  1. I've sent an e-mail with some thoughts. let me know if anything helps! if not I'll try again.
  2. just checking, but when you entered your coordinates did you change the E to a W on the longitude?
  3. Speaking of name calling... I know that muggle has a fairly innocent origin but it seems to be tossed around in conjunction with words like vandal, plunder and "us vs. them". maybe pre-cacher might be used, as how can one hear about caching and not get hooked???
  4. I've taken some nasty falls while bushwhacking but PTL have ended up w/ only bruises and scrapes. My worst injury was going on a 6-7 mi. hike in my new christmas hiking boots w/o bothering to break them in properly. the blister on my little toe still oozes!
  5. If "cut out" means turn itself off perhaps you have a battery saving feature whose default "time" needs to be changed???
  6. I've been in some tuff brush-busting searches and my e-trex has been through a lot. the display has a few minor scratches but it's still ticking! What has happened is that I have caught the carry cord in brush and had the plastic attachment for the cord ripped off on two different GPSr units. You might want to remove the cord in heavy brush and don't wear it around your neck.
  7. Good question. I don't know of a clip-on but I carry a "bugz-eye" lens which works well for 7.5 quad maps and tuff reads on my e-tex.
  8. here in the hills it's uaually bad news to stumble upon someones "special herb garden".
  9. I've placed a cache on school property but it is just off of a walking track open to the community at all times. a person in this area doesn't attract the attention of school officials.
  10. Once the GOTO is selected it's either a find or a DNF. If I return for a second try and find it I'll delete my DNF post (hate those purple stains).
  11. I usually go caching alone and most often have to drive at least an hour to search. LCs make a nice game of "I Spy" during the drive.
  12. for those of us who learned UTM from Uncle Sam it's hard to forget... "Read Right-Up"
  13. As part of my job I teach teachers how to integrate new technology into their classrooms. While looking for educational websites relatiing to using the GPSr in the classroom I wandered into gc.com and it looked like a fun way to get out of the office and increase my tech awareness.
  14. Worst Nightmare... I popped out of the woods in a city park in Steubenville OH and was walking back to my car when two young males pulled up in a car and wanted my money and valuables. unarmed, too tired to run, thankfully I had fallen down some muddy hills and looked like I was not worth it so I was able to bluff 'em. I thought about adding a handgun to my standard caching equipment but remembered the days when I carried an M-16 and decided that it might make me overly agressive when another out could be found. nothing against those who have made a different choice, just a personal decision.
  15. The largest amount of cold hard cache I've ever heard of was a $100 dollar bill placed in the flip top of an engraved zippo lighter as a FTF prize. the cache was a 5 star terrain! 13 Mile Cache (WV)
  16. junk vs. junque? depending on your personal tastes one person's idea of junk is another person's off-beat collectable junque. once again I try to use common sense and at least trade evenly but sometimes my idea of "neat stuff" hasn't matched up with those who follow me.
  17. Just a comment regarding a post that stated that they cache alone in urban settings so as not to draw attention. after caching alone in a park in Steubenville OH. I popped out of the woods onto a city street and was immediately "requested" to hand over my money by two young gentlemen. fortunately I had fallen down a few muddy hills and looked like I'd been on the road for awhile and they decided not to press the issue! I feel much safer in the boonies than on many city streets!
  18. with thanks to the civil rights activists of the past... Say it loud, WE'RE GEEK AND WE'RE PROUD!
  19. Avery also makes sheets of magnetic business cards which work well using the MS-Word template. 10 cards per sheet at $11 or so for 3 sheets.
  20. Getting a FTF means being willing to be the first to find out that the cache owner has made a typo in their posted coords.!
  21. I've noticed that some cachers seem to get a "bit upset" that posted coordinates do not lead them to within a few feet of a cache. how close is close??? [This message was edited by instep_guy on October 27, 2003 at 09:10 AM.]
