  1. You are correct.....its the 60 series that has the quad and it was the 62S I took back into the crack ( didn't have the 78S then ) ......and in that same situation I would want the 62S. That said on an extensive trip out west along with the forest and swamps of LA and Fl the 78 has matched up well with the 62........I guess you could say a 78 is a 62 minus the quad.
  2. Yes I have....its all I use now, my wife uses the 62S and they read pretty much the same as you would expect. I've always used units with the buttons on the bottom going back to the Magellan Platinum so at first the 78S seemed awkward but in no time at all I began liking the buttons better. Seems all new firmware is buggy so when a 62S ver came out that that performed great I put it on all 3 62S units and saved a copy. When I bought the 78S rather than taking a chance I replaced the firmware with the one I use on the 62S ( I think 6.8 ) Once in a great while I will turn it on ( I may have just been using it a few min earlier ) and it will do a re-set...don't know why.......I tweak my settings and its fine. I use GSAK and from time to time a file glitch will cause me to do a re-boot of a locked up unit ( happens with ALL my units ).....a good friend with a 62S running the exact firmware and map has NEVER had a lock up.....they only download direct from GC.com ??
  3. Years ago we were caching in the cracks by Mono Lake, CA and the 62S did great.....when the crack closed to where I had to turn sideways to get through I would lose sats but as soon as it opened up a bit I would pick up again. Once at GZ I marked the location and while my wife stayed below I exited the crack and climbed on top and walked over until I was just above her ( about 90 feet ).........with an unobstructed view of the sky I had GZ at exactly the same place as when I was at the bottom. I can't say enough about the 62S and quad antenna. As I've said elsewhere I now use the 78S as its the same as the 62S but in a better case.
  4. I would vote none of the above. I own a 60 CSX, 3-62S, 1-64S, an Oregon and a slew of older Magellan's and have used most all others in the field with fellow cachers. The 60 series cases( 62 on up ) are covered with a rubberized covering that when exposed to sweaty hands will literally shred to pieces ( my old faithful is held together with tape )...my wife who doesn't sweat has a unit holding up fairly well......I've seen units that looked like they were dragged 10 miles through briars. A few years ago I decided to try a GPSmap 78S......this unit is marketed as marine but it is a 62S in a MUCH better case. The case is hard plastic with thick rubber on the side edges and covering the battery and ports......the buttons are on top making them much easier to operate esp. when driving. I removed the firmware and replaced it with 62S software 6.80 which has performed so well in my 3- 62S units. I see these are running about $239.00 Anyone wanting a unit for trail or boat should check this one out.......even if there were no rubberized coating issues I would still much prefer the 78S.
  5. Get a 78S.......its a 62S in a much better case that won't fall apart. I have 3-62S, 1-64S, Oregon 450, and several Meridian units but the 78S is the best.
  6. Perfect response, can't add to it. I also use the 62S, 64S, and a 78S. The 78S is a 62S in a much better case that won't fall apart like the 60 series.....great unit and the buttons are easier to use as well.
  7. Get a 3" round extension mirror ( I've tried all types and like it best ).....I've probably used it on 90% of our micro finds. Micro's are not usually in plain sight and you usually have to look over, under, or behind something......it also really saves knees and backs. Along with hat, boots, and hiking stick its always with me.
  8. You are preaching to the choir, thanks.
  9. I've used a fake 4 X 4 electrical box and magnetic numbers with the log on back.
  10. +2 Years ago I made all mine PMO and find my caches fare better and I get almost 0 rude logs.
  11. I think a lot depends on the area you live in. If I used a lanyard and had my GPS dangling it would get torn up in no time like my pants do by briars and thorns as well as tree branches. We've always carried our units in a soft canvas carrier worn on our belts.....if my units not in my hand its in the case. As has been said if you sit something on the ground while you grab a cache oft times you will forget it.....I've gone back days later to retrieve a hiking stick or shoulder pack.
  12. I also love the Eneloop's but I charge mine in a dedicated Maha charger.
  13. Correct. I became a Meridian " junkie " and have multiples of each model including the blue cased unit mentioned. Only the Platinum model had the three axis compass ( one of the first to have one ). I would recommend upgrading to the latest firmware after which all Meridians behave pretty much the same. These units have the best cases of any I have seen and about 14,000,000 caches can be loaded as waypoints in files of 500 or less. While caching around the country I would find locations where the Meridian would not work ( I would try several ) but an Oregon 450 or 60 CSx would do fine. I never found out what caused it....maybe a jammer that only the Meridian was susceptible to. Because of this, paperless caching, and other features I moved on to the Garmin 62S and 64S but because the cases fall apart on these ( I think salty sweaty hands as my wife's does O.K. ) I am now using a Garmin 78S...its actually a marine unit but has a great case without the rubbery shroud of the 62-64.....it has a more ergonomic button arrangement then the 60 series and has paperless caching, 3 axis compass, etc......if you ever make a change I highly recommend it.
  14. O.K. , it works in MS Edge but not Firefox.......it works fine using Firefox on my XP units ????
  15. I still can't get it to scroll.....used corded mouse, cordless mouse, and pad on laptop.
  16. I just got a new Dell laptop w/ W10 and I can't scroll either.......what do I do ?
  17. I have a chirp hidden in front of my house ( it gives directions to the final cache location about 1 mile away ). Only certain Garmin units pick up the chirp and on those units you have to have " chirp enabled " selected. When you get to about 30 feet of the chirp your unit will pick it up and display the message that the CO programmed into the chirp. They are supposed to be waterproof but I put mine in a container for extra protection. Its a seldom found cache but I'm sure creative things could be done with a chirp but again it would only be available to some Garmin users.
  18. Nowhere can I find what type antenna the 750 has......only " redesigned antenna "......I'm guessing its a patch. Once I bought a unit with a quad helix antenna ( Magellan Platinum in 2003......I heeded advice from this forum ) I've never looked back. Years ago I switched to the Garmin 60 series and other than a Oregon 450 ( does O.K. ) I stayed with the 60's including the 62S and 64S. Its hard to imagine a unit with better reception than the 64.
  19. If this doesn't work I doubt they are on the unit. At the point where you say you saved the route and sent it to email I check to make a PQ of the route......it then is listed with you're other PQ's and you can load it as you do them.
  20. I also recommend the 64S......great unit as are the 62S.
  21. It's unwise to visit any Earthcache - particularly one in the back-country - without thoroughly reviewing the listing in advance. Earthcaches often involve data collection and observation that may require special equipment, or may need to be done over a period of time. If someone is reading an Earthcache listing on the top of a mountain for the first time, that's just poor planning. Earthcaching isn't for everyone. Unfortunately, many geocachers jump into it thinking it's an easy way to pump out a no-maintenance cache in a spot they'll never visit again, but that's not the case. Kudos to the geoaware team for maintaining quality Earthcache listings over all these years. You got that right.....yesterday it was me on that mountain and it was 111 deg in the shade ( there was no shade )....there were 7 questions some of which had as many as 4 " sub questions " so about 20 or more head scratching questions ( nothing posted at site ). I took my picture with my GPS and decided to DNF and bail......as is often said all cachers do not have to find all caches. My only complaint really was I feel it should have been rated 3-4 diff instead of 1 1/2. When you're on the road for weeks its hard enough to keep up with the PQ's and routes so ratings are important...they let me know if a cache fits my time constraints. Around home I can do more preparation and would never walk away from an EC no matter how incorrectly rated.
  22. I agree, mine also. My 3 - 62S are also dead on.
