  1. for me it's all about the hunt. for you, whatever works is fine. frequently tnln. see you out there. -harry
  2. hi jon and miki, just a note to commend the s.c. state parks people. have never had anything but positive experiences caching in s.c. wish n.c. (my state) parks were as user friendly. good luck. -harry
  3. i don't know about all the states but here in n.c. the land doesn't necessarily have to be posted to get you in trouble if you are trespassing. local laws prevail that state you have to have written permission to be on the land in some counties. i know of no place that says if it isn't posted you are welcome to trespass. as a land owner i would certainly give the benefit of the doubt to the described scenario, but understand the frustration of the landowner if he has been repeatedly run over by people trespassing on his property. agree that posting parking coords in this case would help. harry
  4. have to agree with the bassoonpilot. if it looks dangerous to you, don't go there! whether to seek or don't seek is a personal decision and shouldn't be made for me by anyone else. feel free to post a warning in your post if you want, but leave the decision to cache or not cache with the individual. harry
  5. only ones i won't go to are locationless caches. just my personal decision, but i absolutely don't like 'em. otherwise i like a variety of challenges. makes the game forever new. harry
  6. read about it in adventure magazine. had been using gps for about 3 yrs as an aid to backcountry nav. neat game. harry
  7. ditto. aggravating for sure. jeremy will rectify things if you email him. harry
  8. hi, the keys are a great place to kayak in. my son and i took our boats to the keys a couple of years ago and had a great time. since we took our own craft i can't remember the name of any rental places but i do remember there being a gracious plenty of them up and down the keys. as for caches the cache map of florida shows all the ones in the keys and there don't seem to be a huge amount to choose from. perhaps you could make a sweep! hope you have a great trip. harry
  9. congrats to the leaders. you know, it's all about time. take for instance geo13, they are a husband and wife team of retirees who love to travel in their fifth-wheel motorhome. their children gave them a gpsr last christmas and to show them how to use it i (son-in-law) took them to find a geocache. wellll, they loved it and on their most recent trip they left n.c. in january and cached their way through the south, midwest, and mid-atlantic states until october! such a great sport/game for all. i think the most important aspect of the sport though is not to become caught up in the numbers and try to enjoy the moment. see you guys out there. harry
  10. definitely pokeweed! young tender leaves are edible and were eagerly sought in the spring by southern settlers craving greens and their vitamins after a winter of lack. berries and stems are toxic. berries provide long lasting food source for birds and mammals such as racoons and are available throughout the winter down here in n.c. agree that stains from berries are tough to remove from light colored clothing. harry
  11. not IT. registered nurse in critical care. lifelong love of the outdoors. bought gpsr in 97 in preparation for canoe trip in everglades national park. geocaching gave me even more excuses to get out and about (though my wife would say i already have more than enough). harry
  12. for land nav i certainly agree that utm/mgrs is the more user friendly format, esp. since many usgs and all dod maps are grided for utm/mgrs. sure to catch on if more people learn the system.
