  1. Another thing they (Groundspeak) could do is make an RSS feed for our http://www.geocaching.com/my/logs.aspx?s=1 (Caches logged page) pages. If there was a feed for this page, one could simply set up Facebook to import that feed.

RSS is designed for one-to-many distribution. Not the right tool for this job, since what you're asking for is basically one-to-one distribution.

I see what you're saying, although you could use that same RSS feed to distribute that information to countless other places (blogs, social networks, follow friends, screensavers and other mashups, etc). Could be interesting.

  2. Something with coord.info and Brightkite would be excellent, especially if coord.info could hand off the proper coordinates to Brightkite. That would be way cooler than sending coord.info info to Twitter.

    Yes, that would be great.

Maybe GEOC @GC1234, which would then mark the cache found in the field notes and then forward the info to BK, which would get back to FB. Ideally, if the FB app could show a map of the caches you found that day, kind of with little pins like the cities you've visited app does. Users could set how long it keeps the history, something like that.

I'm not a programmer and don't know if this could be done since it would be sending info to and from 3 or 4 different services.

I think that for it to work with Brightkite, Groundspeak would have to set it up, like they have for Twitter and fire eagle.

  3. I'd like to see some kind of an implementation that's a cross between coord.info and Brightkite where you mark a cache found and then it shows it somehow on Brightkite/Facebook with the map & all.

  4. Really looking forward to seeing these Christmas turtles!! I hope that they wait until the weekend to decide who their new owners will be as I don't think internet will be available where I am going before that......

No worries and I'll trade ya problems :) Not sure when the sale will be, I had a bathroom line freeze and burst, I've been without water and I have to get up every hour and turn the pumps on to run the water thru the pipes so the other lines don't freeze while it creates a nice puddle underneath the house. Not to mention shoveling myself out of snowdrifts up to my chest. To put it mildly I'm tired and cranky right now and the turtles may have to wait until further down the road even if they do get here by tomorrow. I'm having so much fun right now :) Did I mention I love Montana? <_<

;) That's a crappy thing to have to deal with. I really hope Santa fixes that up for you mighty quick.

  5. What it is, is about interface differences. So yes, after using Garmin for several years, the review has a Garmin slant. That's not being unfair to M10B, afterall, he did draw conclusions with comparisons.

Honestly, for me, the issue is not related to having used Garmin for years, more having used Windows for years. It's not that the UI is not like Garmin's, but rather the UI is not like the vast majority of Windows programs. I feel one could just as easily compare the UI issues with Office, Photoshop or Firefox as one could with Mapsource.

Map transfers are time consuming. I used the precuts on the DVDs to get the entire state on. Aerial and satellite imagery is huge. Initially, this isn't going to be a spur of the moment transfer. It takes a day or two of advanced planning, downloading, cutting and transfering if you want to have this in place on the GPS for the area you're going to cache in.

When retrieving data, is there an expected ETA for when it will be available to download after requesting?

I'm just curious if it's reasonable under normal circumstances to be able to expect to download aerial/sat imagery for specific areas for short notice for outings or while traveling across country on a day to day basis and wondering, and would really appreciate hearing, what your experience has been so far in this regard.

Appreciate your views on this stuff :D

  6. I also know that Best Buy uses this as a deterrent to frivolous returns. For example, people buy a very expensive flat panel HDTV, use it to watch the Super Bowl, and then return it the following week. Sounds bizarre, but it happens frequently enough to be a real problem for big box electronics retailers.

If you want a no-questions-asked, no restocking fee returns policy, buy your GPSr at REI. You'll pay more, but it's worth it if you're not sure about the unit before you buy it.

The above is actually what both Best Buy and Circuit City cited to me for the return policy back when I lived in CA (almost 10 years ago?). I was told it was pretty common and they referred to it as 'renting' an item.

  7. I'm sharing this with everyone I know. Since many of you may be in the market for a new GPS or any other piece of electronic equipment, you need to know this.

Best Buy has a 15% restocking charge on returned items.

I recently purchased a GPS, opened it, didn't have the features I wanted, then returned it 3 days later, packaged EXACTLY the way that I bought. I paid cash and had my receipt. That's when they told me there was a 15% restocking charge because it had been opened....$45.00 !!!! to walk over and put it on the shelf. You would have never known it was opened. I said I was never told this, she told me it was on the back of my receipt. Who looks there? I spoke to the manager, he said that's store policy and he can't do anything about it.

Seeing as I wasn't going to get anywhere arguing, I said, fine, then just give me my money back. That's when the clerk said, it's over $250 so a check will be mailed to you within 10 days. WHAT???? I paid cash, I want my cash back. Sorry, that's store policy.

    I was shocked!!

If you want verification, look at Best Buy's website and it clearly states these policies.

I don't want to seem harsh, but in response to what I've marked in bold... people who want to know the return policy. This has been Best Buy's policy for quite a while. Same thing with issuing a check for money back over a certain amount. It just seems wise to always check a return policy prior to purchasing anything expensive (or otherwise for that matter).

And, as you say yourself, their website clearly states those policies...

  8. Help me here, this wasn't done in retaliation to something gc.com (supposedly) did?

I would suspect that it was more likely prompted by the 'call in gay' protest that was planned for today.

While I personally think it was an interesting idea on part of the CO to participate in that way (if that was their intention), not sure if I think it is a very effective method for spreading the word... but then, I'm not sure how effective or positive calling in sick today would have been either.

  9. In order to properly compare costs, you'll need to include the cost of City Navigator to the Garmin. The Delorme software comes with the GPS. You can't buy it separate. The software includes DVDs to load directly to the GPS for a smaller footprint as well as the full blown desktop Topo 7.

You can buy DeLorme's Topo 7... It's $99 for the national version (which is the same price for City Navigator NA) or $49.99 for the eastern/western versions.

No idea how it compares to City Navigator as I haven't used that. I haven't actually planned an auto route on Topo either. I did get to watch one of the DeLorme reps plan a quick route on Topo and it looked pretty easy :D

Ummmm you can't buy the GPS separate from the software.

I said you can buy Topo 7 separate and was trying to point out what a good deal it was (same price as City Navigator) that it was bundled (but obviously that didn't come across to well :D). It's almost like getting Topo 7 free or getting the PN-40 for really cheap, which I thought relevant to what raydur had asked.

You can buy it...but it also comes free with their GPS receivers. Given how cheap the PN20 is these days, if you want Topo, you might as well at least get a PN-20. The only additional software that Delorme sells to work with the PNs is Xmap. The main reason you would purchase Xmap would be to use your own sources of raster imagery and maps (downloads from government sites, downloadable park map pdfs, things of that nature) on the PN. The data that they include with it is the same as the data in Topo. Additionally, you can get routable canadian road data for Xmap if you need that.

Unless you need to route in canada, there's no software to buy for road routing with the PN-series. As mentioned above, results are mixed but generally adequate.

I realize that, I was (obviously poorly) attempting to point out the deal that buying DeLorme is that it comes with Topo 7 compared to Garmin and City Navigator (although there have been some Garmin bundles I suppose) Hope my point didn't come across as misleading! That's just a huge selling point.

  11. Thanks to all of you for the quick response. I have just ordered the PN-40 and I am sure I will be asking all sorts of questions when it arrives. Thanks again to all of you.

    Curly

I already warned everyone that as soon as I get mine I am starting a "I just got my PN40, HELP!" thread. Feel free to hijack it. LOL

To pass the unbearable wait unit Jan 1st (when I get to order my PN-40), I've been checking out the DeLorme forums. Highly recommended reading for anyone considering this unit over another or if one has questions. Not to discourage anyone from posting here, but there's *tons* of info there

  13. So, tell me true, Is there anything wrong with the one for $289? Every thing is the same as the $399 one as far as you can tell BUT something about the internal memory? I would really like to get a better GPSr and was hoping this could be the one. I would like to get the most for my bucks and just because it is cheaper priced, could it be misleading?

HOW does this one compare to the Garmin that everybody seems to like.

AND, Yes, I plan on getting a little more electronic savvy :)

    THANK YOU - in advance

Actually, the Amazon $289 price is for the $399 model listed at DeLorme. The 'SE' unit (which has the additional internal memory) is only sold at the DeLorme site and runs for $499.95 and $539.95, depending on the bundle. So, the $289 price is a considerable savings when looking at the list price. There's nothing wrong with it, it just doesn't have the extra internal memory and you'll likely want to buy additional memory in the form of a SD/SDHC card. You can buy yourself a 32 gb SDHC card and buy me a whole bunch of coffee for the difference between the $298 price PN-40 and the $500 PN-40 SE.

Whether this is the right unit for you or not really is up to you though and I can't recommend enough going down to a local REI/whatever and asking to play around with it. The aerial imagery is *awesome* and the recent screenshots of geocaching features (correct icons for different cache types and such :P) just blow me away. But at the same time, the fonts seemed pretty small on the unit and if that's something that really bugs you, that might be a deal breaker. The screen is pretty small on the PN-40, compared to newer Garmin's, but if you can deal with that, what's on that screen might be more than worth the trade off. Also, if you use Garmin now, you'll have to learn some new stuff (example, no GSAK support for DeLorme). But it doesn't look too painful :P

As for how if performs accuracy wise... I've read nothing but very positive reviews.

Only you can really decide that for sort of stuff for yourself :D And honestly, I don't have one and only played with one in store for like an hour or something...

That said, I know that I would gladly give the right arm of a number of people other than myself to have one right now :D

  14. Amazon has the PN-40 for $289 with free shipping! That's over $100 off! I wanted the SE, but man , that price is hard to pass up. Is there any difference with the SE besides the extra internal memory?

It's just the extra internal memory, although through Christmas DeLorme is shipping them with a belt case/clip and Maine calendar

I've seen a few accounts of people mentioning they were quickly filling up the internal memory and it sounded like it was the SE version that were being used. But as the unit will take SDHC cards up to 32 gb, you could probably add on more than the 8 gb internal of the SE for much cheaper.

  15. So the real Santa Clause walks up to you, because you have been oh so good this year and asks what geocaching thing-a-ma-jig you want for the holidays. What would it be?

Trying to build a Top Ten List of Geocachers wishes.

    -HHH

    DeLorme PN-40

    A Bucket o' Geocoins!

New waterproof gear so I stop breaking all my stuff in the rain :D

  16. True, you can't upload direct to the GPS, but you can export GPX, import to the map software (and soon to be released widget) then upload to the GPS.

TL, do you have a link or more information regarding that widget you mention?

The link coreynjoey posted to the DeLorme blog has some info on the widget.

  17. Yesterday, we were seeing Sasquatch in the most unexpected places. A number of times at the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle (from the display for the Six Million Dollar Man to the Big Foot action figure in the gift shop, he was all over!). Later we encountered one that seemed to want some of our donuts we'd picked up in Pike Place Market!

    big_foot.jpg

It even came up that we thought it would have been cool to have a Geo Sasquatch coin a few times as we could have gotten some interesting pictures.

So not only was it a *great* surprise when I opened up that mailer today that I assumed was a Christmas present for my wife that was supposed to come in last week, but it was also a little eerie after having encountered so much Sasquatch the day before!!

Thanks Geo Sasquatch! I'm planning to head up to Tunnel of Light soon and will bring this nice *big* coin along for the ride  Hoping to get up by Sky River Sasquatch (GCM7CQ) soon also and you can be sure the coin will be along for some pictures there
