  1. Another cool satellite page is Heavens-Above . You can enter your exact location and get a listing of upcoming times when a satellite will visibly pass overhead. It's fun to know exactly when and where to look up and see a satellite go over. Some are fairly dim, but some are bright and quite visible. Particularly bright are the Iridium Flares! If you see something moving in the night sky and don't know if it is an airplane or a satellite, the airplanes blink but the satellites do not.
  2. I'm a bit puzzled about the original question and the "if it came down to it" statement. I mean, why is the question being asked. Is there some current financial reason why the site might "go down the tubes"? Is there an imminent financial issue, or is someone just testing the waters to see how much more could be collected? The question seems kind of meaningless unless there's some actual definable issue and prospective financial solution being considered. Please let me know if I missed something here.
  3. I also like seeing where a TB goes after I have moved one along. But instead of adding a watch to each bug, I go to the "My Account" page and click Bugs under My Logs. All the TBs I have ever had are shown there. Of course you don't get an e-mail every time one is logged, but it's easy enough to just click on each one you want to see.
  4. When people leave a higher-end sig item, is that usually in addition to any trade items left? Or do nicer sig items get left in caches as trade items? I'm picturing nicer sig items like carabiners, wooden nickels, etc., not something like a business card.
  5. I can't answer the specific question, but since you misplaced your owners manual here's a link where you can download your unit's manual: eTrex Vista Cx owners manual Good luck.
  6. Just curious, in countries where the date format is dd/mm/yyyy, how are dates spoken? Do they say "sixteenth of August," or do they say "August sixteenth"? How would a newspaper article write out a date? Would they write "16 August" or "August 16"? Just wondering if spoken and written words correspond to the dd/mm pattern. I just looked at the web site for the London Times and found in their artricles instances of dates written as month and number. If countries speak dates as month and day, why don't they use the mm/dd format? Not trying to be US-centric, just asking the question.
  7. That makes sense. I thought that by clicking the first option that when someone viewed my profile and went to the bookmarks tab that the bookmarks would be displayed. Didn't realize that one has to create an HTML link and add it there. If the public profile has a bookmarks tab seems that bookmarks should be there if public viewing is enabled. But I guess manually creating the link will be OK if it is needed. Thanks StarBrand.
  8. Hello- I have created a bookmark list that I would like to be viewable by anyone who looks at my profile. There is a tab on the profile page for "Bookmark Lists." But I don't think it is necessary for a cache listing that I have bookmarked to show that I have bookmarked it. There are two options on the edit bookmark page that seem relevant: If I click "Make this list public" it will show on listings. So it seems logical that I want to only click "I want to share this list with others." But when I click only that, the list doesn't show on my profile page. An I doing something wrong? Or do I have to click both for either to occur? I guess I don't know the difference between each of the first two checkable options. Thanks for any help!
  9. With me being relatively new to caching this is an interesting conversation. I have had unsolicited hints e-mailed to me twice after I logged DNFs (they didn't give me the exact location, just an additional hint). I appreciated the hints. In one case I went back and was able to solve the puzzle in the multi. In the other I haven't yet gone back, but will soon. Some in this conversation feel that caches are meant to be earned, and that assistance should not be used or offered. But if one applies that philosophy to team hunts, isn't just being on a team the same as receiving/giving assistance in locating a cache? Someone in a group will first spot a cache and everyone else signs the log. That seems like a LOT more help was used than when one is given an e-mailed hint. It may not be the same thing, but I'm just writing my thoughts.
  10. Could you go back and get the coin and then place it somewhere else? Another idea would be to hope that whoever picks up the coin will "drop it" into that cache and then "grab it" back from the cache. By doing that the coin would get a log that it was in that cache. ( The first TB that I found was never logged into the cache where I found it. The cache owner suggested that I do this to get the bug logged.) I'm still new to this, so if these ideas aren't right please correct me.
  11. Another site to get a map for your profile is "It's not about the numbers." I spotted a map from this site on someone's profile. It works by uploading your weekly My Finds pocket cache results. It generates all sorts of stats and several maps. A feature of the maps is that instead of just coloring the visited states it changes the color of each state depending on how many caches have been found in the state. Also generates a map that shows quantity of finds by county. http://www.itsnotaboutthenumbers.com/
  12. Thanks for the GREAT ideas, everyone! I'll see what combinations might be currently unused and available. I personally like CACHE. Will have to post back with a photo once I get the plate at the end of September (when the current one expires). THANKS AGAIN!
  13. Your original post asked the geocaching community about your idea. You got multiple answers about the generally accepted fashion. You are reading the advice of "the geocaching community" but yet you don't like what you're hearing or don't want to listen. I'm pretty new at geocaching, and if the community suggested that something I wanted to do in this game wasn't within the community guidelines I'd drop that idea like a hot potato and not try to weasel around the guidelines anyway.
  14. I'm thinking about getting a personalized license plate that expresses geocaching. However the specialty license plate that I would like to get is limited to only five characters for personalization. Do any of these combinations seem to "read" geocache? GOKSH GOCSH GEOCH GEOCA Anyone have another 5-character idea? This is the specialty plate I like: The generic state plate can be personalized with seven characters, but there are no graphics on the personalized plate and it looks boring. I could still get the generic plate anyway and say something like: GEOCASH But I would really prefer a nice looking plate like the sample above. Thanks for any feedback!
  15. Thanks FamilyDNA! I found it now. I knew that the feature existed but it still wasn't obvious to find. I had gone around and around trying to find it. Your reply got me right there! I appreciate your post. (Seems that there should be a link on the pocket query page to do this.)
  16. I have been reading that one can set up to receive instant notification e-mails of any new cache in an area. But I can't see any place to do this. There's nothing obvious on the pocket query page. Plus the only options for running queries are to set in advance what days the query should run, nothing that says to send an instant notification whenever there's a new query in my area. (Hope I'm explaining this correctly.) And the options for PQ results are all non-text formats (.gpx, etc). So do you then receive the instant notification e-mail with an attached .gpx file and translate it through other software (vs just reading a text e-mail)? This is probably obvious once you know how. But even finding the pocket query page is difficult, as I can't find a link to it and have to do a search in the search box on the main web site page to find it. I am a premium member. Can someone tell me what I am not seeing, please? Thanks very much!
  17. I have a Vista Cx and I found that I have to select Menu=> Setup=> Waypoints. I have done the same download process as you, downloading geocache info directly into the GPS unit. For some reason the geocache data end up under waypoints instead of geocaches, even though the icons are the treasure chest icons like geocaches should have. There may be a setup option somewhere that would put them into the right category, but for now I just look in waypoints where I know them to be.
  18. I was reading the post from the Tb owner who saw three (Discovered) entries and no one moved the Tb. I discovered a Tb last week, but it was in a travel bug hotel where the cache owner suggested not taking a bug if you didn't leave a bug. I didn't want to take the last remaining Tb from the hotel if I had no bugs to leave, so I left it there. Since it is a bug hotel, I hope someone will pick up the bug soon. I guess one needs to consider both the Tb owner's goal and the cache owner's requests in deciding whether to pick up a bug or not.
  19. Well, that would describe me yesterday on my first geocaching attempt, having bought my first GPS the previous day. So, do only rookies carry printouts??? Took my two boys with me. We didn't find the first two we looked for, but found the third one! Actually my five-year old spotted it. I was standing there and didn't see anything. Then my son points to something and asks "What's that?" Looking forward to finding more!
