  1. THESE drop in's are the best you can get. A little expensive but worth it. I've been using them for a few years now and have had no problems with then Gene has excellent customer service if you ever need it.
  2. Don't know who told you that, but they are full of it. We have a Verizon Droid X and use the Groundspeak app and it works fine. After you calibrate the compass, it is just as accurate as a regular GPSr. We use it when we pull into rest stops as it is a quick, no fuss, no muss setup. We wouldn't use a smart phone for heavy caching as it is pretty battery intensive.
  3. No need for a macro. If you are using GSAK, when you go download the waypoints to the GPSr, go to GPS, select send waypoints and in the drop down menu go to Waypoint Name and change it from %code to %smart. In the maximum characters block put in the number of letters you want to see. I suggest using 15 - 20.
  4. When you absolutely, positively, have to find the cache, a 60CSX.
  5. Yes, you want to buy a dedicated GPSr if you are going to do some serious caching. The battery life of a phone just can't cut it. We use the phone for spur of the moment caching such as highway rest stops. If you are going to start caching at 10 in the morning and stop at 4 in the afternoon, the phone can't do it without a charge. Our 60CSx can go a couple of 12 hour days with rechargeable Enloops.
  6. I think you could find a better deal. Look for a 60CSx here in the forums for the same price and that should include maps.
  7. Don't fool with the macros, just load from GSAK like in my first post. The cache info is in the geocaches folder on the Nuvi and nothing goes into favorites.
  8. What do you get when you load directly from GSAK? I see that GSAK supports the 1490 and a POI loader or macro shouldn't be needed
  9. Here is the way I do it. Hook Nuvi 500 to computer and let the puter recognize it as a new drive. You will see the green line moving on the Nuvi Go to "My Computer" on your computer and look for the Nuvi drive and open it. Look the a folder called "Garmin" and open it. You will see another folder "Archive" and files "current.gpx", "geocaches.gpx", and "position.gpx". Delete those 3 files and then open the "Archive" folder where you will delete the ".gpx" file in it. Now close everything up as all the files are gone. Now open up GSAK and do whatever you want to do with the listings like delete the archived and those that haven't been found in the last 4 logs. In GSAK go to "GPS" and drop the menu to setup. Select "Garmin" and then further down select the "Nuvi 500" and check "OK". Now go back to GPS and select "send waypoints". You are now finished. No need to fool with a POI loader or any macro. Juast remember that you have to change the settings in the "GPS" dropdown menu before you load your hand held unit.
  10. If I were you, I would keep the CSx until it died and then worry about replacement.( How do you wear out a GPS?) I would dump the PDA and go with a iPod Touch to keep all your data on. This is what we are doing and so far it works well. Love the CSx and not ready to fool around with the new gadgets.
  11. Take a look HERE There is also some more good info.
  12. We tried for this one GC1F31G in Paducah,KY and came up empty. Been there since 8-08 and has 27 finds and 122 DNF's Some of the logs were rather nasty in the comments and were removed.
  13. 500 feet before you hit the ditch! Wow, how fast were you going? We have done the range and don't see how you could have run in the ditch if you were paying attention. Anyway, buck up and eat the 500 loss. Just consider it an expensive lesson.
  14. If in the desert, it could be behind a bush or in a pile of rocks. In town, probably in a film canister under a lamp post skirt.
  15. We have one in a clam shell hidden amongst a few oyster shells.
  16. Heck, there are days when we can't any map at all. Most frustrating.
  17. Our hamster has been waiting all year to get back in action.
  18. If you are using the POI loader, that is the way it works. Use GSAK and upload your caches that way.
  19. Yep, had the same thing happen. Posting of a FTF before the published date. I was told I was crazy and didn't know what I was looking at and that it couldn't happen.
  20. In GSAK, go to GPS and then to setup. Select your GPS model from the list and then send data to your unit.
  21. We use a Nuvi 500. It is easy to use with GSAK, you can load everything on the unit, cache info, past logs, hints, and you don't need the Garmin POI loader. You can do your log and then all you have to do is upload to your field notes and complete the entry. The only thing I don't like about the 500 is the keyboard, it is not the standard QUERTY but a straight ABCD...type of thing. That really sucks if you want to do a complete log before uploading. You might want to check out the 550 model, there is some difference in maps. We got ours from Amazon.
