  1. A main issue is that not everyone knew where to look for updates. Reading the forum posts after the weekend I learned that updates were posted to Twitter, Jeremy's blog, and Facebook. But never knew about these until after the outage, and I still don't know which Facebook group had the updates. I had to do some searching to find a reference to how to find the blog. But where are updates posted on Facebook? There are hundreds of groups with the word geocaching in the group name. Which is the "official" one? If updates are being posted during outages then there should be links to those locations on the main gc.com page so that cachers know about them. Obviously we can't go to gc.com in an outage to click the links. But if we know about their existence then we can bookmark them in advance. Hope these can be promoted a bit more. Thanks.
  2. I can't see any usefulness to that idea. Why would it be a good idea, or why is this needed? If someone disagrees with a post they are certainly free to post an opposing opinion. I don't think the forums need a voting system to show how many people agree or disagree with a poster or what someone writes. Besides, the results wouldn't be valid due to self-selection. Unless everyone votes the results are only representative of those who vote.
  3. The TBs that I retrieved that day are still not showing a cache name in the line where it says "retrieved from <name of cache>". I had retrieved them using the wap.geocaching.com page. Wonder if that has something to do with it?
  4. Hi Eartha, Thanks for the update. Well, I did notice other things over the weekend! LOL But with everything back up I didn't attribute the TB issue to the server down issue, especially when other TB logs didn't seem to have the same problem. But what you are saying makes sense. Thanks for the link to Jeremy's blog. Today I saw some posts with references to the blog, but I had never even known about the blog, much less where to find the blog. Seems that something like that should be a bit more publicized so people will know it's available, or know to look there when GC.com is down. Also, other posts mentioned there were updates on Facebook, but I don't know where on Facebook that was. There seem to be hundreds of Facebook groups with the name geocaching in them. Thanks for the reply! :-)
  5. Over the weekend I noticed that after retrieving a TB from a cache that the log entry no longer displays the name of the cache that it was retrieved from. This is not only on my own TBs, but also on other TBs that I retrieved. Here's an example: http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.as...0e-cb1cb790f674 Any ideas on what is causing this?
  6. For those who don't do the twitter thing, what Facebook group was posting updates on the server issue? I searched Facebook groups for the word geocaching and it says "over 500 group results for geocaching." From this thread it sounds like people were able to read updates as the issue went on, but where on Facebook were these updates posted? Thanks.
  7. That is a great story. Thanks for sharing it. Since you had a GPS with you, couldn't it have shown you a map of where you were and presumably the names of nearby streets to tell the tow truck driver? I'll have to check out AlabamaRambler's Online Geocacher. Sounds interesting.
  8. You are right that dropping a TB will create a log on the cache. But his question was about logging a TB out of a cache. Yes, the issue of deleting a "write note" log used to drop a TB could be a whole other discussion! (Where's that eating popcorn icon? )
  9. Hi Alabama, Hey, the guy wanted feedback. Should I look at his site and offer only glowing praise? Or since he seemingly wants to improve his product and asked for suggestions then I could give him that. When he asked for suggestions, what should I have deduced that he was not interested in hearing about? One could say to me that if I don't have anything positive to say then I shouldn't say anything at all. I'll point out again that he asked for feedback. If william banfield posts back that he was insulted by my comments then I will gladly apologize to him through this forum and will refrain from offering him additional feedback on his site even when asked. There was nothing at all about my post that was to imply "Get an education in English."
  10. If you are asking for feedback, I would second the suggestion that you create the majority of your content before trying to promote the site. I have been to sites in progress and if they don't have much available then I am unlikely to return again. Another suggestion is that images should relate to the site's topic. The picture on your home page has no relevance to geocaching. Another suggestion for good website design is to use correct grammar and spelling. The pronoun "I" isn't spelled "i" The word "you're" means "you are" (that sentence should use "your") Typo in the sentence "Please fell free to upload your pictures" Numerous misspellings and punctuation errors on the "what GPSr to buy" page Learn when to use apostrophes and when not to. For example, adding a s to make a word plural doesn't require an apostrophe. Paperless geocaching is not limited to PDAs. I do paperless caching with my BlackBerry. If you list a price, show in US dollars in addition to British pounds. I would remove the forums section. You will likely get very few posts there. A page with a wide variety of geocaching links would be nice. Hope I'm not listing too many criticisms, but I think if you want a professional looking site you have to write professionally. And you did ask for feedback. Good luck!
  11. I think the linked instructions from Keystone need to be updated. Step #4 doesn't seem to work that way. When I click the hyperlinked image name the image does display in the middle of the window, but the URL of the image is not available there. You can only click "Close" to close the image display. The only way I can get the image's URL is to click the image "edit" hyperlink, then right-click the image, and then select View Image to open the photo onto its own page with its own URL. Then you can copy the URL from the browser address box.
  12. I never knew there was a connection between Buckingham Palace and the song Bennie and the Jets. Can you tell me how they're connected? Good TB goal, BTW.
  13. The first TB I ever found was in Nashville, TN, and it had previously been logged two years earlier into a cache near Buffalo, NY. I still check in on that TB occasionally, although sadly it looks like it has been missing for almost a year now. Edit: To clarify, it was not logged into the Nashville cache. It appeared to have been missing for two years since the last log entry in Buffalo.
  14. I read a tip once that suggested when parking at a trail head you shouldn't move valuable items to the trunk at that point, as a thief watching from a parked car will know to break into your car. Instead, move items to the trunk before arriving at the parking area, so when you do arrive you just get out of the car and head for the trail.
  15. There's no apostrophe in the address. Use www.itsnotaboutthenumbers.com Or just type the addreviated version: www.inatn.com I use that site for my maps. http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=89...81-b014c31223b6
  16. OK, I stand corrected. I see the difference. Thanks!
  17. Thanks Prime Suspect. I just had never clicked any image and not had a larger image display. But I see the explanation that the larger image displayed as the log. Still, clicking the image on the log brought up a still larger image. I was just puzzled why a large image would never appear based on an image uploaded to a cache page. I think I'll need to add a log to get the image in the usual format. Just didn't want to clutter up the cache page with a log entry just for the picture. Thanks much!
  18. If you originally picked up the TB in another place (i.e. not locally), you might want to transfer it to your friend by logging it into a local cache (by logging a note on the local cache) and then have your friend log it out of that cache. That way the TB shows that it moved through your local area, rather than a jump from some other location to where your friend takes it. You don't have to physically place it into the local cache, just by logs. Now, as I write this I wonder if some people will say this shouldn't be done, since the TB wasn't physically at the local cache. But it's really no different than someone dipping their personal TB into every cache they visit and retrieving back. Either way the TB wasn't really placed in that cache container.
  19. I don't see anything wrong with doing that. After all the purpose of TBs is to travel. Whether you have previously visited a cache or not, the process of logging a TB out of the cache is the same. You're not creating a log on the cache, but on the TB. To log a TB out of a cache first go to the travel item's page. For type of log select "Retrieve from <name of cache>." Enter the TB number and click submit log entry. The TB is then logged out of the cache and is in your inventory. Have a fun vacation!
  20. UPDATE: The two issues do seem related. The second time I clicked recalculate mileage, the mileage appeared and a link to view the map was available for the first time.
  21. Does this problem also affect the TB map feature? I have a TB that has been dropped and retrieved from two caches but there is no link to view its map. Will a map not be available until the mileage is fixed?
  22. When one uploads an image to one's own cache page, when you click the image thumbnail in 'view gallery' the cache page loads instead of the image. Why would this happen? Anytime I have ever clicked on an image thumbnail in any cache page the full image loads, not the cache page. Thanks for any ideas.
  23. Since you just introduced me to the word, "Frumious", ALR means Additional Logging Requirements... caches that required you to do something before you could log a find (simplified definition). Why is Jane so frumious?
  24. And goodness knows we can't allow baby killers and Jesus freaks to infiltrate geocaching. They represent the worst of society..... I find your analogy/reference offensive. I hope you didn't mean it the way it was written. What exactly is "offensive" about that analogy? It's a perfectly good analogy. Some people might find your descriptive "Jesus freaks" to be offensive.
