  1. I was comparing the file to a month old MyFinds PQ I ran on my account a month ago which did have the wpts file included in the zip. I just ran a new my MyFinds PQ and it doesn't have the wpts file but it uploaded fine to INATN. This is the first time he his trying to upload to INATN. After the file uploads, it calculates the stats (I think it does this step), and then comes back with an error message saying his id can't be found. It never shows his stats. When I go back and try to check his stats, it also doesn't recognize his id which is to be expected since his pq never loaded correctly. I don't remember having to do anything to set up the id on INATN before uploading. As I recall, you just need to upload your MyFinds PQ.
  2. I'm trying to figure out a problem a friends is having uploading his Finds PQ to itsnotaboutthenumbers. I think I've tracked the problem down to his MyFinds PQ. When you receive a pocket query, there are usually two files included in the zip. One is xxx.gpx and the other is xxx-wpts.gpx. I've looked at several of his normal PQs and he receives both files in the zip as usual. However, when I look at his MyFinds PQ, only the xxx.gpx file is in the zip. Just in case it was a bad PQ send, we waited until he could run a second MyFinds PQ. The second one also is missing the xxx-wpts.gpx. As a sanity check, I loaded the zip file into an empty database in GSAK. GSAK loaded the file correctly and had the proper caches listed. However, I do know GSAK doesn't use the xxx-wpts.gpx file so that makes since. Was thinking there could be a problem with his yahoo email account, but that doesn't seem right since he receives the normal PQs via the same email. Any suggestions?
  3. Thanks for the info. Luckily it's well within our travel plans so we will be sure to try and grab it on our way through Birmingham. It will take a few more days to go through the 17 bookmarks on the page, but I'm sure I'll get a few excellant caches out of the list.
  4. My 18 year daughter and myself will be making a jeep wheelin trip to Arkansas in June and will have a few days to cache on the way. Since we've completed Tube Torcher II (GCWA47), she's lost interest in the P&G but loves the physical challenging caches. Caches that would interest us include 1/2 day or less physical caches or those requiring 4wd. So, was looking for suggestions for some interesting and challenging caches that are along our route in Alabama, Mississippi, or Arkansas. We will be traveling along I-20 to Tuscalosa, then 82 through Greenville, MS, dip down to grab a Lousiana cache, then head over to Hot Springs. Anything within 50 miles or so of this route would be within reason. Thanks kohldad P.S. What are the oldest caches in AR, LA, MS, & AL?
  5. Had thought about the windows registry. I've messed with the registry keys before so no fear of the consequencies. Took a little bit of digging, but was able to find all the necessary keys. At first, didn't think it worked but then I realized I had forgotten to switch the map to use the topo. Thanks for the help.
  6. Just bought a new laptop yesterday and trying to get all my software installed. Problem is that during the summer I boxed everything up to redo my computer room and can't find my MSS&T CD along with the Topo2008 DVD. MSS&T isn't an issue because I'm buying a second copy since I'll be leaving the original copy on my old laptop which is being used by my daughter. However, I do need to move Topo2008. I installed my Trips & Waypoint Software since I found that disk. I then copied the Topo2008 folder (~3Gigs, 6,000+ files) to my new laptop. However, as expected, Mapsource doesn't see it. Can I simply modify a few registry entries or something else easy to get it working?
  7. Of course not, the taller grass raises the difficulty level for the cache you hide in yard ornaments.
  8. I usually consider the FTF claim and being able to raze my fellow geocachers enough of a FTF prize. However, I put out a puzzle cache called NLP. The first puzzle only reveals a second puzzle which reveals a third puzzle which finally reveals a short multi-stage. Figured this was going to be such a fun story from the FTF, which I wanted to hear first hand, so as the FTF prize, I put in a coupon good for a free desert at any of the local GeoCaching socials that I attended. It worked, the FTF had a very nice desert while he told me how he solved it and how he "cheated" when he had problems with the multi-stage. I have a series of night caches my family is working on which will take 2 nights to complete IF you are energetic. I'm sure the story will take much longer to tell so I may offer a whole meal as the FTF prize.
  9. On the day of the week that you select. If you have the query running every week, they are put in que on the day of the week you have selected at the time they were run last time.
  10. Found 2 of 6 on your first outing? That's outstanding!!!!!!!!!! Even after 1300+ finds, I somtimes have days worse than that. If I found everyone I looked for, I think it wouldn't be a s much fun. Lots of good advice above. One thing that I didn't see mentioned was to find a local event so you can meet fellow geocachers. This can be a social, meeting, group hunt, cache run, etc. I'm sure there are one or two in your area that would love to take you and the young ones out to find a few local caches. Have them take you to a variety of caches so you get a better understanding of different ways to hide them. You may even luck up and find a geocacher that has kids too.
  11. Sounds like you did the correct thing by logging it and making another entry requesting maintenance. As a CO myself, I would greatly appreciate what you did. The CO may have meant to delete the maintenance log, not your find. Some COs don't won't any negative comments about their cache. Would agree that if you still know the GCxxxx number, relog the cache with a simple "found it, thanks for the cache". Over the years, I have had a couple of cache logs deleted and performed similiar relog with no further issues. Good luck and continue having fun caching.
  12. VisualGPS does exactly what I was looking for, thanks very much. I also discovered that I could open a hyperterminal window set to 38400 on the correct com port and watch the raw data coming in. Have figured out how to decode at least the coords and time in the raw data so I can at least see the unit and bluetooth link is working. Thanks for the assistance.
  13. Well, nroute will take care of my mapsource, but it is limited to garmin units. Is there any software available for generic gps use to see the GPS satellite status? I have a navibe Gp735 and would like to be able to look at it via the serial port.
  14. I've looked til my eyes have crossed, but can't find it. A while back, I saw a post with a link to software that allows live tracking in MapSource (ndriver/ntrack?). There was also a software that allowed looking at a generic GPS unit in regards to satellite strength and status. Any body have a link to one/both of these?
  15. Just received my Navibe 735 today which I had just ordered on Tuesday from BuyGPSNow. Paid $49 shipped to my door. After a couple hour charge, I have it sitting in on my kitchen table with a solid lock. Seemed to have a pretty good review. Easily setup and was using in a few minutes.
  16. Haven't had much luck finding the adapter without buying the cable. For the same money, I can buy a new puck receiver with USB cable and not have to worry about the funny little adapter. Having looked at the semons site, have found two puck adapters that look decent. Any comments on these two? Navibe GM720 Evermore GM-R900 Am also checking into going with a Bluetooth receiver to eliminate a cable going to the laptop. Something like the Navibe GM735. Figure I could set this on the dash with the Car adapter cable connected and not have to worry about the battery. Between the bluetooth GPS and a wireless or bluetooth mouse, I wouldn't need any cables attached to the laptop unless it needed a charge.
  17. Well, that was my first option. But the response was it's the same as buying the membership. Not much help on the first response. My daughter found it by clicking on the advertisement below the menu on the left. (Edit: The advertisement to become a premium member today.) Don't know why they make it so hard to find. We entered the code and my membership extended by 362 days. I guess since the registration number was three days old, I lost those day. Like it added the number of days left in the registration to my existing date. At least it has been extended and I didn't loose the money.
  18. Okay, maybe I goofed, or maybe I can't find the right link. Hopefully it is the latter. I upgraded my wife's account to premium membership. While I was thinking about it, I checked my account and realized it expires next month. Since I couldn't find a renewal link, thought I was suppose to use the same link as a new one. So I clicked on the link for a new membership and paid for the fee. After I received the code, I realized, there isn't a place to enter it into my account to extend my memebership. Am I just missing a link or did I goof?
  19. I crushed the adapter that goes between the MSS&T GPSr and the USB cable. I found where I can order a new cable assembly for $42 + shipping, or just buy a new software bundle for $89 (though I already have 2007 so it wouldn't be much of an upgrade). Before I drop the money, any body have a better source?
  20. Received it this afternoon and have had about an hour to play with it. Looking at current and old houses here in SC, already found a couple of roads mislabeled, campground symbol in my parents front yard versus across a large pond and a few other minor things. One of the things I was wanting was the back roads in addition to determining grades on general roads out west and I'm a little disappointed tonight. Here in the "Low Country" where things are relatively flat, the roads show up great, however, in the Appalachin Mts, it gets hard to follow them becase the contour lines are so dominant. It would be nice if I could reduce the number of contour lines without turning off the roads too. As far as the intervals, I've noticed that the interval is based on terrain of the area. Near home where there it is flat, the interval is 25'. In the mountains of NC, the interval was 75'. Out in Yellowstone the interval is 150'. Looking at the inteval at Yellowstone, did notice good detail of the trails around Old Faithful. Without walking them and comparing tracks, the trails did seem fairly accurate. Just remember, this is my first map source map so nothing to compare it to except Microsoft S&T. I'm not a die hard hiker where I'm worried about exact elevations to pinpoint my location on another map, just a general over view and good idea of what to expect. So far, the topo seems to be providing that with fair amount of accuracy.
  21. Well, since I don't have any maps for the GPSr, I don't think I'll be dissappointed. As far as details, I don't hike with the GPSr to tell me where I'm going or what elevation is around the bend, that would take away the fun of the hike. I use it to get me back to the truck and tell me how far I've been. Wouldn't even have the GPS if it wasn't for GeoCaching. Placed the order today and already have a tracking number and shipment confirmation. Now, if I can just get some vacation time to travel to New Mexico where I could really use the software.
  22. Thanks for the update. Just placed my order today. After loading a trial section from a friend, my wife fell in love with the maps and details. So I had to buy it at her insistance.
  23. After several months, my compass seems to start acting erratic. I just completed a three day caching trip and paid close attention to the compass, screen, and sequence of events. Here are my observations and was wondering if anyone else has noticed the same issue. 1. Compass behaved normally at the beginning of the trip. GPSr had NiMH rechargeable batteries which are only two months old and hardly been used. Batteries had been freshly charged. 2. On second day, batteries were depleted so changed to second set of rechargeable batteries. These batteries are about three years old but still seem to hold a charge well and work great in camera and flashlights. Within minutes of installing these batteries, the compass strated acting up. 3. Recalibrate and compass would work correctly for 10-15 minutes. This time wend down hill fast as the batteries were slowly drained. Within an hour, the compass was basically useless. 4. Would notice that the compass on indicator on the screen would dissappear. Press and hold the page button, would receive the message that compass is turned "OFF". Press again and the compass would come back on, but would not be in calibration. 5. Finally changed out the batteries for a set of slightly used alkaline. Compass still would not work properly, but after an initial test right after changing the batteries I just left it off. 6. Four days later, with the same alkaline batteries which now have about 10 hours use, checked the compass to get ready for some caching. After calibration, the compass is working perfectly. Still need to do some field test, but a quick check seemed to indicate all is okay. I know that until recently, I have only used alkaline batteries. During all that time, the compass worked great. Only when I switched to NiMH rechargeable batteries have I started having problems. For those that have had issues, are you using rechargeable batteries? Anyone else notice some of the above indications or have other?
  24. I had a friend load up some of the local topo maps on my GPS tonight which naturally wiped out the custom map that was already loaded. I wasn't worried because the custom map I can reload when needed. Before I reload the custom map in a couple of weeks for a 4 wheeling trip, is it possible to use windows explorer to download the image file from the SD card so I can reload it back up after my wheeling trip? Or, does all the mapping handling need to be done through MapSource?
