  1. I purchased a cheap used PC for $40. I use that to download the maps.

Since we have a Etrex Legend and a GPS Map 60c, I use MacSimpleGPS and my Mac to download waypoints using a serial connection.

If you are a Mac user, you want to buy a GPS with a serial connection or both serial and USB. This is why we did not purchase the Legend C--it's USB only.

    Yeah, I know...hindsight is 20/20 :signalviolin:

  2. Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

It is true that City Select has been replaced by City Navigator. The map

sets are broken down by state, so there are a few maps that would be too

large for the unit you have. For all of the US there are only four maps that

are 24mb or higher, that's it. It is also possible that the next version of

City Navigator may go back to the way it was. So no, I don't see why you

would need to buy a new unit with more memory.

    Best regards,

    Jason M.

I'm assuming that of the four states that will not fit, three of them will be our country's most populated states (New York, California and Texas).

And what if one of these four areas is where I live?

Jeez, is this Garmin talking or Apple computer? This reminds me of the kind of stuff that Apple computer has done over the years, in effect alienating the loyal Mac users and making them look elsewhere for a computer.

A LOT of people who purchased a Garmin recently are going to be angry about this.

It might be a good time to purchase stock in Magellan!

  3. I sure wish I could figure out what is the huge problem with selling geocoins on eBay?

This isn't food for starving people that is being sold. It's just a token. No one NEEDS a geocoin. Why do you care what other people choose to spend their extra $$ on?

If you don't want to pay for it, don't buy it. It's that simple. If someone is willing to spend $50 on a coin, then the coin is worth that much to that buyer. That is the way an auction works. No one spends more than they want to.

I like to collect icons like the next cacher and I have been buying the state coins, however, one of the state coins was a little too expensive for me, so I chose not to buy that one. That was my choice but I'm not mad at the seller for selling it for a higher price than I would pay and I'm not mad at others for choosing to buy it.

Are there not more important things to gripe about than geocoins on ebay?

  4. As far as I'm concerned, unless the group is doing some sort of illegal activity, just about any event should be allowed to be an event cache.

Cool, that would open it up to Amway sales meetings, prayer groups, anti war protests, mayonnaise eating contests, knitting bees, timeshare seminars, baby showers, poetry readings and brisses .

Hmmm...actually I'll give you a little of this one.

Since things of a sales nature are not allowed in regular caches--ie business cards, sales flyers, ads, business opportunities--then things of a sales nature should also not be allowed at an event cache.

So the Amway meetings and timeshare seminars would be out BUT the prayer groups and mayo eating contest would be in! :(

    Yes!

And you can choose not to go to these events if you aren't interested in them! Others, who are interested, can attend.

    Imagine that!

  6. I think people are getting way too anal about this stuff.

As far as I'm concerned, unless the group is doing some sort of illegal activity, just about any event should be allowed to be an event cache.

I mean, why does it matter? Is someone worried about cachers "running up their numbers" on event caches because there are so many event caches out there? Who cares?

This is certainly an area where the approvers could relax a little bit.

  7. I was floored to see a Compass Rose coin for a buy it now price of $50 when you can order one from CnP for $8 here:http://coinsandpins.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=ACP&Category_Code=Comp-rose

    Unbelievable

    Scam?

If I go to the "Ma and Pa" store on the street corner and notice that the prices are higher than the prices at Wal-Mart, does that make everything in the "Ma and Pa" store a scam?

Not at all, but if that ma and pa store sold gas at 4.00 a gallon recently the State Attorney General would be looking at charging them with price gouging.

True, but I don't agree with that either. "Price Gouging" (the popular word with politicians) is simply nothing more than the market at work. When the government tries to fix prices, other problems can develop.

Just because the government has a problem with someone's price doesn't mean the government is right to do something about it. This isn't the only issue where the government has "good intentions" and still managed to create other problems with their actions.

  9. I've been using my Garmin 60C while riding my ATV for over a year now. No problems except when I rolled the quad and it smashed the 60C into several pieces. The RAM mount didn't survive the rollover either. Other than that, it has been great! I have had no shutdowns due to vibration since I started using di-electric grease on the terminals. My wife uses a Legend while riding her quad. No problems there either. She doesn't roll the quad like I do.

  10. This is a good reason to only buy every third or fourth version of the mapping software. I didn't notice much difference between version 5 and version 6, so I'm going to just skip version 7 and wait for version 8 or 9. Not worth the $100 IMHO.

Makes me also wonder how much more memory version 7 takes up than version 6? Version 6 uses up about 50% more memory than version 5! This also makes me want to put off upgrading. I'll put up with slightly older maps in order to get more maps on my unit.

  11.

All that said, retail chains make such huge markups I would NEVER feel guilty saving/profiting from a mistake in my favor.

I always find it interesting how people justify being just "a little" dishonest.

What if this was a little kid working his lemonade stand and he accidently gave you back too much change? Would you keep it and take off with a grin on your face knowing that you had gotten a really good deal on lemonade?

What's the difference? Why does it matter what the "markup" is? Why is it okay to take money from the store because of their mistake and not from the little kid with the lemonade stand?

  12. I have noticed that the rubber gasket on my bison capsule caches goes bad after about 6 months. I went to the hardware store and bought a bunch of them for replacements. They were really cheap. I don't recall exactly--maybe $.10 each?

I noticed that sunlight seems to be tougher on these gaskets than rain. If the cache was exposed to the sun, the rubber seems to go bad faster.

  13. Not sure if this has been suggested but I'd like to see a system where the finders can rate terrain and difficulty.

The average is then taken of all finders ratings to give the overall terrain and difficulty shown on the cache page. The hider would post his/her ratings for the initial rating of the cache then after that it is an average of all finders that rate the cache terrain/difficulty.

The reason I suggest this is because what one person may think is rough terrain someone else may find easy. Same with the difficulty. Over time the ratings would average out to what most finders would consider the cache to actually be.

I think you read my mind. I recently thought of this same exact idea while looking for some poorly rated caches. Hopefully, someday it will happen.
