  1. Great feedback EScout. It appears that the basemap from the actual 310/110 is locked to the individual unit. I suspect that the 110 may also work with this 310 conversion. If you care to be the guinea pig, you could try the same procedure with your 110. I also suspect that the 110 basemap would still work with that unit as the serial number doesn't change. Would be an interesting experiment. If it does work as planned, a 110 - 310 conversion is one cheap 310....hahahah
  2. A half decent basemap can be found in the Triton500 update from magellan. Just download the one you want or both, (NA or EU), then unpack the files and look in the \HDD\MAP_DATA\ folder and take the mgi file from there. Drag the map onto Vantagepoint and use the install maps button to send it to your gc/310. Or you could just place it in the \Maps\ folder of the gps manually. This is a much better basemap than the "detailed basemap" that comes with vantagepoint . "Detailed Map" from VantagePoint "Triton 500" Basemap
  3. If you load up VP with the gps connected, you can click the transfer maps button in the sync box, and send over the basemap from VP, although it doesn't seem to be very good. Yes it basically becomes a 310, no more rotary menu. Awesome!! The way the gc handled the basemap is different than the way the 310 does so the map is not compatible. If one was able to obtain the basemap from an actual 310 I suspect it would be simple to add it, but unfortunately the 310 update file does not contain this map.
  4. Glad you got it working! I have uploaded a real lame video that is poorly narrated and out of focus...hahaha
  5. Are you sure that you are using the files from 1.12?, I just double checked and the number of files I stated is correct for 1.12 You will get a reboot loop with 1.17 You should be able to see when it boots up what firmware version it is, before it reboots.
  6. I like messing around with things, and I had a bit of time to waste tonight so.... I decided to see if I could turn my GC into a 310. Well it turns out you can, and here's how... Disclaimer: The procedure I will describe works for me, but you are the one that ultimately takes the risk while crossflashing your GPS. This likely will void your warranty although as it turns out it is possible to turn it back into a GC easily enough. 1-First thing to do is make sure you are running gc firmware version 1.7, I dont know if this is important, but mine was at 1.7 when I started so I will recommend the same. 1.7 can be found here 2-Connect your GC to your computer and update to 1.7 if you haven't already, also make a backup copy of the entire contents of your GC (you can use this later to restore if you have to) 3-You will need to get a copy of the 310 firmware version 1.12 and version 1.17 Both files can be found here hosted by cacher Allory 4-Both files are a self extracting executable, but we dont want to run them we want to take the files from them, so you will need to extract their contents to a separate folder for each one using winzip or winrar etc. 5-For some reason my GC will not run 1.17, it keeps saying "restarting to improve performance" and it gets stuck in an infinite reboot loop so that is why we run 1.12, but we do need a couple files from 1.17 (at least I think we do, you could try skipping this step but it is something I did so I know that it works). In the extracted files of 1.17 go to the folder titled "copy group 5" and copy the 4 files from there into the root folder of the GC. ( the root folder is not a folder titled root, its just the main folder as in D:\ or whatever drive letter your gc shows up as, but I will call it D:\ for the rest of this) 6-Disconnect the usb and let it reboot, it will say installing update and will eventually reboot but it will still be a GC, thats good. 7-Reconnect the usb. Make sure you have a backup of every file on your GC, and then completely delete everything on it, do not unplug the usb at this point or there could be serious trouble. Create a folder in the root of the GC called "App" 8-Now we will need to browse to the extracted files of 310 v1.12, and start copying some over; -- in copy group 1, transfer the demo folder to D:\App\ -- in copy group 2, transfer all 6 files to D:\App\ -- in copy group 3, transfer the one file to D:\App\ -- in copy group 4, transfer all 7 files to D:\App\ -- in copy group 6, transfer all files to D:\App\ -- in copy group 8, transfer the folder to D:\ (this may create itself but just to be sure put it there any way) 9-Now you are ready to disconnect, it will reboot and ask for language settings etc, and may reboot once on its own, but you now have a green Magellan 310 10-The basemap is now gone, but you can reinstall a new one using the Vantage point software as it has one included. You can also install various other free maps from websites like http://www.magicmaps.ca Have fun! Side note, when you have it hooked up to vantage point it will probably tell you that a newer software version is available. Dont bother running the update as it will just fail anyway. Even though it is now a 310, the installer will throw up an error saying that it isnt a 310. If at any time you want it back to being a gc, just delete everything on it and copy your backup files back onto it.
  7. They have always used those around here (BC Canada) but its a metal tag the size of a credit card. They used to teach us in boyscouts to look at the pole if you were ever totally lost....hahaha Here is a pic of one in my yard. Coords are N49 04.879 W122 32.782 in WGS84, but that pole has been there since before '84 so my guess its its in NAD27 How exactly to decipher??? not sure but the 2232 I assume is for the W122 32 coord and the 4904 is the N49 04 coord , the rest of the numbers I am not too sure about. Edit>>>> This is exactly how to read that pole tag at my house... http://www.zoklet.net/totse/en/technology/science_technology/readpole.html
  8. I posted up some screen shots awhile ago. This should help you figure it out. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=282263
  9. Nice little write-up! Since you are up to learning new tricks, goto setup--> display--> screen capture--> ON Then if you tap the power button it will take a screen shot of the gps. Pics can be found in the Garmin\scrn\ folder of the unit. This makes it easier to show what is displayed on the gps, instead of taking a picture of it. In no way am I trying to belittle your post, just thought I would throw in that tip in case you didn't know about it.
  10. I guess the bigger question is how did you get so low on storage space if your keep your maps on the sd card. If you are using a mac, make sure you empty the .trashes folder.
  11. Try marking a waypoint, then editting those coords. A goto to a waypoint should work for you.
  12. Yes you can use vantagepoint (a free download) or just directly put your PQ .gpx files in the geocaches folder.

  14. Plus : Its awesome! Minus : Its awesomely huge!
  15. Sure you can save them as either kml or kmz, and convert to gpx here ----> http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input?convert_format=gpx
  16. I see what you mean. You are given those bulk options if they are waypoints, not as geocaches. You would need to strip their geocache info and import them as waypoints if you wanted to change their properties in bulk, but performing those extra steps somewhat defeats the purpose of using basecamp.
  17. Also the nuvi 500/550, for those keeping track.
  18. You are only permitted 6000 API calls / user / day with GSAK, you would use that up pretty quick. The link dfx supplied should work ok for you, just add a couple more relevant keywords to narrow the search such as "nevada" or w/e you need to do to reduce the results.
  19. Only the mass storage part is new, all others were contained in 5.30, likley that issue was created in 5.30 hence why they removed all mention of it.
  20. There have already been a couple threads on this issue, here is one... http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=289136
  21. I don't agree with that statement. Just the southern half (below 60 degrees) of Topo Canada V4 is over 3gb, toss in City Nav NA 2012 at 1.6gb and a few Birdseye images and you can easily hit 8gb and we have no pictures yet. I have a 16gb card in my montana, with about 14gb used Of course it does depend on the expected usage and desires of the owner, but a blanket statement like that is a bit erroneous.
  22. They have a newer model black XX battery that are 2500 mAh http://ncix.com/prod...nufacture=Sanyo Although this deal is hard to pass up ....$15 for 4AA and 2AAA w/ charger http://www.ncix.com/...yo&promoid=1141 Edit: here is the product page http://us.sanyo.com/Battery-Products/XX-AA-4-Pack
  23. You can hook it up to your computer and delete all the files in the garmin/gpx/ folder of the gps and sd card, and also delete the geocache_visits.txt file in the /garmin/ folder of the device. You can then send your new pq to the unit by dragging and dropping into the /garmin/gpx/ folder or let gsak put it on there for you.
  24. Hahahah, I know this is OT but clearly you haven't spent much time in a tractor in the last 10 years.
