  1. There isn't really a glitch with 2.7. It's just not as user friendly as 2.8 i.e. there's more hoops to jump through to load multiple files.

If you're upgrading to CR 2.0 and FW 2.8, you have nothing to worry about. Your scenario will be handled with ease. The child waypoints and caches will all be combined into one GPX file for each PQ you set up so if you have PQs for 8 regions you'll have 8 GPX files loaded on the PN's sd card. 1 of those files can be open and in use at a time. When you want to change to another file you just open the one you want and it will first save any changes to the one that's closing.

You'll still need to keep each PQ below the 1000 mark (including child waypoints).

  2. ...use the File>Export>GPX/Loc function to create a GPX of your combined caches/child waypoints [ib]and then[/b] simply drag & drop the GPX file onto the SD card of your 60.
Why not skip a step and just save it directly to the SD card out of GSAK?

Good point Lee. Old habits got in the way of my thinking. Yes the GPX file can be saved directly from "File>Export" to the 60's sd card.

  3. There are multiple ways to load PQs to your PN-60. Cache Register 2.0 will be released by Delorme soon and it will support the PN-60 and PN-30, 40 that have the 2.8 FW update. You can also use GSAK, however until updates are made to add the PN-60 to the direct "send to GPS" menu, I would avoid that method of loading. Instead, use the File>Export>GPX/Loc function to create a GPX of your combined caches/child waypoints and then simply drag & drop the GPX file onto the SD card of your 60. You can also drag & drop an unzipped GPX file that comes directly from the GC.com onto the SD card but the catch is, since the cache file and child waypoint file are separate, they will be stored on the card that way and you can only have one file open in internal memory at any given time. Not a big issue for some people.

Of course you can also load PQs using Topo NA 9 and the new sync feature. If you look under the map files tab, you'll notice a tab named "geocaching". This works much like Cache Register. Click on that tab, log in to your GC account and then choose auto update. You'll see you now have your PQs listed to the right. Check the ones you'd like to send to the PN and click geocaching>update. You'll see the PQs populated on the map. Now click the Sync button at the top of the screen. After sync does it's analysis, you can click on "Project Contents" and see everything that's ready to sync to the PN including your PQs. Just press the sync button again and you're good to go. When you go back to the PN you'll have do do the File>Open again to choose which PQ you want loaded in internal memory.

  4. If I understand your post correctly, you expect to be able to use your Ique city maps on a new Garmin.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but you won't be able to do that. Garmin policy is purchased maps are tied to one device. Purchase a new Garmin unit and you'll have to purchase new maps from Garmin or rely on what's available for free on a site such as GPSFiledepot.

  5. If your coords are as much as 500 ft off You may have inadvertantly changed the datum setting on your 40.

Menu>Device Setup>Units: Datum Primary should be set to WGS84.

One other possibility. Make sure when you mark the coords with the push pin button that you don't have the cursor on the 40 panned to another spot otherwise the coords recorded will be for that spot rather than your current location.

  6. There are people that don't want the extra coordinates, or want the ability to ignore them. However, if you use GSAK, the file will open the main and the child points as one zip file.

I'm aware GSAK can combine the 2 but thought it would be valuable to have the option of having them combined without the use of another program. I know there are some that don't care about the child waypoints although I don't quite understand why cachers wouldn't want a quick easy way to route to a cache's parking coords without having to manually enter them.

Perhaps an option would be to add a check box in the PQ setup screen offering the ability to have the files combined or separate.

  7. I'm sure this has probably been mentioned before but the search function here isn't the best.

I would really like to see PQs contain the geocaches and associated child waypoints as one GPX file rather than two. I'm not a software guru so I don't know how difficult it would be pull off. I'd love to hear other opinions, negative or positive.

  8. If you can afford it, yes go for the 60. It has a nicer easier to use UI and much better battery life.

If you do go with the 40, you should get a coupon in the box for an upgrade to topo 9 for just the cost of shipping. If you don't get the coupon call Delorme directly and they will give you instructions on what you need to send them for the upgrade i.e. receipt copy and bar code from box. The upgrade to topo 9 is very important because it gives you the ability to update the 40's firmware to 2.8 which brings some nice new features.

Also: Both the 60 and 40 come with more than basemaps. Topo has detailed maps of the US, Canada and Mexico. Those maps are also routable. You also get 5 region disks of detailed maps that are already "cut" which means they can be loaded directly to the 60/40 without having to even use the topo software.

  9. Im still having this dilemma. Can I get some help plz?

If you are using Firefox 3.6 the plugin is broken. It works with Internet Explorer though...

I believe that's only true if they are using a Delorme GPS receiver.

  10. I was set on 1.0 already. The 'waypoins' menu is the only way to access the GPX files. They come in as red pins and are waypoints with no info other than GC number and location. I reset to 1.0.1 thrn back to .0 and will try again, but I doubt the mwnu on my PN-40 will have 'geocache' on it.

So Minimike2, You gonna let us know how things went? A lot of people have been using 2.7 and have geocaches on their device. If you're still not seeing them, something else is wrong.

  11. FW 2.7 just seems to handle everything as simple waypoints. I am a geocacher.

If caches are only showing up as waypoints, you probably need to set your GPX preference on the website. Follow these instructions and then rerun your PQs.

This corrects an issue created when Groundspeak added GPX 1.0.1 attribute functionality a while back. The PN-40 does not play well with GPX 1.0.1 and prefers the original GPX 1.0.

1- go to GC.com and click on YOUR PROFILE

2- then click on Your Account Details

3- scroll to the bottom of that page to Your Preferences

4- if it is set to 1.0.1, skip to step 10

    5- click on change

6- find GPX Version Preference and change it to 1.0.1

    7- click on Save Changes

    8- click on change again

9- if the GPX Version Preference setting now says 1.0, go back to step 6 (yes really)

10- find GPX Version Preference and change it to 1.0

    11- click on Save Changes

12- re-run the PQs that have the version problem, the new PQs should be OK

  12. Can you list the added capabilities of FW 2.8? Skip the one button sync, that is one that doesn't work with Topo 8.

I did load FW 2.7 on my PN-40 but can not find the means to use it for swapping GPX files between internal memory and the CD card.

    1. We won't know the full added capabilities of 2.8 until it's released.

    2. I assume you need instructions for Topo 8 and not GSAK. Since I use GSAK these instructions are my best recallection.

Note: Start with a clean slate, no caches or waypoints in internal memory of your PN-XX

    1. Unzip the PQ.

    2. Drag-n-drop the main geocache gpx file and child waypoint gpx file onto the map screen of Topo 8

    3. Click on the "Exchange" button (PN-40 icon at top of Topo screen).

    4. Select the GPX files you just brought into Topo from the left side of the screen and click send (one at a time). The PQ is now in internal memory

    5. On the PN-40 go to menu>waypoints>menu>file>save as and give the PQ a name. It's now saved to the SD card.

    6. Delete all geocaches/waypoints. Don't worry, the file will remain on the SD, it's just removed from internal memory.

    7. Repeat all steps to load another PQ and continue the process for as many PQs as you can fit on the SD (lots).

To open files from SD card: menu>waypoints>menu>file>open

  13. OK, I posted this in Delorme's forums also. Just seeking an answer.

IF i somehow get FW 2.8 and install it on my PN-40-

Then I will be ables to load a PQ into Topo 8 and then transfer it to my PN-40? It will only go into the GPX file in internal memeory, not to the SD? I can then move the internal GPX to the SD card and put another PQ into internal memory? Through several iterations of this procaess I can have multiple GPX files of 1,000 caches on the SD card and swap them in and out of the internal memory?

If all of that above is possible, then where can I download FW 2.8?

If you don't care about any of the other possible new capabilities that 2.8 will bring then there's no need to update to it. FW 2.7 already provides the capability you just described.
