1. This is an interesting idea. Where do we submit the photo's? Would people in the photo's be accepted or just the areas surrouding a cache? As to a charity-- St. Jude's children hospital might be a good choice. The Sierra Club might be a little to *green* to be accepted by all...just a tad better than the NPS to some. Everyone wants to help sick children. When you let us know about the photo's, we will submit a couple... Thank you for this chance. 2. quote:Originally posted by Tsegi Mike and Desert Viking:I like both. We've done more caches. They can be done on the spur of the moment. Benchmarks are more challenging. As others have noted, the landmarks change. I'm getting into the historical aspect of benchmarks. I've found some from a series of crosses seen from the air for the military's use in the Vietnam war era http://img.Groundspeak.com/benchmark/lg/39223_200.jpg http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.asp?PID=CZ2333. At some point, I'm going to look for a series of benchmarks from several old airports and military bases that no longer exist in Arizona. I think a few of those benchmarks may still exist. It brings me back to my archaeology roots in a way. I hope to look for the 100 year old rock cairns that another team near Page has been finding.(I'm drawing a blank on the team name, something about rockhounds.) If only all of our benchmark finds would count. Only 1 in 4 benchmarks are in the database. ************* Till a voice, as bad as Conscience, rang interminable changes On one everlasting Whisper day and night repeated -- so: "Something hidden. Rudyard Kipling , The Explorer 1898 You must be getting old if you can't remember the name of a couple of old farts. By the way the cairns are 132 yrs old. We hunt benchmarks because there are many more of them than caches in our area. ******************************************************* Everybody is entitled to my opinion - the ornery oldfart
3. Sorry Downy288, but you can't have Utah Admin. He has been WAY TO GOOD to us to let him go. Thanks Utah Admin!! 2oldfarts ******************************************************* Everybody is entitled to my opinion - the ornery oldfart
4. The page "my cache page" is all that we need. Scroll down & it shows caches found by you in sequence & one little click will let you know who has found it after you. 8. What we have noticed with our caches is, if the cache started with nice items then 'most' people will trade pretty even. We have one cache that started with mostly cheap items and it has stayed that way. The amount in that cache has stayed about the same as when it was placed. The biggest factor appears to be location. In town will degrade quite a bit faster than those out in the 'countryside' where it takes some effort to get to the cache. Another factor appears to be the cache page; If we let the people know that there are nice items in the cache then they tend to trade a bit fairer. We even had one log where the people said they took nothing because they didn't have anything nice enough(with them)to trade. That tells me some people just don't take anything nice along for trading. They expect the cheap stuff. So if we (cache placers) start stocking our caches with some nice items maybe more people will start bringing nice trade stock with them. Then again the cheap bast**ds will always trade for the nice items. John ******************************************************* Everybody is entitled to my opinion - the ornery oldfart

12. quote:Originally posted by Criminal: I don’t consider myself “pro-religion” at all. The fact is that a cacher removed an item that cannot be considered offensive or dangerous. Porn would be considered offensive and guns, bullets, or fireworks would be considered dangerous. Beyond that, if it worries you, send the cache owner an email. Question: If the cache owner placed that material, would your opinion be the same? Additionally, I saw nothing that said the material were “tracts” or even paper at all. The “religious propaganda” could have been anything, Buddha figurine, beads, cross, St Christopher medal, or what have you. It could have even been Harry Potter material as mentioned above. The best way to handle it is to MYO dadgum B. http://fp1.centurytel.net/Criminal_Page/

AMEN BROTHER ******************************************************* Everybody is entitled to my opinion - the ornery oldfart
13. Hey, I thought the idea behind GEOCACHING is if you take something out of a cache, you place something into the cache, period. This means even if something is offensive..like food, a knife, beer, or....pamphlets, remove it BUT & I stress BUT, leave something in it's place. Do not punish the cache owner by reducing the cache content! Shirley of 2oldfarts ******************************************************* Everybody is entitled to my opinion - the ornery oldfart
14. Due to the number of cachers who do not log on-line (only in the cache logbook) it wouldn't take very long for some cache contents to be way off. Good Idea, but probably wouldn't work. 15. I think there are 3 that just jump out & say vote for me, in order of jumping..... 1. Team Lightfoot 2. The Weasel 3. Cacherunner Thank you for another fun thread & the time you will take to do this...I will be waiting for your post with the pictures of the completed rocks.....
16. My question is, if you have a pen-pal on-line and send him e-mail messages regularly and then get bent out of shape about something, can you make him return and/or delete all those messages you freely sent him/her? 17. quote:Originally posted by Sabaharr:Finally someone else has picked up on my idea (See the Toy Story series of caches in Louisiana that I placed last year). I was going to do 8 in the series also but stopped with 4 because a very inconsiderate cacher started posting the codes on his web site. I hope you have better luck with it than I did. By the way, I called it a Progressive Series. If interested you can check out my MICRO MANIA series too. I called it a Wagon Wheel series because you could go to one location to get the coordinates to 5 caches, all eminating from that one spot like the spokes of a wheel. It took some convincing to get it approved because the original coordinates were all so close together for these 5 multi minis. Good luck with it. Life is like being on a dog sled team. If you are not the lead dog the view is always the same. Complacancy is feeding a tiger steaks while waiting for him to become a vegitarian. We set all 8 as a multi-cache so hopefully we won't have the same problem of someone giving out the coordinates on their website. The wagon wheel sounds intriguing. Okay for us to try our hands at it? The tick season is bad out here Dx, they only grow to be 5 or 6 feet & they're only about 2 inches in diameter, but the make a strange buzzing noise when disturbed. 18. After reading the replies to our thread New cache alert we thought it would be a good idea to have a special link in the forums just for ‘Better than average’ caches. This link would be for those who put a lot of effort into placing a cache and would like someplace to CROW about how well they did. It would also be for those who have found a cache that they felt was exceptional and why others may want to take the time to go and find it. We would suggest that when a thread is opened the name of the cache and the state it is located in would be the name of the thread. The reasoning for this is so when someone is planning a vacation they won’t have to start a thread in the general area asking for caches to find at their destinations. This link would allow them to find the better than average quality caches in that area. When cachers find a truly good cache they can post it on the cache page and tell a few friends face to face only. This link would allow them to share their enthusiasm with other cachers and also have a link without the flaming. It would promote the best of Geocaching. We have a couple in mind that we think are terrific and think others would definitely enjoy. John & Shirley of the 2oldfarts

20. quote:Originally posted by Dan Edwards:Very interesting. At first I was going to agree that it probably should have been posted in a local forum, but considering the cool stuff involved, I think this one qualifies to be kicked up a level. I am very tempted to do this one and I am a state away and don't own a 4 wheel drive. Dan A = A A high-clearance vechicle is definitely required but a 4X4 is not required for the first or second chevron....but most of the others do require a 4X4 or quad or even a dirt bike. Maybe you could consider renting a quad & trailer or ramp it into the back of a pickup as many of the people do around here. We used our 4X4 Dodge Quadcab with me holding on tightly in a couple spots! Hope you can lock at least a few chevrons...we do not require you do all of the stages to log it as a find, we just ask you tell us how many chevrons you locked in so we are up-dated as to the ones we might need to restock. Thank you for the kind words....Happy caching! Shirley of 2oldfarts
21. Ooooohhh....to bad you guys think it's too far away...we had tons of fun buying all the first finder's items & hiding all the stages! I hope someone can find the time to come to our beautiful area & get some Star Gate logo items! Don't forget your sunglasses Shirley of 2oldfarts
22. Your unit measures linear distance from point A to point B. If there is a rapid change in elevation along the way it will only see the distance in 2 dimensions. If the change in elevation is say 1500 feet up one side and 2000 feet down the other side of a mesa the GPSr will only read the distance between start and finish and think you went through the mesa instead of over it. 23. I know I don't have Brian Snat approval to post this here, but I did say I would post when it was approved. It has been approved, so fire-up those 4x4's and get ready to see some beautiful country. Woodster, you may wish to take a vacation to do some serious 4-wheeling. Just click on the link. 24. quote:Originally posted by BeachBum22: I don't know how it got started there, because I don't see much commercial value in pictures of people holding ammo cans in the woods. On the other hand, there may be some commercial value to a large database of documented and photographed benchmarks. I've played the game of 'I make it you sell it before', so in the event that ever does happen here, I don't want to play. Not that it will, but you never know.... Just a suggestion for downloading pictures to the site... Use one of the photoshop programs and put you name in block out-line type letters across the picture before you send it. Use a nice contrasting color with letters large enough to see through. This would negate any resell value of the picture.
