  1. While updating to SP3 is a good idea, it's not the OP's immediate problem. As stated before, it's known that the Delorme "Send To GPS" plug-in does not currently work with FF 3.6. Updating the OS won't solve that problem. The Garmins and Delormes are not alike on this issue.

  2. As Bosn Ski's link points out, if you upgraded to firefox 3.6, "send to GPS" will not work. You can go back to 3.5 or switch to IE and it should work fine. Delorme is aware of the problem with 3.6 but hasn't provided a solution yet.

Since I am not the most computer literate person. How do I switch back to 3.5.

You might try this: Firefox 3.5.9

I don't run firefox so I can't help beyond that.

  3. If you've got CR, GSAK isn't needed if you want to load a PQ direct into the unit. Just do it all right within CR. That would have bypassed the problem.

Since a fieldnotes file already existed in the PN's internal memory, switching to CR didn't initially help because he was just adding more notes to an already corrupted file that GC wouldn't take. Until that file with the mising cache IDs is cleared, no method would work.

If you are using the send to GPS function in GSAK and have it set to the pn-30 you should have the correct cache names in your geocache list.

I had a similar issue to what you are describing when I would export my data from GSAK to a gpx file and drag that to the memory card. But when using the send direct to gps in the GPS menu it works perfectly.

Even using the "send to" function in GSAK won't work if you don't have the "%code" tag listed in the waypoints name line.

  4. Yes, cache id is the "GC" number. It should be listed at the top when you view the cache comments.

You said that you were able to see the fieldnotes.txt file on the PC. What steps did you take to do that?

With the PN connected to the PC:

    1. From the Geocaches Page, press MENU, highlight "Upload Field Notes" and press ENTER.

    2. After a few seconds the PN's internal drive (EM_USERMAPS) will show up in windows explorer.

    3. Open the em_usermaps folder and you should see the "FieldNotes.txt" file.

    4. Delete it.

  5. Did you say earlier that when you view the cache details on the PN, you don't see the cache ID listed? I'm talking about viewing the cache comments with the description, not just the basic info you see when you highlight and select a cache. If using CR, the cache id is a required component and must be there otherwise you would get the very result you're getting, field notes won't upload. I suspect the caches you were viewing came from GSAK where you possibly have a setting wrong and the GC code isn't getting loaded on the PN. I would clear all caches off the device and delete the fieldnotes.txt file. Then load a small PQ from CR, enter a cache on the device as found and try uploading again.

The fact that you said you could see the fieldnotes.txt file on the PC indicates the PN is not at fault.

  6. Waterproof IS still a problem. How many smart phones are rated IPX7? As for the shock proof sturdier case, sure it would be easy but the extra bulk of a stronger more durable case would be a big turn off to all those other millions of potential customers that want thin and light weight and could care less about geocaching.

  7. Hello, I am having difficulty uploading field notes from PN-30 to GC.com field notes page. My computer does recognize the fieldnotes.txt file on the PN-30, however when I select upload, GC.com replies with "0" field notes found. Are you aware of any tricks to getting this working. Someone told me that I need to set up as map transfer, rather than data transfer when PN30 is connected. I have tried both methods with same unsuccessful result.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may provide

This is copied from the Delorme instructions tab on "Upload Your Field Notes File" page:

To upload Field Notes from your DeLorme Earthmate PN-40:

    1. Plug your PN-40 into your computer with a USB cable.

    2. From the Geocaches Page, press MENU, highlight "Upload Field Notes" and press ENTER.

    3. Click "Browse" on this web page and go to the PN-40's internal drive (EM_USERMAPS).

    4. Select the file named "FieldNotes.txt" and click "Upload" on this page to upload your Field Notes.

    5. On your PN-40, press the ENTER button to return to normal GPS use.

    6. We recommend that you delete the "FieldNotes.txt" file on the PN-40 once your Field Notes are uploaded.

Once the Field Notes are uploaded you can return to the Field Notes list page to start logging your finds.

Process is the same for the PN-30.

  8. The venture hc is not one of the units that supports paperless caching. To get all the cache page info to show on the unit, you would need a Garmin Colorado, Dakota, Oregon, Any of the Delorme Models, Any of the new Lowrance Endura models, or some of the magellan models.

Having said that, you can get an inexpensive PDA and download the cachemate program and load all the cache info to the pda to use in combination with your venture hc.

  9. If you can hold out awhile, Delorme will be coming out with the PN-60W GPSr which includes the Spot satellite communicator which would take care of several of your needs in one package. I'ts currently scheduled to hit the shelves in June. Here's the link to the Amazon.com preorder page which has some info about it. Also, here's the link to the Delorme web log describing it which may provide some more details.

  10. Not sure that reviewer had a clue as to what they were doing. Yes you can load multiple caches on to the 30 and 40 using the topo software that comes with the unit, GSAK, or the $10 cache register widget you can purchase as a download from delorme. You will want to become a premium member to take advantage of the pocket query feature to get multiple cache listings in one shot. You can navigate from cache to cache via road routing or hiking mode. The only difference between the 2 units is that the 30 does not have the electronic compass or barometric altimeter features but if you watch for deals on Amazon or Walmart, the price difference is so small sometimes that you might as well go with the 40.

  11. Same problem here with DeLorme, mine stopped working in Firefox after updating, although still works in IE.

    Reinstalling doesn't help.

This is like my car breaking down and having to ride the neighbor kid's bicycle to work! <_<

Did you read the other posts in the thread about the delorme plug-in not working with firefox 3.6 and that it's a known problem delorme is working on? Earlier versions of firefox or IE are your only options right now.

  12. I'm still not sure how you were ever able to see the PN as a drive letter while in data exchange mode but try this:

With the PN connected, turned on and set to data exchange; go menu>geocaches>menu>upload field notes. You should here the ka-ching or whatever sound it makes and a few seconds later you should see em_usermaps show up in win explorer.

  13. I just saw that you said you were able to send caches one at a time so I doubt there's a cable problem. Have you installed the Topo software on your PC? If so, plug in the 40 and power it up. Start Topo. Unzip a PQ. Drag and drop the GPX file onto the map screen of Topo. Click on the exchange tab (PN40 icon) at top. On the left of the exchange box you'll see the GPX file in topo. Highlight it and click on the send button. If the file is successfully transfered to the PN40 then the PC is communicating with the 40 just fine.

Using the GSAK option as posted above would also confirm this.

  14. It's possible your cable started acting up. It's been a common problem with the PNs. Try plugging into the rear USB ports if it's a desktop or try all other ports if it's a laptop. The cable has been known to work fine on one PC and not another or from the rear ports and not the front. You might also try a powered usb hub as that has helped several others. The theory being the power wire has a suspect connection in the cable so the USB 5 volts is dropping too much by the time it gets to the PN. A powered hub would likely give you a better starting voltage so the drop across the cable wouldn't hurt as much. It, of course, would still mean the cable needs replaced. Call delorme and explain the situation and they'll send you another cable.
