is on DeLorme property on the edge of a big field. When I got there I saw a few people playing Frisbee right next to the caceh. I went around through the woods to get to the cache and when I got there I looked up and everyone was leaving. I figured there break was over and they were headed back to work, but when I signed the log there was a note asking that whoever picked up the coin come into the store so they DeLorme team could meet them.

In the store I got to meet a few of the team and had a nice chat. they took my picture next to Eartha. They told me they would be placing the coins as they traveled around the country.

I was very fortunate to get one of the coins, they are very cool.

Congrats and thanks for sharing the story :yikes: That was great that you got to meet some of the team after!

  14. There are a number of threads concerning issues on the Vista HCx on this board. Before buying that, I would seriously suggest reading up on those threads. I loved my Vista HCx until a certain firmware (or was it software) update and it's been nothing but disappointment after disappointment ever since that point.

That said, others seem to have no issues, so reading up and deciding yourself seems important.

  15. ya gotta know... :o 1 was picked up by some1 with only their 1st & only find....

How exciting to find something that special on your first find. ;)

No doubt, that would be cool to find on one's first find!

I think that it would be a shame if they kept caching but dropped the coin only to have the next finder keep and later regretted moving the coin if they got into geocoins.

  16. Wow, this is really cool! I just linked it up with my phone, and have already posted a find using SMS to GC.com, Twitter, Facebook, and Fire Eagle!!!

And no... you don't need any sort of expensive phone to do this. Any phone with SMS (text messages) will work. I'm using a cheap throw-away VirginMobile phone ($9.95) with no fancy features at all.

Jon, thanks for pointing me in this direction.

Point Twitter in the direction of socialthing! and/or ping.fm and you can add an obscene amount of other social networks :-)

  17. I'm really really looking for a Dark Side of the Cache coin!!!

I have a very limited trader list but a couple of wonderful coins that you might want!!!

    Help me find one.. :)

    YHM

What would you be offering  ? IF it is the "Pink Floyd" one , I have a glittery silver one. Now, maybe that is all it came in. Frankly, it's been Too long ago to remember the different flavors it came in :D :D

fairyhoney, could you send over your home coords and the hours you are working this week? you simply have too many coins that i want
