  1. I just recently upgraded to Plus in order to get the GPS option. The 'You must purchase the Plus version to us this function' box came up. I think it was very well done and well worth the $20. I use it all the time for uploading my GPSr WP's, Routes and Tracks.
  2. Cachemate allows you to view by either Wpt or Name (See the 'Sort By' tab at the bottom of the cachemate screen). If you get GSAK, you can go so far as to drop the 'GC' from the waypoint and send the waypoints to both the palm and the garmin, you will love it.

  4. Hummmmmmmmm, edit button: It says here, 'used for editing my post' as in making a large post small. I bet it could make a large post totally disappear.
  5. Just wanted to put in a plug for a Yuma Event in January called 'First R.A.C.E. (GCQYD9). It is a three day event on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We plan on attending.
  6. Nothing you mentioned in your request warrants the expense of a pc. I would go with GSAK and Cachemate on a PDA. Take the time to get use to GSAK and you will wonder why you didn't buy a PDA a long time ago, especially for geocaching. You mentioned you wanted to drop your PQ's in it and have your cache pages with you. The combo mention will do that very well. I know, I have a 60cs and Palm Tungsten E and am very happy with the combo.
  7. Yaaaaa, now you tell me. Yep, I was definitely caught alright! I tell you Sputnik, I almost opened the manual for this one. Thanks for the heads up....
  8. Along the lines of the prior post, you might want to think about giving the final position of the cache in the description, if you want people to find it. I didn't do that at first and the cactus growth covered some of them up, ruining an evening for some cachers who were here on vacation (this cache is in Baja, Mexico). I now have the final location of the cache so they can get credit for what I consider a hard cache and most won't get the chance to come back and try later. Just a thought. My cache is GCHB61, San Felipe After Dark.
  9. Here's some information to file away in case this happens to you. I have been using the 60cs and GSAK, for geocaching, for about 16 months. Yesterday I cleared out all waypoints in preparation for a download. I downloaded 200 waypoints, or so I thought. Only 5 displayed. I tried it again but same thing. Then I did another PQ for the same area. This time 12 of the 200 displayed. I went to bed and slept on it. This morning after doing a cold start, same 12. Then I checked the waypoint page and hit 'find by name'. I cancelled out of that and all 200 were there. Somewhere along the line, I change the reference although I don't remember doing it. I was in panic mode for all too long. All is ok now.
  10. Yep, took his ball and went home, sure showed us!
  11. I probably would have if the store I went to for a GPS mount stocked them. But since I already had the Garmin mount, this was what I came up with. And, I did wear my glasses when I ground the plastic out.
  12. Here is how I got around the power cord problem on the Garmin Suction Cup Holder. I just cut the cradle out where the power cord goes. Works for me.
  13. I looked at the macro and read one of the previous cachers method and I think mine is a lot simpler. I log the finds in cachemate and change the cache to found when I do. Then I export the 'found' logs to memos. Then I hot sync. Then I bring up the palm desktop application and click on the memos tab. There are my entries. I split my monitor to two views, on I have up the memos window and the other I bring up GC.com. I then copy the date from memos in to the GC.com cache page. It sure is easier than making all those entries in GSAK and then running the GSAK macro to log caches. I guess that is because I don't find any advantage to have a GSAK database with found caches in it as I can get that with a PC from GC.Com? Good luck.
  14. I wonder why none of the Northerners love CVC Tag any more. Poor guy is just sitting up there since early October! I'll go get it, wait, hey I can't, I am back in Baja. Maybe next time. Thanks for the fun this summer at the coffee break and the SR71 event, it was fun meeting new people and seeing some old faces. Not much going on caching wise here. Just got to get ready for the three day caching event in Yuma, AZ in January, GCQYD9) First R.A.C.E. YUMA
  15. I too would be interested in the Mechanics of exporting my Palm Memos to GC.Com. I remember reading it could be done but can't remember where I read that. Currently I export Cachermate Found Logs to Memos, hot sync the Palm and then bring up the desktop Palm Memos tab and manually enter them in to GC.Com. Automating this would be helpful. Thanks.
  16. Will you be relocating to Paris? Just kidding, a gps is a gps. From all I have read on these forums over the years, they are both pretty good units. Today was my last day of work so I am going back into retirement and full-time geocaching, yea, its' a tough job but somebody has to do it. There are not a lot of caches in baja, where I live, but it is nice to have the forums to play in.
  17. Yea, Yea, Yea Chevy vs Ford France (Magellan Parent Company is French) vs USA (Garmin is a USA Company)
  18. I'll drink to that. I had to do the same thing one generation back after a computer crash (why do they do that anyhow?). Well, my original version was scratched (possibly my fault for faulty storage technique) and I called Garmin and they looked up the fact that I have version 5 and UPDATE version 6. They sent me a fresh version 6. GREAT Company that Garmin.
  19. If any CVC cachers have any travel bugs that they would like to send south, like almost to Baja, Mexico (to GCJ0ZM in El Centro), (or even to our travel bug hotel in San Felipe GCHEF5), I am leaving for San Felipe, Baja, Mexico on Monday. I am in Tracy near Hwys 120 & Hwy 5. Let me know and maybe we could meet up. I am fairly close to Green Acres. Just a thought.
  20. IMHO, I think it is a solution going somewhere to happen. Really don't see what it offers over what we already have at our fingertips. We have great maps and satellite pictures now. We have GSAK for sorting caches 10 ways to Tuesday that sends them to be viewed on professional maps and Google Earth. We have export programs for sending waypoints to Palms and Pocket PC's for use in the field.
  21. Yes, but I don't think you will be able to do it by the weekend. I just set up and tested the downloads for all caches 1/4 mile from my route from Tracy, California to Calexico, California, about 550 miles. This is the process: Download areas of waypoints from gc.com. I believe I used 6 downloads via lat/lon along the way. With GSAK, merge them into one database. With a mapping program, I used S/A 2006, create a route. Save the route, open it in a GSAK macro and set the parameters before running the macro. Download the waypoints to the GPSr and Palm and head out. I tested on a small trip of 50 miles a couple of weekends ago and with do the real deal a week from today after updating my PQ's. It takes a little to learn how but help is out there especially in the GSAK help screens.
  22. Realy wrong if that cacher that is going to place 9 of these for a multi in a 6 square mile area places them "in the woods", I mean come on..!!!!! Cry havoc! None of them will be in the woods though. I intend to make this a wheelchair accessible cache also. I think that is a cool idea since they will work in places with a lot of foot traffic.
  23. When I started geocaching I did a night time cache where one follows reflectors into a county winderness park. There were three of us on this hund. The coordinates of the cache were to the trail head and from there all that was needed was a flashlight. So, I left the GPSr in the car. Off we went. An hour later we had the cache and followed the trail back to the truck, almost. We missed the trail to the parking area by about 1/3 a mile and came down in a neighboorhood about 3/4 of a mile from the car. I did have a backup GPSr in my backpack and luckly had the cache page in there too. I punched in the coordinates where we parked and said 'that way'. Unfortunately, the streets in this area were all courts up to the mountains edge, so, it was a lot longer trip to the car going out to the crossroad, down a couple of courts and then back to the trail head. Lesson learned, ALWAYS take the GPSr and turn on track back.
