  1. I've also gone ahead and ordered this setup. I can't wait to try paperless with this. I'm tired of juggling a GPS and a Palm, not to mention I've lost the RS232 cable to my eTrex Summit during my last move. Hopefully this will clean it all up for me!
  2. Any word from the owner? -T
  3. Well, after many calls to Indi... I mean, tech support, and having them send me a new cradle, they finally believe me that the issue is with the Zire 71 itself and not with the cradle, or the computer. So, I bought the Zire on the 13th, today is the 21st and I just dropped off the FedEx (on MY nickle!) to send back the Zire that I've never gotten to use. The "best" suggestion they made: "Oh, you are only running Windows XP Service Pack 1, you need to upgrade to 1a or 1b". *sigh* -T P.S. SP1a was the post-Sun lawsuit release that removes microsoft VM java. It's actually a downgrade as sun java runs slow as molasses.
  4. Great! Thanks for the quick response! This is a really popular cache/area and I'd hate to see it go away. -T
  5. Oops. Made a new topic on this, should have posted here: Hi, I'm posting a message in case anyone is familiar with the owners of Garrison Hill Camera Cache. It's in rough shape, and the owner hasn't visited the web site for about a year. I posted a Should be archived note... but I know this is a popular cache, and has been around for a while (just turned 3!)... E-mails to the owner are bouncing, unfortunately. -T P.S. I am willing to adopt it! I live 2 minutes away.
  6. Any of you Zire 71 folks have probelms with HotSyncing? I just got mine, and after 4 hours of tech support, and some of the most inane suggestions from them, I finally convinced them that my cradle is dead, and they are sending me a new one... but it's gonna take 7-10 days!!! And I was hoping to be paperless for this beautiful Saturday coming up! -T
  7. I am thinking the pilots had to fly around the crowded airspace of some cities, or they were sharing some Boone's Farm.... Air traffic routes zigzag across the country. Very rarely do planes get a "direct". Another story from my brother's sector. EDIT: After a brief moment of consideration, I removed this good story, as it involves certain privledged flights and the last thing I need is a gov't agency banging down my door. Suffice it to say in order to get a direct, you need a good reason, either VIP or emergency is the general rule. Sometimes, if the area is slow, you might get one, or if a controller needs to get you out of the way. -T
  8. Actually, it was kinda neat to see my tracklines overlap as the plane was in a holding pattern. We flew the same oval 3 or 4 times! My brother (Air Trafic Controller) shared this with me: A plane had circled the airport twice due to congestion. Pilot radios in request to land... again. Controller responds 'negative' and issues command to circle again. Pilot says "Son, do you realize it costs $1000 every time I turn this plane around?" Controller responds, "Roger. Give me $2000 worth." -T
  9. Had to check with my brother, since he is a controller with the FAA. He referred me to the following document. http://techreports.larc.nasa.gov/ltrs/PDF/...01-cr210866.pdf His quote was: "For once they made a rule before they lost a plane, in contradiction to their "normal" policy of losing a plane before making a rule" -T
  10. Nice try, but if this was real, the "um" word would've popped up much more often. geez um every um body um is um a um critic um. Who do you thik this was, Ted Kennedy??? Oh wait, he's Uhhhh... -Um... T
  11. Well, there have been a couple of times that I've gone to hide a cache, and shyed away at the last moment, for fear that the site isn't "good enough" or the swag is "too chearp". Mostly from reading posts like these. How about posting your ideas of what makes a good cache? Feel free to elaborate! -T
  12. This conversation is "real" and took place on March 15, 2004 between an Onstar subscriber and an Onstar agent. Onstar: This is Onstar. My name is Hank. How can I be of assistance? Team Muggle: Hello are you there? OS: Yes, this is Onstar, How can we help? TM: Well, I've been searching for this cache. I've never logged a DNF, and I can't bring myself to give in and go home. Plus my battery is dead so my location is unknown. <long pause> OS: Um, ok, so I'm showing you... um, in the middle of a lake TM: I can explain. I was out driving on the ice over a free flowing river, just following where the needle went. But I didn't want to venture into the open water; it looks cold. And wet. OS: So where are you now? TM: I don't know. Battery went dead. OS: Are you off the ice? TM: No, I'm floating on it. OS: OK. So, what exactly were you doing on the ice in the middle of a thaw. TM: I told you, I was looking for "Don't Break the Ice" cache. It looked like a straight shot from the road to a penninsula on the river, so I took the turn . Unfortunately, the ice broke on my way and now I'm drifting. OS: A cache... TM: You're kidding! You've never heard of Geocaching. Well, let me explain... OS: Would you like me to alert EMS for you? TM: Would it count as a DNF? OS: How about a DOA? TM: NO! Wait! I'm getting close to the "I Am A Rock Cache". It must be on that island right there. OS: Sir, I thought your battery was dead... TM: No, no. I must have turned it off trying to turn the backlight on. OS, So... um... EMS... TM: GREAT THINKING! Send EMS to find the other cache for me, so I won't have to log the DNF. Then pick me up at "I'm A Rock". OS: Sir, I don't think... TM: Gotta go, if I'm gonna make the island. Thank you! *SPLASH* OS: Sir? Um. Thank you for calling Onstar. I have sent the signal to lock your doors for you. Have a nice day.
  13. OMG. I was just scrolling through to the end before posting this choice! w00t for Cussler! The hardest cache ever: The Promised Land. Took over a million people 40 years to find it! But the best cacher ever has GOT to be Bruce Almight. Heck, if he can dig up Hoffa... -T No wait, better idea. CSI. They'll not only tell you where it is, they'll tell you who visited it, what they had for lunch, and which one is responsible for the body nearby. -T

  15. Up here in AMC (Appalacian Mountain Club) land of the White Mountain National Forest, LNT (Leave No Trace) is religously followed so as to preserve. Any thoughts on how or if LNT is violated by placing a cache? For more on LNT, check out the Leave No Trace Webpage -T
  16. Near this cache There is a fire tower to look out into the city. My friend and I were just hiking up and down the hill repeatedly in prep for a White Mountiain hike the following week. Well, dusk had come and gone as we were making our final circuit. As we got to the top of the tower, we saw a couple up there with disheveled clothing, etc. The girl didn't realize that her bra was hanging out of the side of her shirt and didn't quite get her pants back on over her bottom. I turned to my friend and whispered "Let's get off this tower before they do..." Needless to say, now we try to finish hiking that hill before the sun goes down. -T
  17. ROFL. OMG. That was the first thing I thought of when I read the topic name! I like the kenya clip myself. And the LOTR. But this is OT now, so I'll quit. :-) -T
  18. Garmin eTrex Summit. I do a lot of White Mountain (NH) hiking. -T
  19. And who is storing away all these "geo"s anyways. Are they Prisms? Can I get one for myself? -T
  20. Geocache Pre-nup 1) In the event that we should break-up, all travel bugs are to be divded equally amongst the parties.... -T
  21. Already working on one for seacoast nh. THe thread is in the aforementioned New England section: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=65640 -T
  22. Anyone know of a site that indexes GPS coords for famous landmarks? The one I'm interested in at the moment is Shakespeares' Globe Theatre. -T
  23. No prob. BTW, have I mentioned what a great job you've done on this site... for the amount for crunchpower required, it does a great job, fast and stable. Congrats on the quality! Too few sites bother anymore, it seems. -T
