  1. Come to think of it, I think we should make one of those Hitler tirade parodies based off the scene of "Downfall". "Hitler finds out one of his caches received a TFTC log". GREAT......I'm in tears. Also, Narcissa, YOU GO GIRL !

  3. If it looks really real I wouldn't do it. Years ago an out of town owner asked for the next finder to remove a rubber snake from his cache because of many complaining emails. I took it out and threw it on my work bench at home and it gave me a jolt EVERY time I saw it....finally threw it in the trash.
  4. Same here.....its been a LONG time since we used a paper map. There has only been a handful of times when we were 5+ miles in the middle of nowhere and I've always felt comfortable with two handhelds. If we were walking days in to the wilderness we would do several things different then we do now.
  5. The 64S would be a bit more and for my use wouldn't be worth it.
  6. I advocated for this many years ago but was told by TPTB that the signing of a log was crucial to the game and its not going to change. Codes and numbers can be used in the stages of a multi.
  7. This is what I do and then zoom in.....always good to check if they are there.
  8. I think you would really like the 64 series although I don't own one. I do own 3- 62S units and , for the money, I think they are they way to go.
  9. Amen to this one....I have lost test instruments and electronics over the years.EVERYTHING I own that takes batteries has low discharge NIMH....for GPS, cameras, and other critical items I use these : http://www.thomasdistributing.com/New-Version-Panasonic-Pro-was-Sanyo-XX-Eneloop-2550-mAh-Low-Discharge-AA-Batteries_p_2927.html For clocks, remotes, toys, etc. I use these : http://www.thomasdistributing.com/Maha-Imedion-AA-2400mAh-Rechargeablen-Low-Discharge-Batteries_p_2252.html This is my all time favorite charger : http://www.thomasdistributing.com/MAHA-MH-C801D-AA--AAA-Battery-Charger-DELUXE-8-Cell-Professional-Battery-Charger-w-Full-LCD-Display_p_2559.html I have a couple of these for traveling and they work fine : http://www.thomasdistributing.com/-Maha-MH-C204FA-Intelligent-Rapid-Charger_p_1105.html In addition to being a GPS junkie I'm a battery / charger junkie and over the years have tried everything.....I have drawers full of product and no telling what I have thrown away. I've born the expense and done the testing so save yourself the brain damage and get the above. I will say I used MAHA NIMH reguler batteries for years with no problems but the Eneloops are a cut above. The weak link of rechargeable batteries has always been the charger.....I've used MAHA ( I own every one they make )for many years with great results. Quote from a new post : I appreciate the reply. The PN-40 is definitely slow in some respects, but it got the job done. Seems like I had to use GSAK to add hints to the data I transferred to the 40. Any caveats between the PN-60 and GSAK? To my shame, it pooped out because I hadn't used it since a vacation in Summer 2013, and the batteries corroded. Plan to do some last ditch troubleshooting to make sure it is dead, but didn't have time pre-trip on Friday. Don't use alkaline batteries.
  10. Every year we used to do a walking tour of the French Quarter in N.O. bringing out of towners to find the caches....one year we had over 50 people and the large group actually hid the cache finding. If you are alone you will be " stealth " caching which is not fun for many. As a CO be prepared for lots of cache maint.

  12. Agree completely. We've used NIMH for over 10 years and Eneloop since they came out......you can't beat the combo of Eneloop batteries and a MAHA charger.
  13. My recommendation if for a 62S if you can find one.
  14. I agree here.....a month ago in Florida we found the second of 3 caches on a remote gravel road....a guy stopped in a church van and knew about the caches but said the road was private ( which I doubt )....he was nice but we blew off the third cache and left. Legal or not as a CO you want to create a good geocaching experience.
  15. I don't think this has been proven in Garmin's handheld line, and I don't think Garmin has made the claim either. I think the 64 gives you an option of an external antenna, which I'm curious of high gain antennas. Going back to 2003 every unit I have owned with a quad has outperformed my patch units esp under heavy canopy.....of late the 62 does better than my Oregon. As sussamb says there are other things involved, still I think my 60 CSx which has older hardware is better than my Oregon under canopy and I think its because of the quad.
  16. I prefer the forums.....just yesterday I noticed WIKI sites regarding 62 series and Oregon firmware and hard resets are gone.....something about subscriptions expired......good thing I saved the forum links.
  17. Very seldom.....I wait until I feel there are issues with the cache. They get moved and many times I can't find them anyway...then I leave a throwdown.
  18. Ditto. The 62S was a fairly short leap from the trusty 60CSX that I wore out. I'm happy to have added full paperless capabilities, easy transfer of field notes to the website, and a greater storage capacity for geocaches (5000 instead of 1000). The free, routable Open Street Maps are a welcome relief from the expensive proprietary Garmin maps. The 62S had a learning curve but it was surmountable. It can be ornery to configure and load with maps and caches, but once you get going, you're good. Watch your batteries, though. You get far less warning before the unit quits due to low batteries, compared to the 60CSX. I agree....the 62S is the way to go.
  19. I cached in Europe with a family that wasn't interested but I was allowed to find a few. Print out everything on all 7 caches including map, hint, etc. ,then either use the GPS suggestion you have or use the above phone advice.....but bring your printouts.
  20. Nope. We don't, as they were our favorites. We wouldn't remove it just to bank points for others. I agree.
  21. I agree.....in a day of increased numbers and declining quality we give a favorite to ALL ammo cans as well as any others that rise above average and we still have hundreds of favorites to hand out.
  22. We all cache a little different, but for my use almost none of the things you mentioned after paperless would be anything I would use.(except battery saver mode.) I don't put 50 or 100 caches into the GPS at a time, and I like to delete the ones I find as soon as I find them. I hate having to connect to the computer to delete caches, and I hate that the caches in the GPS are deleted when I load new ones. (I know the latter can be avoided by loading the caches as files, something else I need to learn. ) I am not putting the 62s down, I am sure for most users it is a great step forward. It's just for me and my style of playing this game I wish I could have kept my Palm m500, and my Garmin 60CSx combo. They worked perfectly. I used the CSx - M500 combo along with a Platinum. I upgraded the M500's to Sony Clie's ( they were faster, brighter, and gave me backup ). Then we got a Nuvi 500 which was our first paperless but we were still carrying an extra device into the woods. I then got an Oregon 450 for my wife ( nice unit ) and later a 62S for me. We liked the 62 better and I now have 3. I was used to deleting them as I found them also but they show as open chests and I can load new PQ's to all my units, including my Nuvi, in about a minute. I just believe in time you'll come to really like the 62.....I'm really a dinosaur and hate change but I'm really liking mine.
