  1. Whether or not a cache owner chooses to give puzzle hints is entirely at their discretion. Using NM or NA in this situation is inappropriate. You are not entitled to receive help or hints from a cache owner. If someone abused the NM or NA logs on one of my caches in this manner, I would immediately file a complaint to put a stop to the harassment. Totally inexcusable and a disgraceful way to treat cache owners. As far as I know he hasn't done this. His account did get locked at one period of time for posting NA logs from fake sock puppet accounts that he created. He still does not realize this is what happened. He thinks he just couldn't login. They were tracked to his IP address.
  2. I figured out how to do the "Tips & Tricks" so yes, I am NOW getting the emails and subscribed to the blog. I don't know what other souvenirs are coming in August besides the 2 Mission ones and the International Geocaching Day one but I'm sure they'll tell us in a couple weeks. There are no other souvenirs in August. These 3 Mission GC ones and the International Geocaching Day are it. Nothing else. Where does it say there will be no other souvenirs in August 2016 besides the 3? If you're right, then the souvenirs after that will be in September, but I hope they tell us at least 15 days before. This IS the summer souvenir promotion that they have been doing every year. This year's is the 3 Mission GC souvenirs and one on International Geocaching day, like always. That's it. That's the summer souvenirs. There is a CITO souvenir that you can earn during September.

  4. These are already included in some of the officially approved third party partner apps. Unless there is a specific reason that Groundspeak is still trying to develop their own in-house app, it would almost make more sense to endorse the use of the third party apps. I've seen new people get extremely frustrated with the new app and that gives them no desire to continue caching. I understand that. And that's why I use a third party app. But if they are promoting their "new and improved" app, they should probably add more important features to it before they start adding features like being able to find a GeoTour.
  5. I find this feature less than useful. There are a bunch of other things that should be added to the app BEFORE being able to see if a cache is on a GeoTour or not... And you expect us to know the GT # in order to look it up on the app? Completely and utterly useless...
  6. ^This I'm shocked that the app's developers haven't been spending 100% of their time on migrating critical features from the Classic app, like field notes. Instead, a new feature that will be seldom used* has been given higher priority. I won't even go into the laughably-incomplete definition of GeoTours used in the app or the ongoing usage of gratuitous and time-consuming animations. Boy, whatever the situation was that caused Groundspeak to hastily retire the old app and rush out the alpha-level-at-best new app, it sure screwed over both Groundspeak and the users. I'm just glad I do most of my caching with a handheld GPSr! *seriously, how many people are going to look at the GeoTours online, find the one they want, find the Help Center article, look up the GT code, and then search for it in the app? These guys expect us to know the GT number for the geotour?!? Yeah right...
  7. The guidelines say that event caches are usually archived 14-30 days after the event, so no one should post NAs on them until at least the 31st day. Apparently someone WAS posting NAs a week after the event, which is why it came up in this thread. If somebody DID post an NA on any of her events (which I doubt) - she must've deleted the logs as I do not see any. I NEVER said it was MY events that I was talking about. None of my events have ever gotten a Needs Archived log. And NO I have never deleted a Needs Archived log from any of my caches. Seems you need to read a little bit more carefully.
  8. There's more in the article, just click the link. That said-if I notice that a cache has 6+ DNF logs (*with different dates) going back a year or more, I will post a NA log on it to bring it to a reviewer's attention and help start the process of archiving that listing. * I discount multiple DNFs on the same date on the assumption that several people looking together all missed it as a group and quit looking at the same time. People keep referencing the bullet points without reading the part that is actually bolded in the help center : Please use this log only if you have visited the geocache location So people should visit every geocache location before any of them post an NA on that cache? Yes! That is EXACTLY what the guidelines say.
  9. Are the NAs unwarranted? Do you consider a NA log on an event a week after it occurs unwarranted? I'm not in to events. Explain why this is bad? When the event is over, it's over, no? Not that I care one way or the other if an event is listed as active when it's over, since I don't do events anymore, but what's the problem here? I don't understand the problem either. None of her event listings have an NA log and if its been a week since an event everybody has already logged, then its not a good idea to shove the information in other people's cache listings that may not've gotten the opportunity to go. If its been a month, and still listed and interrupting the searches then that can get frustrating. The problem is this. Not everyone has a smartphone so they cannot log any cache "in the field." They have to wait until they get back home or to another place with wifi so that they can log into their computer to log all their caches, which includes events. Sometimes people take long vacations and trips where they attend such events and they don't always have wifi. I for instance just took a week long trip to get to GeoWoodstock. I attended quite a few events and the Mega itself. I also stayed at a campground which did not have wifi. If the events were archived after only a week it would take me a considerable amount of work to actually log these. Like I said, not everyone has the capability to log caches right away, or even within a day. This is why events are not archived within a week of their occurance.
  10. They would have to be Geocaching.com recognized geotours. There are dozens of geotrails/geotours that aren't connected with the official Geocaching.com GeoTours. I think there are A LOT of other things that should have been put into the app ahead of this feature. Like the ability to post a Needs Maintenence, ability to log a trackable when you are logging a cache, the ability to add a favorite point. There are still MANY features from the Classic app that don't exist in this one.. I'm still disappointed with the app.

  12. A certain someone in my area (I'll give you 3 guesses who) has been caught red handed for creating fake accounts on geocaching.com for the exclusive purpose of putting NA logs on caches and events. There is a good example of behavior that would cause the local reviewer to simply ignore all future "Needs Archived" logs from an account. Exactly. I believe this has happened with the reviewer in our area. So many bogus NA logs causes a "boy who cried wolf" scenario

  14. Hopefully PondBird isn't doing that. When someone makes a habit of cheerfully reporting NA logs to the entire forum on an ongoing and regular, I can't trust that it's in good faith. Good geocachers write clear, descriptive logs of what they find at the GZ if they choose to search for a cache. Good geocachers report issues they find for the benefit of other cachers, and so there is a clear history that helps the reviewer if need be. Good geocachers do not denigrate reviewers for taking a reasonable amount of time to act on a problematic cache. Good geocachers do not post volumes of frivolous NA logs on caches they have no intention of finding, for the sole purpose of pestering other geocachers. I think I see your point. When does the armchair NAer do more harm then good to their relationship with the reviewer? With regards to the pestered cache owner, meh. If they truly have a string of DNFs and maybe an NM in the mix, checking the cache is in order. If that's a hassle, maybe they can archive the cache. Again, if it was a one-off NA on a neglected then sure, whatever. Maintain your cache, bro. But this appears to be some sort of side game or vendetta that isn't limited to obviously neglected caches. These posts occur with some frequency in a variety of threads. It's troubling behaviour. I don't think we should be condoning this kind of deliberate antagonism in the name of cache maintenance. I note that none of those include "You came across a cache listing online that might have a missing cache, couldn't be bothered to go look for it yourself, and dumped the problem in a reviewer's lap without trying to actually help them determine whether the cache was missing or not." Yes!
  16. Okay I have a few questions. I have the Oregon 700. Today was the first time I actually used it to find a cache. 1) Is there any way for it to auto upload field notes instead of Found it logs? It was automatically set to auto upload and it submitted a blank Found it log for me when I was back home connected to wifi. I don't really like typing on any GPS device. So is this possible? 2) I had a really strange occurrence today. I had the GPS connected to my phone via Bluetooth. The GPS had my location correct. When I looked at the map on my phone, my phone thought I was in Spain (I live in New York state). When I turned off Bluetooth on my phone, my GPS on my phone had the correct locations. I turned Bluetooth connection back on and it went back to saying I was in Spain. I turned the GPS off and my location was correct again. Anyone have any idea what is going on? Or how I can fix this?
  17. That'd make Antarctica a tad difficult since there are no countries in that continent. "Antarctica" should be excluded in any challenge cache requirement in my opinion. What I'd like to do is a "Create your own challenge" cache. But I don't know how to do a Project-GC checker code. What are the rules for your Create Your Own Challenge? I was wondering that myself. I have no clue what that means..
  18. How about cache-advance.com? A small store out of Spokane, WA. Or spacecoastgeocachers.com they're a small store in Florida. They will ship to you.
  19. It usually depends on how big the park is and how big the particular pavilion is that you plan on using. If you can find a phone number or email for the Town or village Parks Department that would be best. If not I would say just call town hall or something like that and ask if it's required for you to reserve it. You might not have to There is no "parks" department on either site so should I call the village clerk or mayor or town supervisor? I found this on the village of Newark website. Or this website, depending on which park you're planning on using. http://www.co.wayne.ny.us/bg_parks/

  22. I use Cachly too and it does everything I would want a geocaching app to do. Also the developer is very responsive to issues and feature requests. Well worth the $5 in my opinion.
  23. Hi! I tried this and I can't see option to open it inside GC application at all. Where exactly I can find it? If you are clicking the link from an email, it has to be an email in the native iPhone email application (not others like gmail, yahoo, etc.). So click this link and it will open in Safari. You will then need to pull down slightly on the page and then you should see at the top of the page something like "Open in Geocaching app"
