  1. So, is this next after the cleaned up My Cache page? UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  2. What do Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms all have in common? . . . . . . . . . . . . . They're decomposing! UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  3. Yummy. Bummer about that wife thing... UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  4. I liked the idea, at first, of indicating the found vs not found by color on the nearest cache page. But then I realized that I tend to print black & white most of the time - so some sort of graphical indicator is still necessary. Oh - and someone recently said that the green indicator of the date of my find is plenty instead of a checkbox to show I found it. Well, honestly, the green doesn't look very green on my page. The font is too skinny such that the color isn't very bold. Plus, there is my above comment about printing in black and white. I really liked the idea of a big checkmark instead of an X in the box to indicate found. I really like the idea of something we can save in our profile that says how we like our search to come up when first clicked on from the My Profile page. Having to go to the New Search every time is a little silly and goes against what folks were trying to avoid by making this upgrade - there will be at least double the searches from me being sent to the servers. Respectfully submitted (Jeremy's doing things on this virtually free service (admit it, many non-members: you spend more on coffee in a day than the membership would cost you in a month) that I am incapable of doing. I am thankful that it is available to feed my addiction. Heartfelt thanks.), Hilary UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  5. I'm confused. How can there be a mother egg? Doesn't it at least have to hatch and be an adult bird or reptile or something before it can lay eggs? And now back to your regularly scheduled topic... UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  6. I'm a big fan of the Petzyl Zipka headlamp. It is essentially the same as the Tikka, but the straps are internal. So it holds in the hand very nicely, can strap to any size head or leg or arm in an instant, and pops into the backpack with no fuss. I got a friend one, loved it, bought myself one and then got one for another friend for her wedding shower! Great hands free light. 7. I guess to be more specific, I am looking for better maps (ones that have the streets as well as features in less densely populated areas) and the ability to put Geocaching coordinates directly on those maps. And have my Palm show the way to the coordinates - at least as close as can be expected in the car. Ideas? UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  8. I've spent a couple of days playing with my new Palm and a new Navman GPS attachment. First off, I don't plan to take these out on the trail. I bought them for getting me to the place to park. But I do have a gripe that although you can see high level lat/lon coordinates while playing on the PC, they don't take you to the seconds level you need for caching accuracy. Unless I'm missing something. The software that comes with the Navman is designed for finding street addresses. Which is really not useful for non-city caching. Next weekend we're going into a huge state park, for example, and there are no close addresses to draw from. I have not been able to determine if I can have it give me directions between personal markers. I don't think so, though. Does anyone know if the Navman GPS attachment works with other map softare besides the StreetFinder software that comes with it? Does anyone have working knowledge of software they have used with the Navman GPS on their Palm devices? I'd hate to think this new toy was just about useless for caching needs. I don't even see most rivers on this device, which would make pretty useful points of reference on a map. Any insights and directly related personal experiences anyone can share would be greatly appreciated. UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  9. We have about a thousand (give or take 900) micro micros in the area thanks to Electric Shavers. They tend to use Post-It note pads. They roll up well into film canisters and would lie flat in your Altoids can. UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  10. quote:Originally posted by Dave_W6DPS:I turned it on when I got my Venture, and haven't turned it off since. The slower updates aren't a problem for me either, since I walk kind of slowly... Actually, once I get to within 20 to 25 feetof a cache I tend to put the GPSr in my pocket and just look. Dave_W6DPS My two cents worth, refunds available on request. (US funds only) Ditto, even down to the Venture! I turned it on when I first got the device and didn't understand the technology enough to know whether that was good or not. I've left it on ever since. UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  11. My friend and I have a one bug per person rule. If we're caching together, we may take two. We have a bug resort where we try to keep three or more bugs in it at a time. I thought it was kind of rude when someone grabbed a few (we started with 8). But none of this came from any Official Geocaching Guidelines. 12. I'm in Centerville, a suburb of Dayton. Caching since March 2003. Will proudly find my 50th cache this weekend! Originally hail from Federal Way, Washington. Had a five year stint in Cleveland, as well. UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  13. I'm rather late to post to this, but I am a female, I cache with my female friend, ZooCacher, and another female friend of ours, HikerDeb, originally introduced us to it. On my first caching expedition, there were three women and one man. For the trip I'm leading this weekend, when I shall find my 50th cache, we have so far a group of five ladies and one gentleman. Oddly enough, ZooCacher and I tend to assume male on the local cachers whose logs we see unless we can determine otherwise. We don't see it as a girl sport, but as we're also rock climbers, we're not typical girl sport participants. I have brown hair and use a Garmin eTrex Venture, which I bought for myself within days of my first geocaching expedition. UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)

  15. One of the reasons I said Everyone is that a lot of caches have multiple owners - but to my knowledge, only one person gets official recognition of that. The co-owners of our ZooCache, who provided materials and labor to our cache, wouldn't get the same priviledges as I, the official owner, would get. In the case of an owner-only view of watchers. 16. I have a feeling the most caches in a day tallies may be rising with this innovation... http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=573&e=16&u=/nm/shoppers_dc UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  17. I bet the most finds in a day tally will rise quickly with this... Frustrated Shoppers Turn to GPS UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  18. A blue gekko bottle opening keychain in recognition of my rock climbing hobby. One office desk key. One mailbox key. Two keys to my house - the one I originally had and the one my ex boyfriend gave back to me. UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  19. A cache went out here in Dayton, OH shortly after I started geocaching. It was filled with more than a dozen CDs. We were pretty excited to visit, but very few others have done so. And most have TN/LN. I guess we have a good caching community that only trades even or up and most don't want to trade something as (relatively) expensive as a CD. We expected to see a lot of visits to this cache, but it hasn't happened. UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  20. I'm on my 2nd! Currently in a 2002 Jetta GLX with the newer VR6. Sold my 2000 Passat GLX 4Motion last year about this time. The Jetta is full of caching stuff - from hiking boots to trinkets. Climbing stuff, too. Rope, shoes, harness... Ready for anything. Great little car. UPSCWRU (University of Puget Sound, Case Western Reserve University)
  21. I was just curious - has anyone heard of anyplace on this site where people contact others for places to stay so that they can geocache an area? I'd like to go to neighboring states and get a bunch of caches, but it would be great to have a fellow geocacher to stay with. I'd be willing to offer my extra room and bathroom periodically for similar purposes. I've heard of people who trade houses for vacations (these were transAtlantic trades). I was thinking of something like that for cachers. UPSCWRU = University of Puget Sound, Case Western University)
  22. Okay, I've only found 14 thus far, but the most exciting find was Templeton's Treasure (I think that's the name) in Ohio. The cache itself is a large rubber rat with a hole in it's belly for the microcache. It was placed under the roots of a fallen tree, and all I saw was a little ear and some hair. I made my friend reach in to what I thought was probably the cache... I did a few little squeamish dances... UPSCWRU = University of Puget Sound, Case Western University)
