  1. Thanks all. I'm hunting for just the right thing to try, and these suggestions really help.
  2. Cool! I've got the current version of Garmin software loaded to my legend so I've 1000 waypoints! Ye-ah! Thanks for the advice and pointers. I'm leaving this Friday!
  3. I read something lately that said "Trade Equal or Trade Up". That's what I go by. I put in things I think I would like to find.
  4. I posted this in the other forum, but it might be more appropriate here - Hey All - I'm headed on a long road trip (from Massachusetts to Montana and back to Pennsylvania) and really want to do some caching along the way. I have EasyGPS, but I'm very overwhelmed with trying to figure out what caches to download. I'll be passing through probably 10 different states (making sure to see Devil's Tower in Wyoming). Any advice on how to figure out the best method for getting caches to my GPS. I have an eTrex Legend, so I can store like 500 of them, just where to start and how to figure it out? Help Please! Has anyone done this, or tried it? If you have any words of wisdom - please share. Thanks!

  6. I added a topic with the yahoo news story. Talk about grasping at straws. Moderator's Note: I merged the separate topic into this one. A single topic is sufficient.
  7. From Yahoo News - REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - Defense lawyer Mark Geragos will try to convince the judge in the Scott Peterson (news - web sites) double-murder case Wednesday that global positioning technology is inaccurate and unreliable. Legal experts said he faces an uphill battle, since the technology has been in use for many years by airline pilots and even hikers to pinpoint locations to within a few feet, using signals bounced off satellites. Geragos has said his client was tracked by Global Positioning System devices placed by authorities in vehicles he drove after his wife, Laci, disappeared on Christmas Eve in 2002. Geragos wants all the GPS tracking evidence excluded from the trial. "The GPS technology has not been generally accepted by the scientific community," he contended in court papers filed in October. Geragos faces a gag order and can't comment on what he hopes to gain by keeping the tracking evidence out of the trial. Likewise, prosecutors haven't said how they hope to use the evidence. If his claims about GPS unreliability fail to persuade Judge Alfred A. Delucchi at the Wednesday hearing, Geragos hopes to prove the device used to track Peterson was operated improperly by Modesto police. Police used GPS to track Peterson from Jan. 3 through April 22, 2003, when they arrested him near San Diego only days after the bodies of his wife and unborn son surfaced in San Francisco Bay. GPS was first developed for military use in 1978. In California, prosecutors who use GPS evidence in court are required to establish the device's reliability using properly qualified experts. Prosecutors not connected to the Peterson trial say this shouldn't pose a problem. "We all know from how much we use GPS now that it's quite accurate," said Mark Hutchins, senior deputy district attorney in Alameda County. "Airplanes use it. Everyone's got a GPS map thing in their car."
  8. For me, the comfort of a backpack is the key and I've found nothing as comfortable as a Jansport backpack with their "AirLift" technology straps. The straps are like this honeycomb-shaped gel-like stuff (I know, I know, how very technical of me) that really helps distribute pack weight and just feels very comfortable, even over long pack hikes. http://www.jansport.com/tech_airlift.php Best Regards, turtlex
  9. Hey All - Just thought I'd toss this out there it being a cold time here in Pennsylvania lately. I took my Garmin Legend out the other night when it was a balmy 9 (thats right...nine) degrees. I was out and about for approximately half an hour and my trusty Legend performed flawlessly. I was wondering if anyone ever had any problems with their GPS not working due to the cold? Best Regards, Keep Warm, turtlex
  10. Prime Suspect - Thanks for the nod to the iQue but they dont seem to think its rugged enough for the geocaching and hiking stuff.
  11. Fine People - I am looking for some advice on making a GPS purchase. Actually, its for a friend who wants to buy a handheld GPS unit. (I personally own a Garmin GPS Legend that I am just learning to use and I'm enjoying it alot.) This friend does a lot of travel for business, and needs often to find addresses, etc. The businesses are not always in big cities and often are larger facilities off the beaten trail, in the Southern region of the country. In addition to using the unit for directions, they also want to get into geocaching and do some hiking, etc. So, we've narrowed the list to the two Garmins (Legend and Vista) and likely a MapSource CD for cities details, etc. The Legend has 8mb of memory, and the Vista has 24mb (as well as the electronic compass). The Vista is about one hundred dollars more than the Legend. I've heard that the 8mb on the Legend is not sufficient to download detailed city/area maps. I thought I had read that someone had a problem loading WashingtonDC with just the 8mb. I have no expertise with the Vista to balance my recommendation with so I am coming to you all to ask you're advice. I'm not sure the extra 100 dollars will be a good outlaying of dough. Can they do fine with the Legend? In this situation, which would you think would be the better purchase, the Vista or the Legend? Um, for those wondering, no way the unit could be written off for tax purposes, drat!
  12. Desert_Warrior : Thanks so much for the quick response. Are there any other programs you might suggest (or that anyone else might suggest?)? Thanks!
  13. Greetings Good People - I am a rookie (major rookie) at geocaching and this turtle has a question. I am sorry if its been asked before, but several times I have seen a reference to "backing up your GPS" and I can't seem to locate that option in my GPS. I have a Garmin GPS Legend and I admit, I am still learning. Any advice or a pointer in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Best Regards, and Thanks In Advance, turtlex (placer of 1 travel bug and finder of 1 geocache, so far)
