Names can be either a put down or a compliment. I always thought of nerd as a put down and I thought the term geek evolved to be a positive way to say nerd. Anyway, I think geocaching is a geeky way to go treasure hunting. I think it may evolve and become mainstream - in which case it wouldnt be considered geeky anymore. Then again, I'm a geek - so of course I think its geeky!
  2. I see no reason to assume that the person who left the cache put the items into the cache. The caches are open to anyone. ONE of the three caches was placed by "Mission Creek & Not Your Stepping Stones" It seems a leap to reference a webpage and school not mentioned in the cache information or the profile page.
  3. Do I sense an Ender reference?
  4. I'm at about 50% dnf at this point. I was telling a friend and he was teasing me. I told him i'm always bringing my kids and sometimes its really hot and sometimes i had my mother in law along!! I suck at finding them, but it's fun!
  5. I gots a friend who found geocaching from another online friend. He has found over 100 in a month or two (if that long) and is now putting out his own. He thinks I'm a goof for reading forums (any forums ) so he has no idea of this drama going on. I must say he would be shocked people want to log every little thing they've done to try to get their numbers up. He loves going out and finding caches (I do the going out although the finding I'm not doing so well) and he loves that he has found over 100. But each smiley he has is exactly what it says it is. A found cache. Everyone is different and has different opinions, but this seems rather off the wall concept even if it does have lots of support for it.
  6. I can't see where asking a question about someone misunderstanding the rules of caching has anything to do with him being an "ex man of the cloth." Or why this thought is so evil it shouldn't even enter his mind. That seems rather to be attacking HIM instead of his post.
  7. Hey you guys, regional dialects are neat.
  8. I'm sure some of it is ignorance (which in this case is not a put down, I'm using it as the word is intended to be used - not knowing something) It is difficult to pronounce words that originate in French if you are not familiar with them. I just taught the kids in school about Gauguin - if you aren't familiar with French pronunciations how would you know how to pronounce that. I hope no one ever finds a cache in a niche with someone from London. My friend from London swears they say it "neesh" (nitch - here in ohio) How about couching homemade paper when it's drying? Is that "couching" or "cooching" I only knew the right way to say it because someone was willing to tell me. Now that being said, there is a difference between ignorance of the correct pronounciation and choosing to say it incorrectly even after someone explained how to say it. That probably would drive me bonkers.
  9. Here is the "pinned please read" thread with the info you are looking for: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=5 the actual post: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...p;#entry1000384 have fun!
  10. I imagine unsafe "looking" containers are great for some, adds to the interest. But on the other hand, is this geocaching or fear factor? Maybe it's both to some, maybe not to others. I think I've noticed in rl over the years that everyone is different.

  12. How often are things hidden in electrical looking things? I stay far away from that stuff. I'm the kind of person that would end up with a short in the heart from disassembling a live electrical box thinking I'm geocaching.
  13. I haven't dont many, obviously, but I was surprised to realize a few were in woods that looked nicely covered with poison ivy. Stayed away since I was wearing shorts but it made me wonder how many cachers get poison ivy!
  14. Hi to all the Ohio cachers! I'm a new Cleveland cacher - just got my GPS this week. Took the kiddos out today and we found three. It was a blast and hope to continue .
