  1. It all depends on what your definition of the word 'not' is. Used in a sentence-I did not have relations with........... I was thinking of that very thing when I wrote that post and of how sad it was, that it came out of the mouth of somebody I voted for (twice). I'm a lot better now.
  2. I would think the ignored emails from cache owners, the fact that he's doing something nobody else does but gives no explanation for why, and the high find per day rate is what makes most believe it's cheating. I think he's cheating. If he posted a "DNSL" on a cache of mine, I would email him, wait a week for a reply, if no reply, then I'd delete the find, and welcome him to re-log after signing the cache log book.
  3. On the cache submit form, there is a check-box with "Is this cache active?" next to it. The biggest mistake this site makes (in my opinion) is to have that box checked by default. Approvers will not see the cache until you check that box (so un-check the box if your cache is not in place). Now here is the important, but apparently not obvious, part: If you have not placed the cache, it IS NOT ACTIVE. If it is not active, you should not check the "is this cache active?" box (you will need to un-check it). If the box is not checked, it can't be approved, because the approvers won't see it. The whole idea is to NOT submit a cache for approval that is not there! You have no idea when it will be approved or how many people will be out looking for a cache you haven't even placed yet (1 is too many). So to answer the question, place the cache, then put it up for approval. If you just want to get a waypoint #, and do some HTML on the page and see how it looks, fine, just make sure to un-check the "Is this cache active?" box before submitting. I have a cache page I've been working on since December, I can do whatever I want with it, since it isn't active. Another basic thing that many don't think of, is this: Once you submit the cache page with the right coordinates (submit does not mean submit for approval, just submitting after editing), click on the map links on the cache page. Does that look like the area you hid it in? No? then something is wrong. I have hunted 2 caches that had very wrong coordinates listed (the last one was 1.6 miles off), in both cases, if the hider had just taken the 30 seconds or so, to click the map link on his own cache page, it would have been very obvious something was wrong. It would have saved me a lot of time, and them some embarrassment.
  4. So this code will be on the cache description page? If so, definitely a puzzle, but mentioning that it's a multi-stage cache in the description would be good. If I understand you, you want to make this a Travel bug "hotel" cache. Most Bug hotel caches (in this area, that I know of), are quick easy, near a freeway or two, caches to encourage frequent visits. I don't know if that's what you have in mind or not, just thought I'd mention it. Also since you are in PA, you may have meant to post this in the "Northeast" forum, instead of the "Northwest" but I may be wrong.
  5. I'm not sure what kind of pretzel logic you could use, to call not finding something, a find. Not trying to be a smart@ss, but why would you even have to ask? That's not rhetorical, I really want to know what the logic sequence was in the thought process, that would log a find for that. I'm not saying you're trying to cheat, or up your find count, heck for all I know, you don't give a crap about numbers. I think where it would break down for me, is when you come to the word "find" and try to rationalize changing the definition for it. Trips me up every time. Try telling the IRS you paid your taxes, when you wrote the check, got in your car, drove to the post office, but didn't put the check in the mail box.
  6. It's pretty easy to figure out where a given airplane is (generally, certainly you couldn't correct your course real time, with a ground vehicle, and keep up with an airliner), using their published rout and departure time. You won't hit an airplane at 28K'-32K' with a stinger, or any other small portable missile system. If you want to hit one on approach or just after take off, you wouldn't need somebody in the airplane to do that.
  7. Hmmm not sure if I really would want a pare of pants "handed down" to me, that can't be washed.
  8. That's too bad, some of my favorite cache hunts are the ones others couldn't find.
  9. I always chuckle, when I see a "Found it" where they say something like: "it took me 3 tries to find it..." and you look at the rest of the log and not one DNF from them. I think not posting a DNF is more selfish than it is anything else. Come on, let the rest of us enjoy your failure!
  10. USA PhotoMaps, is the only way to use TerraServer, see Rocket Man's link. If you have USA PhotoMaps you will never have a need for the Terra Server web site.
  11. they were most likely grandfathered in before code word caches were banned.
  12. If you have ever used ArmorAll or the like, nothing will stick to your dash, try cleaning the mount area a couple of times with isopropyl alcohol, and let it dry good before sticking.
  13. A very thin layer of oil around the edge of the suction cup will improve its tenacity greatly.
  14. I tried the Skydiver email notification service, and found it hit-or-miss for timely notifications. Now I just have a link to the new cache page for my state, and check it every now and then. Most caches in my area are approved between 7-10 pm on weekdays (any time on weekends). Since I prefer night caching, this means I get FTFs fairly often. If you see a new cache come up, and wonder if you have a good chance to get the FTF, check the times at the bottom of the cache page, if there are no logs the "last updated" time should be the time of approval (it may also be the last time the hider edited the page, but really, once you submit a cache for approval, all editing should be finished). Since it's GMT, you can look at the "current time" and see how long ago it came up (in the example below, the cache was approved 38 minutes before I brought the cache page up). I like FTFs because I have no way of knowing what the hunt will be like, can't read the logs, there aren't any. Hunting at night always adds an extra bit of challenge, but also has some advantages.
  15. I would love to see the fixed font size trend recede. So it's nice to hear CNN has . My favorite tech site, [H]ard OCP, has always had sizable text.
  16. BINGO Mopar. I just did a test to see when the watchlist email is sent for a new cache log entry. As I figured it is sent when you first log, so subsequent edits don't go out. For most of my watched caches, I only read the email of the log, instead of going to the cache description page. A preview function would let you edit a log entry before the watchlist email goes out. Not a big deal, but it would be nice. As for the preview in the forums, I have an LCD monitor with a native resolution of 1280x1024. If you use any other resolution than the native, on an LCD, the display looks like crap. I've noticed a lot of tech web sites (and a lot of other web sites) are migrating to non-sizable text on their sites, optimized for 800x600 or 1024x768, even though the chances that their target audience are using these resolutions are slim. Why everyone is doing this, just as the need for sizable text is getting huge (LCD monitors are expected to outsell CRTs this year, for the first time), is a mystery, and it sux! They used to have sizable text, just like the old forums used to have sizable text. When Groundspeak first changed over to the new forums a few months back, they had un-sizable text. After some requests, by myself and others, to go back to sizable text for the forums, Jeremy added an alternate skin, that you could select in your profile, that would let you have sizable text, which ROCKS! The skin lets you resize text everywhere in the forums, except in the add a post page, where the text is still pretty small on higher resolution monitors. So I use the preview for that all the time, just like jbhooker3 apparently does.
  17. I like the "Preview" function on the forum post page. Can we get a preview function for cache logs? For the same reason, to check links, and formatting. I know you can sneak a few edits in without getting the "...edited..." note at the bottom of the log entry, but a preview would be better. If not, no big.
  18. I like the "The Plague of Vague" background. The "Paintball Cache" hurts, ouch! The "Cache from the Black Lagoon" just ugly (I think that's the point though). My Cache pages have backgrounds, that many don't like, but I try to keep the part you have to look at, straightforward. Lot's of font colors and typefaces, for no reason, just don't do it for me. I hate background music, and animated gifs, and will switch to the printer friendly version if there's too much crap on a page. I've heard there are problems with backgrounds for people who download cache pages to a PDA? can the switch to downloading the printer friendly page somehow?

    Post Count

I like this idea and was going to suggest it, I do like to know how much someone has been around the forum, but don't care about specific post counts (Sparky-Watts). We are supposed to mention Sparky-Watts any time we say post counts, right?
  20. Bashing? I didn't bash, I just said I'd pass. Sensitive aren't we. You guys really are amazing. From my short post you determined that: 1. I haven't geocached, therefore I have an artery problem. (There are other forms of physical activity.) 2. I haven't geocached, therefore I should be laughed at for expressing any opinion. 3. I thought there were too many clues, so I must think I am some kind of genius. Hence WMD and Osama jokes are appropriate. 4. That I am an a**hole. I may be, I just don't think that you could have determined that with any degree of confidence from my short post. 5. Non-geocachers love the WWF. 6. I am a troll. 7. I make sock puppets. Apparently RockyRiver could not determine anything for certain, so he just rolled on the floor, etc. etc. I hope he gets his a** back on alright. Anyway, I'm sorry such a benign post made you all feel bashed. I hope no one ever really bashes you... I'm afraid you wouldn't survive it. As for my "disappearance", I was out trying to clear my clogged arteries. I don't think it's healthy to sit in one place surfing the internet all the time, do you? ;-) In any case, I have decided to give geocaching a try. I will, however, spare you all the long and tiresome stories of my adventures and misadventures. Besides, I just don't feel loved here for some reason. Not bashed exactly, just not loved. ;-) Bye... Yup, just like all the assumptions you made about a hobby you obviously don't have a clue about. When you make such declarative statements about something that you have such limited information on, a lot of fairly accurate assumptions can be made about you. I think you were given what you gave.
  21. Looks like the problems they had (less the hoarked up screen) are the same problems common to all GPSrs. Don't forget about the battery that had to be recharged every 2 hours. Bret Oh yeah. They did say that was with full bright on the screen, and voice prompting turned on (although I don't think there is too much prompting, in off-road mode, which is what you would use for caching). I don't do a lot of caches that take more than 3 or so hours (much of that time with the GPS off), but it would suck to run out of battery, during the hunt.

  23. This unit is sold (funds have been received). I am closing this thread.
