  1. I always enjoyed trying to get someone to invoke Godwins Law.
  2. quote:You won't believe, but GPS is more complicated than searching for ammo-boxes. <heh heh> Yeah, I know. Just seemed like the right thing to say after all the words I couldn't even pronounce.
  3. quote:Wheelchair Question... Does a '1' mean that a person in a wheelchair would be able to do the cache by themselfs, or does it mean that they will be able travel everywhere during the cache hunt; however they may need the assistance of a more mobile person to retrieve the cache, etc? Hmmm... I dunno. Of course, handicapped doesn't just refer to wheelchairs. And in some cases even an individual in a wheelchair might be more able to do a given cache than an individual who is not considered handicapped. A dwarf or midget, for example, might not be able to reach a cache that someone in a wheelchair could. It's debateable I suppose as to if a dwarf or midget is considered handicapped, but I don't consider them handicapped. I guess that speaks to a point that 'handicapped' is to subjective, just as often is the rating system.
  4. quote:I would recommend to start with a patch antennea. But it's also very hard to build a working one without the possibility to use a network-analyzer. If you use copper-boards with air as the dielectricum, the epsilon is hard to define and you can not give a simple recipe. But it's definitly worth to try. Don't forget to tune the flux capacitor prior to charging the dilithium crystal matrix.
  5. That's what the terrain rating is for isn't it? Just searching for 1's only ought to suffice.
  6. Hmmm... Maybe putting together a query that would take a start coord, destination coord, and a coridoor between them of x miles. Just brainstorming here. Speaking for myself, this isn't a feature I'd probably ever use. I like getting them in a lump sum and using various utils (EasyGPS, Watcher, USAPhotoMaps, ect.) to do whatever I want to them.
  7. Hmmm... Canned queries. Good idea I think. I always hated that 500 cache limit in Pocket Queries, but I also understand why there is a limit (server load). Just can't have it both ways. Groudspeak GPX files by state, update once daily (early moring as suggested above) sounds good. That would likely do truckloads to aliviate the bandwidth burden placed on GC.com by sites that crawl them to get stats and whatnot. Good thinking!
  8. quote:I'd click on anyone that had their own 'likeness' presented in the avatar. Hey now!
  9. <heh heh> That's pretty slick. You have inspired me. I blantantly ripped off your code, modified it, and did the same to my profile. Seriously, if you're offended I used your code I'll take it down.
  10. OTHER I have no opinion. Both side of the debate seem valid. Soooo... to each his own.
  11. quote:Originally posted by solohiker:How far was the hike? What kind of elevation gain? A gallon of water is not an unreasonable load. Do you carry mineral tablets? I have to guess you mean my cache? It's 1.5 miles round trip and about 700 feet of elevation gain. I drank all my water after about .8 miles. I didn't really mean is was a heavy load, just that I drank it all half way through the trip. I don't carry mineral tabs.
  12. You come to Arizona and do a 3.5+ terrain cache in 118 degree weather and then we'll talk about lazy caching. Around here you hit x/1 caches much of the year, or... 1. You die of heat stroke. 2. You simply don't cache. I have a 2/3.5 cache. I'm very healthy and able-bodied. But I went to do maintenance recently and almost passed out. I had 140oz water (70oz CamelBak with an extra 70oz bladder) and still ran out half way. I really don't think you thought much about your comment before making it.
  13. I used to carry a pistol. After awhile though I began to wonder why. It was one more dadgum thing to keep track of along with the other junk I have around me at any given time. Sooo... I put it in the nightstand and there it stays. In the years since I stopped carrying I haven't once been in a position where I needed it. Of course it can certainly be argued that it'll only take once, and I can agree with that. But I still see carrying as a pain in the a$$ that brings unwanted attention. Not to say that I'm for stricter gun laws. The fewer the better (gun laws and laws in general). I live in the wild west (aka Arizona) and love the thin gun laws. Even though I don't carry I like to know that I can if I want to without having to answer to anyone. IMO, anyone lobbying for stricter laws of ANY sort, gun or otherwise, ought to have their head examined.
  14. I'll echo the IrfanView votes. I love that proggie. Simple and to the point. Gotta love it.
  15. I have both a Legend (no compass) and a Vista (compass). In my experienced opinion the compass it WAY overrated. It's nice and all, but the money you pay for it totally cancels out any benefit. Get the Legend and a regular compass. You won't be sorry. <-- More experience.
  16. My pet-peeve about caching: Pet-peeves about caching. Not worth growing an ulcer over ya know. Shouldn't this thread have ended by now? Godwin's Law was invoked back on the first page.
  17. I've placed one cache. I go maintain it about every month. However I do keep my eye on the cache page logs. Depending on what cachers are saying about it I adjust my maintenance intervals accordingly. Sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. My advice to you is to just do the same. If you're getting visits very often you should lengthen your maintenance interval. But if you don't get any visits logged for an extended period of time you should go check it out. Many cachers don't log no-finds for whatever reason. Given that, the absence of finds for an inordinatly long period of time can indicate a problem.
  18. I compete with a good friend of mine to some degree. However as far as my count meaning anything in the greater communal sense, I couldn't care less. I'm not competetive against people I don't know well enough to grind them about it. I was thinking of going for a local record, but upon further investigation I don't think I have a chance in hell. That combined with not caring any about stats in the first place made it easy to toss that idea out the window.
  19. I can only think of one time I used the clue and it really helped. I've used the clues before but after reading them I nearly always find that I already knew what the clue is telling me. However as of this post I've only got 16 finds so you can take my comments for whatever you think they're worth. There ought to be more hours in the day. <sigh>
  20. Ooof. After reading this thread I have the sudden urge to stock a large cache with food and knives.
  21. I don't own either so I have no first hand knowledge, but based on my experience in these forums I think you'll probably find most people recommending the Platinum. Search the forums and you'll get a better idea. This has come up before I'm sure.
  22. They usually make them themselves. Get an HTML book and you can too. THIS is what I did with just some simple HTML and JavaScript. It's also my first stab at using XML. No idea if I did it right, but the page works so I must have done something right. Normally I'd have used ASP, but Cox won't let me run server-side scripts. I already know HTML, but I had to really bone up on JavaScript. My implemetation isn't very efficient. My normal forte is VBScript. But because it would run client-side I used JavaScript for more compatibility.
  23. I have both the Legend and the Vista. I still prefer my Legend. I fully recommend it. ******** I post the above all the time, but something I haven't posted before is that I've noticed that the Vista is slower than the Legend. For example, if I make a quick right turn the car, the Legend follows me right around it. The Vista takes a moment to get it's bearings. Also, while walking if I turn around and head in the opposite direction the Legned doesn't miss a beat. The Vista takes a couple seconds to realize what happened. Might be because the Vista has the additional processing overhead of the compass and barometer. That's just a guess. I don't know for sure why it is. I just know that I have consistantly observed these differences. Makes me like the Legend even more.
  24. quote:So yes, while common sense is a nice reasonable sentiment, I'm afraid it wouldn't hold up in court--and that matters more. I'm not a huge priciples guy, but on this I am. I refuse to be responsible for some other jacka$$es bad decisions. If that results in litigation, so be it. I'll tell the judge the same thing. Common sense still guides me. The threat of litigation is a non-issue.
  25. quote:Originally posted by nctreker:CSI A gruesome discovery in a cache just outside Las Vegas brings Grissom and his Etrex Vista onto the scene. Using fluorescein and UV light the CSI team is able to track a bloodtrail 15 miles through the desert to another cache. With the realization they have a multi-cache villian on their hands, the call goes out to collect DNA samples from every cache in the greater Las Vegas area. The entire CSI team sets up accounts and begins searching for ammo-boxes. Of course it becomes about the count with Warrick, Nick, Sara, and Greg each trying to get the most finds. In a final 24 hour caching flurry Nick records 130 finds and 15 DNF's. Unfortunately, McToys prove poor at retaining DNA so the team must resort to trickery and place their own cache in hopes of catching the villan. In a dramatic conclusion, the villian is caught leaving his unique signature item. He confesses finding a pocketknife in a previous cache caused him to snap. <heh heh> I always did consider CSI a sitcom. I laugh my a$$ off watching that show routinely. Thought I was alone.
