  1. Hello everyone,

I spend a-lot of time out in the woods,,A-LOT and my wife and mother would like me to have a spot communicator. I am looking for a used one, and would even be willing to work out a part trade for one,

The Spot Communicator is the small black spot device designed to work alongside the Delorme PN-60w. On it's own, the only function it's capable of is sending an SOS. Your not likely to find a used one without the PN-60w.

The orange Spot I and Spot II (note: no "Communicator")devices however, are designed to work on their own and not only send SOS but predefined alert and check-in messages. I've seen Spot I's going for as little as $60 on Ebay but remember, there is also an annual subscription fee for the service no matter which unit you use.

  2. ...I also don't like that it required an update to the new fimware which makes my Topo 8 and my map subscription useless. So for anybody who uses the Topo 7 or 8 software to transfer maps and sat imagery to their unit, Cache Register is not free. It will cost you the price of a new copy of Topo 9.

Total lack of respect for the customer on the part of DeLorme. Here is a free upgrade with some nice new features, but it will cost you $100 to make your unit fully functional once you've done the free upgrade.

Briansnat, you might want to do a little homework. Firmware 2.8 does not affect map transfers using Topo 8.

    Per Delorme's website:

    Waypoints/Geocaches

You must create a waypoint or geocache file on the device before transferring data.

Once there is an open waypoint or geocache file, you can use the Exchange dialog to move data to the opened file.

The desktop application interacts with only the opened file.

    Tracks

To transfer tracks to the device first you must export them as .gpx files. To do this, click on the Draw tab in Topo 8, then click the File... button, choose the track layer you want to send to your PN-40 and click Export. Type in a file name, choose a destination to save the file to, make sure to change the Save as type drop-down to GPX file, and click Save.

Connect your device to your computer, turn it on and press MENU > Device Setup > Connect to Computer > and change Use GPS to Open SD Card. Copy the .gpx file that was just created during the export from Topo 8 to the 'tracks' folder on the SD card. Once the track file has been moved to the SD card, select Use GPS on the device and from the Tracks Page go to MENU > Open > File to open the track.

When you view the Tracks list in the Exchange dialog, you will see the Active Track and the opened track file.

    Routes

Route transfer is the same for Topo USA 8 and Topo North America 9 (there is no difference with 2.8 firmware).

    Maps

Map transfer is the same for Topo USA 8 and Topo North America 9 (there is no difference with 2.8 firmware).

And here's a little more info about the topic from the Delorme Forums.

  3. How about this:

    1)Same as what you did.

    2)Same as what you did.

3)Go back to stage 1 and using your GPSr, select the waypoint for stage 2 and navigate to it. Before taking a step, read what the GPSr says the distance and bearing are to the waypoint.

Note: You could also stay at stage 2 and follow the same procedure (navigating to stage 1) taking into account your bearing will now be 180 degrees different.

  4. .....but my nuvi500 doesn't recognise them AS geocaches and I cannot see them on the map UNTIL I have selected one!

That is why we are saying you shouldn't use the macro. You're giving up capabilities by using it. The macro is meant for Nuvis which don't have dedicated geocaching features. If you simply create a GPX file from GSAK and drop it in the geocaches folder on the Nuvi you'll get the features you want.

  5. Cabela's still has the Nuvi 500 marked down to $179.99 in their Bargain Cave at this link. They're also offering free shipping for orders over $99.99. Not a bad deal.

The 500 is basically an automotive GPS but with a more durable waterproof case, a replaceable battery and a dedicated geocaching mode. It's not the best form factor for out the trail but it's much better than handhelds for road routing.

  6. There may still be some confusion. You can use GSAK to load the Nuvi 500 with caches but you don't need a macro to do it. Once you have your GSAK database massaged the way you want it, use the File>Export>GPX/LOC File option to save your GPX directly to the folder location Chrysalides mentioned. You can save GPX files to both internal memory and the SD card. I assume the folder would be called the same in either location.

I'm not sure what the GPX file limits are on the 500.

And by the way, Windows 7 32 bit should work fine.

  7. Don't see much difference in swapping logs along the trail and just taking along 1200 film cans with pre-stamped logs ready to take their place. I have no problem with people wanting to play the game this way but I really think it should be called something other than geocaching.

  8. I don't see a problem with it. The stores are legal businesses and, if you stop and think about it, it is an activity that virtually everyone enthusiastically partakes of a few times in their life. Think about where you came from... :)

It's also important to keep in mind that not everyone shares the same flavour of morality. Personally, I'm more offended by gun shops than adult stores, but I accept that many folks (especially our neighbours to the south) don't share my opinion. :)

I say, live and let live. Live by your own personal moral and ethical code without trying to impose it on others who live by a different code. :D

Give that man/woman/alien thing......whatever it is, a cigar.

  9. I'm going to propose you ask your question over here where there is a larger group of knowledgeable PN users to offer help. Please provide detail on exactly how you are loading PQs to your PN60.

As for your last sentence, sorry but I don't understand exactly what you're saying. Many people have been caught thinking their caches were gone when they were in fact just switched over to showed logged caches only. It's a common mistake which is why tech support would have asked that.

Edit: I see you did post it on the Delorme forums but we still need more detail as to how the caches are being loaded.

  10. I use a combination PN60w and Nuvi. Using GSAK, I have no problems loading PQs onto both quickly. I also have a Droid Incredible with the Groundspeak app. While it's a great phone and very convenient for a quick urban cache or two, it doesn't hold a candle to the dedicated handheld and Nuvi combo for serious caching.

  11. So your first post in the forums is after you've gone through all that frustration. If you were new to this and had never owned a GPS, perhaps a visit to the forums first would have saved a lot of aggravation. People here would have been happy to provide GPS recommendations within your budget and also would have provided ideas on the best places to buy (Sports Authority would not likely be on that list). You also would have been advised to search for regular size containers and avoid micros (especially those on tanks) until you had found a few.

Having said all that, I find cetain details of your story pretty hard to believe.
