  1. Hello, I have not ran a query in a few months and never had a problem doing it before. Today I had generated a query and I am only getting one gpx file and not the additional gpx file containing the child waypoints. Is there something wrong with the query generator today, or am I doing something wrong?
  2. I have the topo maps and city navigator both installed on my Oregon 300. The topo maps are not routable, and not extremely detailed to where it shows trails (at least in my area NJ). However they are more helpful than not having maps at all. It helps when you are in the woods and can at least reference a pond or body of water on the map as well as nearby roads. I've looked into downloading some home brew maps, but I haven't found anything special for my area. I'm not technically proficient enough to create my own maps and would much rather pay to have reliable maps than to have spend so much time in learning how to do it.
  3. I too use the zagg. It's good quality plastic and probably will never have to be changed.
  4. I've never used a car power adapter with the oregon, however I don't find the screen brightness to be an issue, I've used it so far in different weather conditions and haven't had a problem seeing the screen. I do keep the backlight on at all times and still get enough battery life for a day's worth of geocaching. I always carry spare batteries in case I need them.
  5. I've had my oregon 300 for a few months now and have found about 18 caches without problems. It has track management, however I don't know the detail of what you want to do with it. I don't use it much. Most of your questions can be answered at garminoregon.wikispaces.com You may also want to consider the Delorme PN-40 it can be had at a much better price than an Oregon and all the maps are included with it. The paperless caching on the Oregon is excellent, it holds the last 5 activity logs, plus the hint. It also stores child waypoints such as parking areas for caches if they are included on the cache description page. You can also enter your logs right on the unit as you find them, then plug it into the computer and upload your logs to Geocaching.com.
  6. Yes you can. Go to main menu >mark waypoint > save and edit. This will initially save the waypoint where you currently are, but you can edit the location and name it what you want.
  7. I have an Oregon 300 with City Navigator and Garmin TOPO maps loaded. I was wondering if there is any other Topo maps that would have more detail, such as showing more trails. Especially for the Northern New Jersey area. I had briefly looked at Moagu, I know it's not free. Is it difficult to build your own mapsets? I don't really want to get too involved in the technical aspects and learning how to build mapsets. If something is available for purchase that is better than the Garmin US TOPO maps 1:100k. for the NJ area or a free easy simple download, please point me in the right direction. I would love better maps for RIngwood State Park, NJ.
  8. I have the Oregon 300 and I love it. Keep in mind though that it does not come with any preloaded maps, just a basic basemap. Unless you already have the map programs they can be very expensive. You may also want to consider the DeLorme PN-40, it's a pretty good bang for the buck including all the maps you need.
  9. Magellan recently sold their GPS business to MIO. Who knows if they will continue to support their units.
  10. Can someone provide a link for the "FREE" maps?
  11. I have a set of the Engergizer 2500mah that I bought at walmart and they are fine. It's important to get a decent charger, most chargers out there are junk. There are two brands that I know of that make good chargers and that is MAHA and LA Crosse, you can read several reviews on the La Crosse bc 900 on Amazon.com. I don't know the Maha model number but it's mentioned several times in the La Crosse reviews. It takes about 2 or 3 charge cycles before the batteries get up to full capacity. You wouldn't know that with a cheap charger, but the MAHA and LA Crosse chargers both have test modes on them that tell you the batteries actual capacity, they also have refresh modes that can bring older batteries back to a useful life.
  12. I have various brands of NIMH batteries from 2700mah down to 2100mah. I recommend the Rayovac Hybrid batteries 2100mah. The hybrid batteries don't self discharge like regular nimh batteries do when not in use. With 2500mah batteries I get about 10 hrs with the backlight on all the time. A little less with the rayovac hybrids, because they only come in 2100mah. But at least I still get about 8 hrs. I've had bad luck with some no brand 2700 mah. I have the La Crosse BC -900 charger which can be had on Amazon with included batteries for about 35 bucks. This charger can tell you what the actual battery capacity is, and I've seen some cheap batteries advertised at 2700mah when they actually only hold about 1500mah. Other people recommend maha powerex 2700mah batteries. And for the hybrid or low self discharge batteries go with Rayovac or Sanyo eneloop. These types of batteries don't need to be charged the day before use, you can have them laying around for a few weeks without losing thier charge. You will eventually save money with rechargeable batteries and they last longer than alkalines. By the way, the battery meter does not work well on the Oregon units. At least this is true with NIMH batteries. I've not tested alkalines.
  13. Thank you. Has anyone on here used maps from mapwell or MOAGU? is it worth it? I'm a casual geocacher, thought it would be pretty neat to see satellite images of where I am, and I wonder if it's detailed enough to show trails?
  14. That brings up the satellite page which shows wich satellites it's acquiring. Not the same as Satellite Imagery, such as what you would see on Google Earth.
  15. I guess they didn't address the battery meter being incorrect. How do you get Satellite Imagery on the unit?? I have the 300 model.
  16. Make sure the battery type is set properly in the settings. That affects the battery meter display. Yes, I have the setting correctly on NIMH. I've seen other posters complain of the battery meter being off too.

  18. I've no problems with it either if I leave the backlight on at all times..... 10 -12 hours of battery life with the backlight on isn't too bad. I'm never out that long most of the time, and I always bring spares.
  19. I have the Oregon 300 with City Navigator and TOPO maps loaded. I have no issues with the screen being dim.. I can read it just fine. My only complaint about the unit is that the battery level meter is not accurate at all, which will hopefully be addressed in a future firmware. I use NIMH batteries and have gotten over 10 hrs with energerizer 2500mah batteries with the backlight on at all times and compass on. I am switching to Rayovac hybrid batteries 2100mah, only because they retain a charge longer than ordinary NIMH batteries. Regular NIMH batteries are good if you charge them right before you go out but if you let them sit around for a week or so they drain, not so with the Hybrid batteries or Sanyo Eneloop brand.
  20. The batteries will not charge in the unit. You need a separate charger. I bought a 300 because I already had city navigator and garmin topo, it's basically the same thing as the 400 without the preloaded maps. The 200 does not have an electronic compass or altimeter, but otherwise I think it's the same as the 300 and the 400. You may want to consider the Delorme Pn-40 on Amazon.com it is an excellent value, comes with preloaded maps both topo and auto navigation, it's much less expensive than the Garmin.
  21. Thank you, I did not delete the basemap but I did move it outside the folder it should have been in. It works now.
  22. Does anyone know what directory and filename the basemap is stored under? I think I deleted or may have moved it to my SD card. It's not showing up under the section where I can select maps. I did load City Navigator and Garmin TOPO maps on it. Anyway, if I did delete the worldwide basemap, can I download it again from Garmin?
  23. Hello, I am currently using 2700mah NIMH batteries and am pleased with the the battery life. I am considering buying some low discharge batteries such as the Eneloop or other brands. The Garmin Manual states that its best to use 2500mah or better, but the highest low discharge batteries are only rated 2100mah. Can I still use them? If i get 5 or 6 hrs battery life with the backlight on I'd be happy. It would be nice just to keep a set of low discharge batteries in my car in case I have forgotten to charge my regular NIMH batteries.
  24. Thanks for the info. How can i get the tracklog to overlay on Google Earth? Is it a paid for version of Google Earth or the basic?
  25. Go into Setup and then Maps and make sure that the TOPO map is enabled.
