  1. Then show support for the one that created, and maintains, the program you like, and buy it! Some programs don't require support since they don't continue to grow and respond to us users like Clyde/Mr GSAK does. I don't think laying out $20 for a program that makes it easier to use a $100 - $400+ GPSr is an outrageous expenditure. If you don't feel that way, stick with EasyGPS. As they say, you get what you pay for. I found GSAK made my geocaching experience so much more enjoyable, I purchased a second subscription!
  2. Get cachemate, you won't be sorry. That is what I use on my Tungsten E. In fact, I send the data to cachemate with a GSAK Macro, that way the same data goes to my GPSr AND Cachemate.
  3. I second this, two of the best programs for geocaching ever....
  4. I would either download the file to my GPS with OZI and then upload the data into GSAK from the GPS or use 'Gartrax' which is available here: http://members.shaw.ca/davepatton/ozi/utilities.html It converts most of the most popular formats to other most popular formats.
  5. Has anybody seen the new google maps? Here is an example of one in the Ripon area. An what fairly new cache is in this picture? Lets hope we can start linking to these maps from www.geocaching.com. The map came from: http://maps.google.com Whose Treasure?
  6. This is from the geocaching.com site, either go there and download it or copy/paste it from here and make it as small as you want.
  7. I would ask Garmin to: 1. Keep up the GREAT hardware support 2. Add SD memory capabilities (NOT under the batteries, for obvious reasons). I really don't want to remove the batteries to change SD cards with other maps on them. 3. Remove the lock on software products 4. Share your great color screen display technoloty with PDA makers so I can read both when I am outside geocaching and not head for some shade when I want to enter data in my PDA. That's it.
  8. Just stumbled across the USAPhotoMaps update program (that came out yesterday) and updated my GSAK program to use USAPhotoMaps. It works better than advertised, kudos to Doug Cox for his email answer to my install question and for a great program.
  9. I used a suction cup mount next to the post on the left inside windshield on my Dodge Truck. It is out of the way and works for me. I put a piece of double sided tape on the suction cup rubber and stuck it to the glass, and even in the heat/sun of Baja, it hasn't come off. Inside Pic Outside Pic
  10. Downloaded the two files (MapAdvisor & Maps), sent them to the PDA, started up MapAdvisor, received error saying to run the other program first, did so, got ERROR and had to do a hard reset on the Palm. Then purged the programs on the Palm and also the downloads. Thanks but no thanks. This is the second time I have tried this program. BTW, if one cannot install a program after following the read me, something is wrong. You really should make the software a little more user friendly to install or document it a little better. It is a $20 dollar program and should not be that difficult. If I am able to download OZI, SID Maps, calibrate the maps, download geocache waypoints to those maps, add tracks, create routes, upload and download to my GPS's, load non-Mapsource maps of Baja Mexico into my Garmin60cs, I should be able to install this program correctly at least once out of the last two times I tried it.
  11. I cache in order to see interesting places that I would not otherwise know about or stumble across.
  12. You said, ""When I find a place I want to bring other cachers to, I look for somewhere to hide a container. Isn't that what this game is about?"" Yes, that is what the game is all about but what do you do when you want to bring other cachers to a cool place where you can not hide a cache either because of the area or geocaching restrictions? You said, ""Isn't that what this game is about? Finding neat places, then figuring out how to get other cachers to see it?"" Yes, that is what it is all about and sometimes a virtual is the only way to do that. You said, ""Since this game is called geocaching, doesn't it make sense that you should try to put a container there? Where does it say that in order to geocache a container has to be involved? Did I miss something? I have read the other post you have started slamming virtuals and I don't see it there either?
  13. Just make sure you get one with USB capabilities and get more than 2mb. My old Palm didn't have either and those are the two things I didn't have with my first Palm. I upgraded and now am able to load more waypoints and do it via USB. Once you get familiar with GSAK and Cachemate, you will want the memory believe me.
  14. Please see the help file for the valid export types. But to cut to the chase the line for Topo USA should be: Export Type=DEL File="C:\DeLorme Docs\Draw\Yuma.txt" OK, I see it has changed from TXT to DEL, thanks Clyde. BTW, I did go to the 'help', 'contents' 'index' before writing. The first entries that show up in that window, in the #2 Click the index...., are ".CSV .GPX .LOC .MPS .MXF .PDB .PSP .TPG .TXT .WPT .ZIP", but no .DEL. So I didn't search anymore and just wrote here. After I got your answer above, I did go to the 'FIND' tab and see that is where I should have gone in the first place. Thanks again for the great GSAK program.
  15. It has been a while since I used this macro (that did work fine a while back) but now I am getting this error: Error in Macro at line: 11 Export Type=TXT File=C:\DeLorme Docs\Draw\Yuma.txt" Error=>Export Type is nvalid:TXT Macro will now abort (yes, invalid is spelled nvalid, in the message) What is wrong? PS: I am trying to export a file to be opened in Topo USA as a draw file.
  16. More about this here. Thanks, great page for info.
  17. It doesn't stand out in the phono, how abou taking the photo into Paint and circling the cache then uploading? Just a thought....thanks.
  18. Sounds like it is not on 'off road' navigation and the needle is pointing to the closest road, not the cache as the feet are counting down. Just a though. When I get close to a cache I hit 'menu', 'recalculate' and 'off-road', works everytime.
  19. When you exported your waypoint file to the GPSr, did you change the waypoint name tag? I use %drop2-%dif1a-%ter1a so waypoint 'GCHHX5' comes out like this HHX5-C-A indicatiing a difficulty of C which equals 3.5 and a terrain of A which equals 1.5 For an explanation of this, after you select send waypoints, from the GPS tab, click in the 'you can ....waypoint name tag' box and then click 'help' on the bottom and it will open a box. When the help screen comes up, click in the same box 'you can ....waypoint name tag' and a 'Waypoint Name' box will come up. Then click on the 'special tags' words in the first sentence. A whole definition of what you can use will come up. Good luck.
  20. Com ports are spooky things. I am running XP. I have a USB Garmin (60cs) and a serial Garmin (GPS III) which I connect via a serial to USB adapter. At first I had to go to the GPS tab in the GSAK program and select ports one by one and attempt a transfer. When I got to com4, IT WORKED. There are probably a thousand explanations out there as to why it is this way but I didn't need a technical explanation, I needed a working transfer. Try changing the com port and then sent the waypoint again, if that doesn't work, change it to the next one and so on and so on. Good luck.
  21. Bring up your database. Then under file select open and open the file that contains some or all your updated waypoints. It will merge the two into the database that is open. When done, it will tell you how many were added and how many were updated. That is all there is to it. The new database will have the updated data.
  22. Basically you download your waypoints to cachemate, When you find a cache, you mark it found, and log your info in cachemate. When you return back to your PC, hook up your sync cable and in cachemate you select 'Expot Logs' and from there you can load the data back up to your Palm Desktop Application. That is what I do and then I logon to geocaching.com and manually enter the data from the memo page in the Palm Desktop. There is a way to enter the data automatically and it has been discuss a bunch somewhere in the 'cachemate' forum but I couldn't find it. I just went to Google search and entered 'Cachemate paperless geocaching' and Google came back with a bunch of information. Good luck
  23. I concur on their excellent support, my neighbor called Garmin and got an rma for his GPS 12 which wouldn't power up on batteries or external power. He sent it in, they fixed it alright, they sent him a new unit. What customer support! On one hand I thought I shouldn't be telling everyone for fear that they may swarm Garmin with units wanting to do the same but then I came to my senses and realized this kind of advertising is why I bought from them in the first place. I just had a great experience with them on the software side. I purchased Mapsource City Select last summer. I installed in and was a happy camper. Last weekend I had a problem and had to reload my system from the CD's that came with it. Of course I had to reload all program CD's and internet downloads too. When I got to the Mapsource disk I had errors installing. It looks like scratches on the CD. Anyhow, I called them, gave them my customer number and was told new CD's are on the way, 2nd day air. Way to go Garmin. I wished DeLorme had half the custome support of Garmin, but then that is another forum.
  24. Haven't seen anything here in the 60cs forum, maybe there is more info over in the battery forum?
