  1. If you buy the map on a mini-SD card you could use it in both but not at the same time.
  2. Two things come to mind : 1. Do a master re-set 2. Go to Garmins website and download the latest firmware.....if you're already running the latest download it again. There are also earlier firmware versions that do well, looks like I'm running 5.10.
  3. I like the idea and have been thinking of a redo on some of mine to help spur local interest. Any that are really old or special to you in some way I'd leave as is.
  4. +1 and I agree some qualifying questions are really strange.
  5. It is just a headache.....as a previous poster said I would let the TB game play out on its own, no need to intervene or interfere. I own a TB Hotel that I try to keep accurate and will check if someone requests it but I view that differently from my other regular caches. Its just another thing that pushes folks to hide micro's.
  6. +1 on not having a GPS, hard to believe ( I would have brought at least two )
  7. Just got the new ver of GSAK and had same problem....got the new token with help from the GSAK forum.
  8. I'm sure some fail and you may have been unlucky. Its just that GPS units ( not just Garmin ) are really tough units made for heavy use in the field in all conditions. A fellow cacher came into my office one day and had run over his Magellan Platinum with his truck...the screen was cracked and you could clearly see the tire tread marks but the unit operated perfect. My wife dropped a Platinum a good ways down Stone Mountain, Ga....the case popped open like an egg and the o-ring popped out....I put it back together and its never missed a beat.....for a few years now we've used Garmins ( 60 CSx, Oregon 450, 62S )and they seem tough as well having survived multiple drops, water, etc.
  9. Yep, based on the string of DNFs and an ignored NM, it's time for a NA. The only "problem" with new cachers logging a NA is that too often they jump the gun and log NA just because they couldn't find the cache. This is not one of those cases. Go for it. I agree.
  10. You got jumped on by a few who believe alike. I think what you did was great and have been doing it for 12 years...I carry logs in ziplocks on my person and several varied containers in the truck. Its a simple little game that many overthink....the repairs you did will allow finders to grab these for a good while to come. Trust me, the majority of cache owners appreciate the help and let me just say, GREAT JOB and keep up the good work.
  11. I would go with the 64....better antenna and no joystick for openers.
  12. On water they still tell you exactly where you are and you can record it ( come back to a fishing hole or hide a treasure). My current recommendation is the 64S although I'm using 3-62S units.
  13. I've never had a Garmin GPS die. The first one I bought in 1997. + 3 on this....my Garmins and also ALL of my old Magellan Meridians also still work fine....in fact in over 12 years I've never had a unit fail. To answer the question I'd recommend the Garmin 64S, they have been selling for about $250.
  14. Same here...we did 303. I don't buy 2.2 per min. though....even swapping containers and slightly running to the cache takes about a minute.......maybe if they were all a couple of feet from the car but I still doubt 2.2
  15. The current owners seem quite satisfied....this thread is older and when a unit is first introduced it has lots of bugs which are eliminated by updated firmware
  16. I think you'd better upgrade to V8 as GSAK is now V8.5.1.42. The macro is V1.3.59. You might find things not working as expected in the "ancient" V7.xxx as there have been a lot of changes (newer version of database, API,...) Yeah, I've been wanting to but the older you get the more you don't like change.....my ver of GSAK runs perfectly.
  17. How do I pull up that screen in GSAK ? As in that post ... GarminExport macro Is that in ver 7.7.4.36 ?
  18. How do I pull up that screen in GSAK ?
  19. By the way where did " power " come from ? To add a little discouragement they could be called " diarrhea " trails....lots of movement in a short period of time. "Power" seems to put a positive spin on it.
  20. What unit did you buy ? Regarding interface, the computer see's the newer GPS units as drives and you can drag / drop to the various directories etc. Its a direct interface unlike my iPhone where you're constantly forced to use Apples iTunes and other proprietary B.S. in Apples never ending quest of squeezing money from its customers.
  21. Mostly its learning something new. I've been using dedicated GPS units for over 12 years now and on the last few new models I bought I didn't even need a manual everything seemed so intuitive. A couple years ago I started using iPhones and its been a real pain....some things are intuitive but I'm still learning functions.
  22. Helps? Its the only way I cache. GPS units have been worth every penny, but many newer cachers go the cell phone only route. Each device type has its strengths, and some cachers do make use of both. The eTrex 20 is a fine choice if you decide you want to try it the GPS way. Just be aware it doesn't come out of the box with the good maps pictured on the ads. I agree....I've used about everything and prefer a handheld GPS. We currently use the 62S unit. I personally prefer a unit with a 3 axis compass that always points to the cache even when walking slow or climbing....the etrex 20 does not have this feature, the etrex 30 does. That said I've only read good things about the 20 on this forum. As said, all the units come with a worthless base map.
  23. The links above are not working....read my post in this thread. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=329418&st=0&gopid=5469256entry5469256
  24. I've posted this in the past : Amen to this one....I have lost test instruments and electronics over the years.EVERYTHING I own that takes batteries has low discharge NIMH....for GPS, cameras, and other critical items I use these : http://www.thomasdis...ies_p_2927.html For clocks, remotes, toys, etc. I use these : http://www.thomasdis...ies_p_2252.html This is my all time favorite charger : http://www.thomasdis...lay_p_2559.html I have a couple of these for traveling and they work fine : http://www.thomasdis...ger_p_1105.html In addition to being a GPS junkie I'm a battery / charger junkie and over the years have tried everything.....I have drawers full of product and no telling what I have thrown away. I've born the expense and done the testing so save yourself the brain damage and get the above. I will say I used MAHA NIMH reguler batteries for years with no problems but the Eneloops are a cut above. The weak link of rechargeable batteries has always been the charger.....I've used MAHA ( I own every one they make )for many years with great results.
