  1. I tried to search before I posted and found some info on Griffith Park but still a little confused. I've never been there and will be visiting from North Carolina. I'll have a rental car. Based on Google earth, there are numerous roadways within the park. How should I go about caching in the park? Is there a certain way to enter the park, is it difficult to drive around and park on the roadside? Is that acceptable? Any info you can give me will help. I'd like to narrow down my plan of attack and just don't know where to begin. I will definitely be visiting the Observatory and plan to do the caches around there but didn't know how to approach caching in the rest of the park. Thanks so much!
  2. Thanks NordicMan! I definitely have tried the SMACK from all angles!! Didn't seem to help much. haha. Seriously though, I have thought about upgrading since the Palm IIIxe only cost me 19.99. You mentioned the Palm M500 series-would you recommend any specific model? I'm going to check out the other threads that deal with "best pda for caching" but a lot of that info is old now. Seems most people are switching to smartphones and apps to do their paperless stuff. I really don't want to go that route just yet. Anyway, thanks again for your reply!
  3. While most people that do paperless caching have upgraded to smartphones, etc. to handle the paperless part, I still use an old Palm IIIxe that I got off Ebay. However, I've noticed that after about 10 mins. of continued use, the display starts to flicker (the contrast is really what's flickering). It starts out slow but eventually the flickering becomes so bad that you can no longer read anything on the screen. Anyone have any ideas about what might cause this or how I could fix it? This happens whether the batteries are brand new or not. I have noticed though that if the batteries are wearing down, the flickering begins much sooner and gets worse much quicker. Hope all that made sense...
  4. Any new information regarding geocache navigator, Samsung M520 and Sprint? Still waiting to determine if this phone will ever work with navigator before purchasing. Thanks...
  5. Haven't seen any updates in this thread for a while. Any news on the Samsung M520 or LG Rumor for Sprint? I'm specifically waiting to purchase a new phone based on whether navigator will work or not (on one of the models above).
  6. Forgive me if any of the following sounds stupid---I'm trying to understand the whole "use the cell phone for more than just calls" thing. I am really wanting to find a phone that works with geocache navigator. However, the more I look, the more confused I get. And to add more confusion, I just read a post about using wap.geocaching.com. So, I guess my first question here is this: what's the difference between using geocache navigator versus using any web enabled phone to access geocaching.com through the wap interface? Secondly, I use Sprint and I really want to make sure I purchase the best all around phone. I've looked at the following: LR Rumor, Samsung M520, Katana, Razr V3M, and Blackberry Pearl 8130. Some work with navigator already, others appear to be "still in testing". Can anyone give advice about any of those phones? Thanks so much!!
  7. I did get the email. I am out on Spring break with my kids. Should be able to get this off to you tomorrow afternoon when I get back. Larry I spoke with Sprint at the end of the week. The device is in certification testing and should be on the deck in the best case within a few weeks (no promises though as we don't control the process). Larry (Trimble Outdoors) Just checking in to see if any new info is known about status of LG Rumor. I'm really wanting to purchase this phone, but want to make sure that GN will work with it. I've looked at a few of the other phones listed as "supported phones" on the trimble.com website. Don't really like the ones I could find and there are several that I can't even locate as being sold by Sprint. Just hoping that the Rumor will be in the list asap!
  8. I've tried changing the uppercase "G" to a lowercase "g" in both locations of the text file using notepad. Doesn't make any difference....gpx file still isn't recognized by google earth. Couldn't get Microsoft Streets and Trips to work either using the info. GSAK seems to read the info just fine. I'm pretty comfortable with computer "stuff" and have tried everything I can think of to fix this. No luck. Anybody else having problems running pocket queries and then trying to open in Google Earth or is it really just me?
  9. Despite the uppercase/lowercase "g" issue, my pocket queries are still screwed up. They will open in GSAK, but not in Google Earth. Also, after opening in GSAK and trying to export to Microsoft Streets and Trips, I get an error message stating it's a "bad format". What's the deal? I just renewed my premium membership so that I could using the "cache along a route" option, yet it doesn't work for some reason. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  10. I'm having trouble getting google earth to recognize the .gpx files. I've tried changing the uppercase G to a lowercase g...still no luck. Won't even open in Google Earth.
  11. Is anyone using the Lowrance XOG for marine use (ie: marking/finding rock piles, brush piles, etc.)? I use a Garmin etrex for geocaching, but my dad is really interested in the capabilities of this Lowrance unit for his fishing trips. 1. Does the unit come with the ability to use an external power supply while in the boat? 2. How visible is the screen in sunlight? Would like to get any feedback possible. Thanks in advance!
  12. Added my vote. Now I just need to narrow it down to how many in my age range (31-40) are single guys so I can figure out the chances of ever finding a "geocaching partner"!!!
  13. I love my small garmin etrex for geocaching but I have very little experience using GPS for anything other than caching. My dad wants to use GPS for marking his "favorite/best" fishing spots. His eyesight is bad and he is electronically challenged. Does anyone have any experience w/ the large screen units for something like this or could anyone recommend a specific unit? Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated!
  14. Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll just use something/someone else instead.
  15. Have had several on me so far this year. Have had a total of 4 dug in deep in the last 2 weeks (2 big, 2 little). Makes me really nervous--my mom always warned me about Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. I've never known anyone that had it--how about you guys? Is there anything (ie:spray, etc.?) that will help keep them off? I use sportsman spray that contains 40% DEET---thinking I'm going to try the max edition that contains 100% DEET. Just so you know, I'm in North Carolina--home of GeoWoodstock 5 so if anyone is headed out this way for that event, be prepared for ticks!
  16. I found the info. about using the geocaching logo for non-commerical stuff, etc. However, I'm interested in using "Signal the Frog" in a design for a personal geocoin. Is this allowed? If so, does it have to be the exact image of Signal or can it be altered (ie: he would be holding something)? Thanks for any help.
  17. What a great log...laughed out loud the whole time thinking...this sounds so much like me. You'll have to let everyone know when you go back for it again.
  18. I'm trying to get the same thing to work but didn't have anywhere to test it.
  19. Guess mine's pretty simple to figure out... I live in North Carolina (NC) and I'm a parole officer. Sometimes when I call my clients on the phone and a family member answers, I can hear them say in the background, "It's your parole lady." Always sounded funny to me so I decided to go with it, hence...NCPAROLELADY.
  20. Sorry I didn't explain my situation better...I created a new account. The forums I had read indicated that you can't "change" your name any longer. So, do I look up the travel bug by name and just log it as discovered?
  21. I searched for an answer and didn't find one. Hope I didn't overlook it. Anyway, I changed my geocaching name and want to relog the few travel bug/geocoins that I had found under the old name. What's the best way to do this since the bugs/coins aren't in my possession anymore? Thanks!
