  2. As for renaming the PDA between the desktop and laptop, I have a XP desktop and a Vista laptop. My PDA syncs just fine on both units. Just have the user accounts setup correctly and your okay. Jim Exactly, in the setup dialogue for the Palm it will ask what name your PDA is. It MUST be the same name that you've given the Palm. Now, if I could just get my Palm from crashing my computer every other time I try to Hot Sync!!!!!!! Grigorii Rasputin http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  3. You're not quitting, I hope??? Just changing trail name, maybe?? Grigorii Rasputin http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  4. Firstly, WELCOME TO GEOCACHING!!!!!! We are happy and honored to have you with us!!! Secondly, I love the avatar! I had a black Lab for 11 years. He looked just like that little guy! With my Garmin GPSMap60cx (and the premium membership) you'll have this kind of information from a GPX file: File location, description, hints, and past logs from other cachers (which can be invaluable if it is a tough cache!). However, what you can actually store on the GPS is another matter. My GPSr doesn't really store anything more than location, cache name, uhhhhhh, and that's about it. The newer Garmins (newer and more expensive) can hold just about everything that's on the cache page itself (provided you have the premium membership) I hope this helps! See you on the trails! 5. GPS 'bounce' is quite common, especially if you have heavy tree canopy over you. It always gets better after fall. There have been times in the Spring and Summer after a heavy rainfall that my GPS will jump around by as much as 80 feet! I try a couple of things: Try entering the 'suspect' area from different directions. Even with a lot of bounce, you'll see you move into the same general area. Next, as you get to the last 100 feet, quit looking at the GPS, then start looking for the 'likely suspects'. Start thinking, "Okay, where would I hide this cache, if it were mine?" Very often, you'll be correct. I hope this helps!!!! Grigorii Rasputin http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  6. Skip the maps. Go caching! Grigorii Rasputin, http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  7. Never apologize for asking for help!!! The previous posts are all great information. Be sure to check around before buying, though. Thankfully, the Internet can save you a bunch of money when shopping. I bought my GPS from Amazon.com. The retailers know this CHRISTmas shopping season is going to be very ugly for them, too. So you should be able to find some great deals out there! Welcome to Geocaching!!! We're glad you're here! Grigorii Rasputin, http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  8. Cool!!! Another Geocaching addict!!! Welcome, welcome, welcome!!!! Grigorii Rasputin, http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  9. I always love these little controversies. At least, they are entertaining! Grigorii Rasputin, http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  10. Here is a link to the Cache Adoption Utility Now you have to find someone to agree to adopt your cache. Post a note on the Cache Page. Post a request here in your regional forum. Post a request to a local Geo forum. Tell your friends. Attend a local event and announce the cache is available for adoption. Good Luck. So THAT'S how it's done!!!! Thanks for the info! Grigorii Rasputin http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  11. That's just too funny!!! I love stuff like that!!! Grigorii Rasputin http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  12. "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!" DING! DING! DING! DING! We have a winner!!!! Ever in the pursuit of protecting the purity of our natural bodily fluids...... Grigorii Rasputin http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  13. I guess I would feel the need to replace it as I was the last one who touched it. That's just me. I would also hope someone would extend to me the same courtesy were it my cache that was broken. And, don't think about it as fixing someone else's cache. Think of it as an investment in our cool, amazing, dynamic sport!!! Cache Safe!! Grigorii Rasputin http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  14. WAAS on! WAAS off! Cache Safe! Grigorii Rasputin http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  15. Let's just keep things simple, okay? To WAAS or not to WAAS? It just doesn't matter... IT'S A GAME! Play the game your way, I'll play it mine, and they'll play it their way. Cache Safe! Grigorii Rasputin http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  16. Yes they are. It's like going from just antenna service on a TV to cable or even a satellite dish. Well said!!! Definitely go with the premium! Firstly, it's only $30 / year. Secondly, you are actively supporting the sport. And lastly, YES, the benefits are worth it! Go For It!!!!! Grigorii Rasputin http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  17. Hey! No, if there's no tracking number, it's pretty much just a collectible. Where did you buy the coin? You really have to be careful where you buy and what you buy. You must look for 'trackable at GC.com'. Otherwise, it's a collectible coin, and not a 'geocoin' per se. There are a lot of up and up geocoin stores online. If you stick with the ones that advertise on GC.com, you'll be okay. Grigorii Rasputin http://www.glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  18. What does 'Social Consciousness' really mean, anyway?? It usually equates to someone saying, "Give me your money." Grigorii Rasputin, My Webpage My Blog
  19. OH, CRAP!!!!! YOU WIN!!! Suddenly, caching in the Michigan winters doesn't look so bad!!!! Okay, note to self: take "geocaching in Southwest" off of my list of things to do!!! Grigorii Rasputin, My Webpage My Blog
  20. What have I learned? If you are outside of sight or sound of other people, you potentially could find yourself in a world of hurt if you get injured. So, I always have my daypack (with Camel Back) prepared as if I will have to be out overnight. Grigorii Rasputin, My Webpage My Blog
  21. Firstly, I have a Premium Geocaching membership so I can get Pocket Queries (PQs). Just these are worth the $30/year. Secondly, I use GSAK to open the GSAK files and to download them onto my GPSMap60cx. Then, I have Cachemate on my Palm 500 (Palm OS). GSAK and Cachemate work very well with each other!!!! Give my blog a look, too! Go to http://www.smittyware.com/intro/cachemate/ and http://www.smittyware.com/ppc/cachemate/. http://www.smittyware.com/ppc/cachemate/
  22. Hey, Prime Suspect! Just wanted to tell you I love your trail name!!!! Grigorii Rasputin WWW.Glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  23. Briansnat is wise beyond his years! The 60csx / 60cx is a great unit by itself, but it also has a ton of accessories for the car, too! No, you don't get the turn-by-turn directions, but I've never needed those. Garmin is a great company, too. Best of Luck! Grigorii Rasputin WWW.Glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  24. WOW!!!! You bought that for your husband????? Do you have a sister???? Do you have any friends or family that would let you use their computer to download the maps??? If that's all you have to do, it's an option. Best of Luck!!!!! Grigorii Rasputin WWW.Glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
  25. WELCOME TO GEOCACHING!!!!!! I have a unique perspective; I'm a geocacher AND a cop. Firstly, I love caching at night because the chances of getting muggled are significantly less than in the middle of the day. I always take an LED flashlight with me. Using a red lens on the flashlight will reduce the range at which the light can be seen by other people, and make it less contrasting against the darkness. If you are seen at night, however, you are far more likely to be considered 'suspicious' than if you were seen in the same area in the middle of the day. "Aye, there's the rub" as a brilliant man once said. However, I'm also cognizant about not being somewhere I am not legally entitled to be. For instance, if a park says, "Closed at Sunset", that's it. Trespassing is trespassing. If you are approached by the police, however, be 100% honest with them about what you are doing. As a cop, I can handle the truth. It's the lies that drive me nuts. Cops are also GREAT lie detectors. So, you don't have to worry about the police 'muggling' you, you just have to worry about them arresting you! It would be a great idea to print off some of the geocaching pamphlets that are out there, just in case. Grigorii Rasputin WWW.Glass-cockpit.org http://grigoriirasputin.wordpress.com
