  1. No problem with this idea at all..... If it's what you want then go for it. No one is obliged to pick up a TB. Like it or let it lie - how hard is that? Personally, I wanna be cremated and scattered anywhere, by someone who will not tell anyone else where it happened. What does creep me out is a place becoming a pilgrimage point for family on down the line. I do not want to put the pressure on my kids of having to feel that they must make a regular visit to where I am left after the event. Being a (good?) memory is all I aim at in that regard.
  2. Hmmmmm..... Well, brings back a memory from the way-back..... When I was a lot younger I was working in a local architects office. One of the draughtsmen brought in a set of 'L' rods. They were like coathanger wire and they had brass handle pieces that they could rotate freely in. We were trying them out and who should walk in but the boss. Rather than make comments he showed a lot of interest. So, after we had all had a go he tried them too. The result was that three of us, out of seven, got a 'hit' on a certain location. We moved to the next office and the same three got a hit there too. The 'hits' didn't actually seem to relate to anything however so we soon forgot the whole thing. It must have been about six months after that when the boss came in and told us that he was looking to build an extension to the office and when he was checking out the plans of the building (a converted OLD house) he had found that there was an abandoned drainage pipe exactly on the line where we had found the 'hits' with the dowsing rods. Still, you can think what you want to I suppose but for cache hunting, I dunno!
  3. I did it - standing up in a hammock - can you?
  4. Magnetic paint??? The sensors in the black helicopters can see straight through that stuff you know. You need to keep wearing the foil hat and underwear as well, to be safe.
  5. Almost certainly a ground loop. The way around it would be to disconnect the signal return at one end thus leaving the return path to flow through the PS ground. Now, that is the theory and the chances that you can get at the necessary core in your cable are slight. There are other ways to work on this but all require access to the cable cores. NOT a fun thing to do on these small multicore cables. I would accept that I have to use batteries and get a bundle of rechargables for the GPS.....
  6. Yeah, what they said..... And, until a person actually JOINS the site, it should be 50 cents for every cache page downloaded too..... Am I serious about this? You decide.....
  7. Warcraft, warcraft, warcraft, warcraft.....
  8. Using a 'worse' example as justification for something is totally unacceptable. It is neither legitimate reasoning nor is it a legitimate excuse.
  9. Good point there - if it is clearly stated that a missing owner can come along at any time and re-claim a cache, would you still be willing to adopt it?
  10. This web site tells us, correctly, that they are a listing site, not the caching authority for the planet. With that in mind they have no power beyond stating what they are willing to list. Thus we are at a point where one persons morality can be at odds with that of another. Yeah, we all know that there are other listing sites and we also know that they vary in the types and specifics of what they will list. But the mere fact that they exist makes this a difficult question to discuss. Could they already be in the process of assigning adoption rights? Sometimes, if a cache is obviously not being maintained then discussions can start on adoption but remember, the problem that this site has is that they are working on the word of others as regards re-assigning ownership of something that, to a degree at least, is the property of someone else. Or is it? What is the legal standpoint when one places a container full of small items under a tree and walks away? Who really owns it? Now we are at a point where we can ask if it is legally wrong when someone 'finds' a cache and takes it home. So, finally, my question is, does ANYONE have the authority to remove a cache without the permission of the owner? (this excludes any consideration, at this point, of the status of the agents of the authority over the land - rangers, police, what ever)
  11. 58 goin' on 22 - what's it to ya? HUH? An' Bugsie is a little less, 55
  12. This is a sad thing to happen, I know, been there had that happen..... It's a case of 'I get something for free - I don't give a toss what it costs you, you are silly enough to put this stuff out there so you get what you deserve. But I get something for free!' There will always be people like that. Sorry about your experience, it's a total downer. As I said, been there, done that but in the end it does make you determined to win out in the end.
  13. Yes it is and to shy away from policing this aspect of it in this most basic and simple way, by allowing a reporting system, is naive, simplistic and enabling. Perhaps a pinned topic in the garage sale area making it plain that problems will be reported would even be enough to cut down on such incidents.....
  14. Looks good. Please may I have it? Thank you for the chance to ask for it.
  15. So why not post that feedback in the Garage Sale Thread you used to initiate the trade in the first place? This, of course, assumes that you set the trade up in the forums and not through email. Oh yes, absolutely. The trading and reporting have to be kept together if it is going to work. Further, as someone pointed out before, this is not eBay. There is no need for stacks of "WOW, this person is a great trader" kind of stuff. edited coz I didn't run the spool chucker
  16. If trading is permitted and enabled then comment (feedback) on the result is a 'must have' too. Without it a single 'bad apple' could sell stuff to the entire buying geo-public with no one knowing it was going on! Both or neither..... Sure, mod the hell out of it but it needs to be there as a safeguard. Or, shut down the facility completely.
  17. Sure it is - isn't that what the off topic thread is for? No, the Off Topic forum is for topics that have nothing to do with geocaching. Riding my mountain bike to caches is just as much about caching as my trip to China. It's actually more related to geocaching than "Can I use my GPS on an airplane?" or "Another covered bridge was burnt" yet no one complains about those topics. We have all seen those posts that go: "Yadda. "Yadda yadda. "Yadda. "Yadda yadda yadda. "Oh yeah, and by the way geocaching. (Just to stay on topic)" This is simply one of these, and like GJ above, I have to doubt whether this would have lasted past the first post, or at least the first reply, if a proletarian had posted it. Looks like a patricians forum to me.
  18. If I get this, there will come a time when everything will have been said and can be referenced so that forums will not be needed. Ah, the sum of all human knowledge. Personally, I am willing to have someone post anything of even remote relevance because even if it was posted last week it may well trigger a thought for me simply by being expressed in a slightly different way. In the event that a particular thread is not holding my interest I will skip over it. That is a natural turn of events and is a sort of easily and automatically applied filter. This is a hobby and one of the things about hobbies is that people like to discuss their hobbies over and over - it's part of the whole experience, part of the immersion. Does it matter if something is discussed a couple of times in the same month? There are essentially three types of post to a thread. Those are facts and opinions and questions. If a forum topic were in the form of a database and there were constructions that could make searching close to foolproof for all, then a single mention would be enough. But then we would not be looking at a forum anymore, it would be a knowledge base. Surely a forum is a place to come and chat and to express an opinion. If a question is asked in this environment then it can be seen as an expression of the faith that the person asking holds on the opinions and/or knowledge of other members of the forum. Read Carleenp's contribution above. That is a great attitude to the whole subject. Live and let live.
  19. Sure it is - isn't that what the off topic thread is for?
  20. He did not say that he was trying to convert others to a point of view, but rather expressing a personal opinion. The facts to support his opinion are listed on the HRC website which he referenced for anyone interested in further details. Two things, firstly, I can see that he may not have been trying to convert others - that's why I said "If" - the very first word in the part of my post that you quoted. Secondly, I can see that I need to be a little clearer in how I express myself - I am sorry for the confusion. I was taking issue with the OP's 3rd point, not his second. If that is covered in the HRC site then I missed it and I apologize.
  21. I don't know that marking anything as a personal opinion makes it any less ouchy. You have to assume anything anyone says is, at least to some extent, a personal opinion. If you said, "in my personal opinion weasels are bad-tempered stinky rat-eating ginks" the fact that you've labeled it your personal opinion doesn't lessen the insult. (And I'll get you for that!). Politics and religion. There's a reason Mama told you not to bring them up at the dinner table. Well, you are kinda right, yeah. (reluctant admission - *S*) However, I stand by what I said even if I do have to slightly change the reasoning behind saying it. There is a degree of crippling in ones ability to say what is intended in a monitored forum like this. So much can, and will, be taken as a personal attack. I still contend that the original post was wrong in its points of observation and ridiculous in it's content. If the OP wishes to covert others to a point of view then the post must be logical, and should back up claimed 'facts'..... I am not carrying a torch for religion but I hate to see anything that has a core of goodness being put down in such a puerile and ill-thought out manner.
  22. Is it possible to have an unbiased personal opinion? Yeah! If you are ME! No, you are right. That was a badly stated point right there. I should have possibly said 'extremist'.....
  23. Why are so many otherwise intelligent and reasonably articulate people continuing to argue the point in a thread that started out with a total and completely null set of statements and concepts? The SA contest may be a good idea or not, depends where you are standing to look at it. However, it is NOT a bad idea. You may have a bad attitude to it but as long as no one is being forced to participate then the worst it can be is 'not a good idea' and even then, only for YOU. The thing that amazes me is that so much has grown out of a set of statements that the OP actually said were only a personal opinion. They were biased and poorly thought out but still admitted to be personal opinions only. I stand by my earlier comments.
  24. I'm not putting MY nickname and avatar anywhere on a thread like this! This post has been edited by bug and snake on Apr 29 2005 to say "Oh poo-poos, I think I just did"
