  2. quote:Originally posted by Sissy-n-CR:I like the idea in general, but you might have a hard time getting it approved. The problem I see with it is the same as a traveling cache in that GC.com, and you, have no control over where a sub-cache is placed. What about listing the sub-caches, do they have a seperate page of their own? Can any person once removed from a cache be able to find and log it? In other words, any cacher can hunt and log a cache other that the one he hid? How are you planning to enforce the +/- X degrees hiding of the third and later caches? Some things to be worked out and established before put into motion. CR http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/72057_2000.gif The first big cache would be submitted as a single traditional cache, since that is all it would be, with its own log, and no requirement to find any other cache, the first finder would hide the next smaller cache (hidden inside the first cache), and submit that as a single traditional cache just like the first, etc. Each cache once placed, would be it's own individual cache, with its own log, and no requirement to find the others, but with a traceable thread to the original (by a word that's the same in all the cache titles) the +/- X degrees thing would be more of a guide than a hard and fast rule. I like the Centauri Mission: The Mother Ship maybe I'll just try to do something more like that. _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down? 3. Team Ekitt10 It's just a rough idea, with nothing set in stone. I like some parts of the idea, not all. I'm mainly looking for creative input to refine and polish the idea, or give it up. That 'Spawner' cache is a very cool idea, thanks for the link The Buzzard's. I am on the verge of hiding my first cache, which will be an average cache in a location I like a lot. This idea is for down the road, but I wanted to get started on the planning phase. I always think better with other people's input. The end result may not even look like it came from this thread, but sometimes suggesting something 'out there' gets creative input, that would not be available when starting with a run-of-the-mill idea. _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down? 6. I figure I'm a noob, it's my job to ask stupid questions, eventually it'll be my turn to answer them, then eventually it'll be my turn to IGNORE them. If you can't do that, ya might as well quit. I'd rather answer a stupid question, than hear somebody whine about having to read one. _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down? 8. I make mini-logbooks that fit perfectly in Altoids tins (pics at the link in my sig), and leave them in caches I find. Out of the 9 I've placed 4 have been traded for (2 by one cacher, fine by me). I'm hoping I'll find a cache and sign a logbook I made. (they are numbered on the inside back cover). My signature item is a guitar pick with a number etched into it, none of those have been taken, nor the 'Secret' mini-CD, or any of the dutch coins I leave. I don't take anything, and most of the caches I find have lot's of cool stuff in them so I'm not to surprised. I have made a bunch of 35mm x 35mm Geocaching fridge magnets, and will see how they go, since I'll be sticking them on the inside of the lid of ammo box caches, they will be seen easily. Yes I do watch for cachers trading for stuff I've left. _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down? 9. Here’s my idea: Start with a large ammo can cache, Inside it is all the normal cache stuff, and a smaller ammo can with all the normal cache stuff, inside that is all the normal cache stuff, and a smaller cache container, etc. until you are down to an Altoids tin with a micro tube in it. I would make all the cache containers, including the logbook, writing tool and some trading items, they would all be in the first cache. The first finder would leave the biggest cache box, and take the box with all the others, and hide it anywhere they want. The first finder of the second cache would leave the biggest cache box (second largest in the series), and take the box with all the others, and hide it, but they would have to find a suitable place somewhere along the line created by connecting the first to locations, (+/- X degrees and at least 1 mile away) only further away from the first cache than the second, this goes on until the micro-tube is placed further away from the first cache than any of the others, and all the caches are in a line. The challenge would be to find a good place along that line to hide the next smaller cache, although since the cache size keeps getting smaller it would be easier to find a place to hide it. The 'line' rule could be replaced with something similar, but the idea would be to follow the pattern of the first 2 caches and see where it leads. Or each hider could add a new rule for hiding the next one. Feel free say what you think, I won't pack up my toys and leave (even if you want me to). _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down? 10. I think it is WAY too dangerous, what if somebody tries to stand on a chair with wheels, that's an accident waiting to happen. When should we do it? _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down? Well, maybe if they screamed all the time, for no reason. 11. I am in the area of the cache, and I might want to try it, when I get to the tree, I'll decide then whether or not I'm up for it. The terrain rating is 4 stars, sounds like it's a 4 star. If it's more dangerous than it looks (like the tree is coated with grease higher up) that might be a problem, but if the risk involved is easy to assess from the ground, what's the problem? I voted 'leave it the way it is'. _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down? 12. I use an eTrex basic yellow for cache hunting only, I use the Street pilot III in my car to get me to the parking areas, so a basic eTrex is fine for me. The only feature it doesn't have that I might want is the built in compass feature that the eTrex Vista and Summit have (but it's pretty easy to just use a cheap pocket compass). Many have said Topo maps on your GPS are very handy, I can see how that would be the case, but so far (and I am new) I don't miss it. I think any eTrex or similar unit is a bad choice for a vehical nav unit, so if you want a single unit for in-car nav and cache hunting, a full featured handheld unit may be for you. But for cache hunting only, you don't have to get very fancy. _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down? 14. I make my own stickers, by printing them up, using Scotch double sided high performance adhesive tape (same adhesive used on aircraft placards) and shipping tape (for stickers that are narrower than the tape) for a cache I would tape it to the cache with an eighth inch boarder of tape. _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down? 16. I agree that most people should find a certain amount of caches before they hide one, I really don't think it needs to be a rule though. I have 16 finds and am in the planning stage of my first hide, and I'm still hoping it doesn't suck. If it does, hopefully I will get some helpful feedback, and I can improve it. I knew from the beginning that I would want to find several caches before I hid one, but up until a few finds ago (#13) even I didn't know how many. I think that magic number will be different for everyone, some people will do fine after one find, (not me). NO rule can take that dynamic into consideration, and shouldn't try. If you don't want to hunt a cache that has been placed by a noob with a low number of finds, Don't. It's easy to check on the hider to see if they have found what you consider to be the right number. If they don't, don't hunt that cache. I might want to and don't want to be deprived of the privilege, just because you don't want to. While I cringe a little when I see somebody post that they just found their first cache and are going to hide one tomorrow, I'm still rooting for them (us). I don't think you should try to mold this game to your liking, the diversity is one of the things I like most. _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down? 19. Cat-in-the-hat I think you are looking for 50ml plastic (non-sterile) screw cap centrifuge tubes, you can get 500 of them for $80 Here caps are included. You can get 200 Here but they don't give a price, you can get conical (pointed bottom) or skirted, so they stand upright on a countertop. If BrianSnat can't find his source, Try doing a Google search for "50ml centrifuge screw cap" If you don't need 200 of them. _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down? 21. quote:Originally posted by Zzzoey:I love ammo boxes, but I wonder if anyone else has had this happen to them. Only with the smaller ammo boxes mind you. When I pull them out of their hidey hole, and perch them on a rock or log or even on the ground... when you open the lid, if the contents aren't heavy enough, the whole thing falls over. I would enjoy a more balanced style of ammo can! Something you could open and leave open while you write in the cache log and your own log. Can't tell you how many times I have scrambled around trying to pick up stickers, pencils, beads, marbles, etc.. after opening the thing, grabbing out the log book and just standing there writing. They seem to have a mind of their own and flop over. Am I alone here? Those darn military guys need to start thinking about OUR NEEDS for a change The lids pop right off, if you are looking into the box from the latch side, push the lid to the left, simple. Goes back on just as easy. _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down? Well, maybe if they screamed all the time, for no reason. 25. Hey BrianSnat, I like your new avatar, very original, much better than the Geko you used to have I put down less than 20, I only have 16 hunts (14 finds) so it's hard to glean a pattern from that. I am Unemployed at the moment so I go whenever it isn't raining or threatening to (not very often). I am fortunate enough to live in a very cache-rich area, but I often go over ten miles from home, just to mix it up. _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down?
