If any of you get the chance to meet Joe or Southpaw you will find that you have met two really nifty guys. I think I might have actually gotten some folks a little more interested in benchmarking at the event yesterday As I was telling Joe at the event, I'm trying to hide caches that help introduce people to benchmarks. Here's one I did from last year: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=52280 and here's one that just got approved this morning: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=98317 A coworker of mine, has done a similar thing with this cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=8782c065-67a6-4f74-9007-8d86b55d5beb I really do enjoy benchmarks and through geocaching I have met some of the nicest people that share similar interests. Ain't the internet grand? Happy hunting! P.S. Joe... I tore up the ticket, so you're a free man Jeff http://www.StarsFellOnAlabama.com http://www.NotAChance.com If you hide it, they will come.... We too have tried to introduce other cachers to the fun of benchmarks with a couple of our own caches. This cache Hoo Doos you have to step over the benchmark in order to get through the people gate to get to the cache. For this cache Lady we set the cache container on one of the reference marks of the triangulation station. Most people have remarked on the benchmark at 'Hoo Doos' but not 'Lady'. Maybe they just don't move the cache container at Lady. We have gotten some positive feedback from Hoo Doos though. 2. quote:Originally posted by McKenzie Clan:If you reallt want to check it out, go find a local Benchmark. Geocaches are placed by humans with the same type of devices as you, therefore margin of error is normal. Benchmarks are placed by the government, and land surveyors, and would me more accurate. That being said, every device has a margin of error, so that is normal. Scott Before relying on a benchmark check the benchmark page to see if the location is scaled (not very accurate) or adjusted (very accurate). We have found scaled benchmark as far as a tenth of a mile away from the given coordinates. 6. Jeremy, we have been to other sites that change the look of the cursor as soon as you get to their web page. I do not know if you could do this for Geocaching.com of not, but if it could even be just on the forums, it might be really fun. It could be changed into....say a FROG with his tongue stuck out catching a 'bug' or something else pertaining to Geocaching. A lot of us ladies & kids would really enjoy things like this! Thank you for your time. ~Shirley of 2oldfarts~ **************************************

  8. I just had a thought!! Wow, most of the time I do not think...just do... Anyway, Is there any way you could change the cursor to look like a black triangle with an 'N' in the center, like on our Meridian Platinum or some other way cool item depicting geo-caching? I have been to sites where the cursor changes just while onsite. ~Shirley of 2oldfarts~

  10. I went back today and did the 90 degree turn and walked to where it intersected with other lines. I turned on the metal detector and made three sweeps with it and it sounded off. cleared the sand and there was E-80 just waiting to get it's picture taken. If I did this correctly it should show the N/S ridge behind the mark. Thanks for your help. 12. The female of 2oldfarts (me) has a blast using the track up (the neat little map) on our Meridian Platinum while the male of 2oldfarts drives us to a good parking area as close to the cache as possible. Then I let my hubby play with it, He likes to switch back & forth between the track up & the distance/compass screens. This allows me to concentrate on looking around for the cache---but don't tell him that. ~Shirley of 2oldfarts~ ******************************************************* It's hard to remember that your primary objective is to drain the swamp, when you're up to your a$$ in alligators.
  13. Thank you for your responses. I guess the question should have been ''How far do you extend the centerline of the road before making the 90 degree turn and measuring the required distance?''. The other indicators are there but it's going to take a metal detector to find the mark so knowing when to make the 90 degree turn will really help out. 17. I tried to locate a benchmark today Gp0103. The coordinates are scaled not adjusted. I was reading the directions and they say the mark is 234 feet southeast of the extended center of a paved road leading southwest. I could find the road with no problems, and it is a ''T'' intersection with the main highway. My question is ''Where do you start the measurement of 234 feet from?'' How far do you extend the center of that road before you make your measurement? Any help would be appreciated. Thank You, John of 2oldfarts ******************************************************* It's hard to remember that your primary objective is to drain the swamp, when you're up to your a$$ in alligators.

  21. By lame do you mean that the initial contents of the cache were of sub-quality (broken McToys?) or that the cache was too easy to get to and find? Or maybe that it was hidden in a poor area, such as an unauthorized landfill? Anyways, if one of my caches goes lame, just shoot it and put it out of it's misery! 22. I'm confused now. Do you mean to say that if the cache owner knows you're watching his cache, that takes all the fun out of it? Kind of like it's no fun to spy on someone when they know you're looking? Why should I expect privacy just to watch a cache? I can't think of any reason the owner of the cache shouldn't know 2oldfarts is watching his cache, unless of course he doesn't want ME to find it. The use is the same as stated before.....enjoyment of the game! ******************************************************* It's hard to remember that your primary objective is to drain the swamp, when you're up to your a$$ in alligators.

  24. In answer to your questions I would suggest get a can of spray paint that matches the freeway abutment. 2) is a not found/destroyed.I would log it not found myself since there is no way to know which disk had been there. 3) is also a not found. We have some marks here that are under pavement. Although there is an access hatch for them. It is possible that the mark is still there, not very likely though. Hope this helps. 25. quote:Originally posted by Renegade Knight:Cat's out of the bag. Now people can quit speculating. The entire urchin experiment had mixed results. The urchin logo giving permission solved the problem but might take the fun out of it for most. The Urchin saga was a geocaching experiment done by geocachers in order to try to grow the sport. These creative variations need to happen. Some will turn south. If they do fess up, appologize and move on. Every now and then someone will hit a home run and the sport will be better off for it. I offer this for your edification. Team caches, that must be placed by teams of 2 or more Geocaching accounts and can only be logged by teams of 2 or more Geocaching accounts. For example team RK & canadazuuk get together and place cache 'team 1'. then team 2oldfarts & woodster get together and search for cache 'team 1'. Only by working in teams can a find be logged. If woodster goes out on his own and finds the cache and the oldfarts go out on their own and find the cache, it will not count. Something for the Geocaching community to consider to get more cachers playing together.
