  1. I like the idea, but it should not be limited to Canada. Ghost Towns of Anywhere would be better.
  2. here is a link to the very first posting of a geocache. No fancy websites back then! http://groups.google.com/group/sci.geo.sat...xy=2000&rnum=10 a day Earlier, Dave Ulmer (first geocache placre) posted this http://groups.google.com/group/sci.geo.sat...=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
  3. if you want a gps that can use scanned raster image maps, like real USGS quads or airphotos, like from terraserver you will need to spend a few thousand dollars to get a survey grade GIS model from Thales or Trimble. They are Windows CE based and come with the $600 ARCpad GIS software installed. http://www.trimble.com/geoxt.shtml This one has SUBMETER (<3 foot) accuracy, and its a ruggedized ppc too, so it will run gpxsonar for a complete paperless caching system!!! I think this one is priced in the neighborhood of $3000-5000
  4. the XL is supposed to be bigger, with a bigger screen, and 30MB internal memory. Sounds like a meridian sized 500.
  5. When magellan announced the Explorist 400/500/600 they said there would be an accesory available late this summer allowing it to take 3 AAA batteries.
  6. I noticed the same thing. no gpx file for an unapproved cache, when I got one a year ago.
  7. topo fusion is pretty cool, but I still think expertgps is more usable. If you want cool high res color photos or 3-d veiws, you can always use Google Earth. The free version will open a gpx file and plot waypoints or tracklogs too. now, if you want real GIS integration, the GIS option pack for Expertgps is very good too. It wil allow you to imort, or export Shapefiles, and georeferenced tiff or jpg images for use in other gis software, such as arcview
  8. last summer our 3 yo did several 3-6 mile hikes with us goign after caches. some with 1000+ feet of elevation gain. He walked the whole way by himself. Just go slow and have lots of snacks water.
  9. try expertgps at www.expertgps.com they have a 30 day demo, and the full version is only $60. It will do what you want and a lot more. usaphotmaps is free, and has simmilar functionality, but trust me, the $60 is worth it
  10. If you look at the posts in Adventure #12, a magellan employee says that the cache will eventually be listed at Geocaching.com as a regular cache. We have not been able to get them to eloborate on the timing or anything else.
  11. this cache http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...98-f18a6e9e3213 is in the back of some guys truck, that has a ham radio transmitting the trucks current coordinates to a website. Its currently unavailable, because the guy is on an LDS mission, but he should be back in 6 months or so. The cache is based in the Salt Lake CIty area of Utah.
  12. Follow this link to download the song. http://cohp.org/creative_concepts/creative_main.html its about County HighPointing (climbing the highest point in every county of a state). It could very well be about geocaching or benchmarking. They even disscuss hunting for a benchmark and another line says "... with Garmin as my guide..." jjb
  13. what is the 200 comment limit? Does that mean that any single POI file can only have 200 waypoints with comments?
  14. out here in the west, there are many many places where there are no survey markers on section corners. sometimes the topo maps don;t even have sections drawn in on them. Also, I've seen a lot of places where there are individual sections that contain 2 square miles, or 1/2 a square mile, instead of the usual 1. I've also seen townships that hold as few as 6 sections, instead of the usual 36. And this is without taken any correction lines into acount.
  15. No, townships, ranges, and sections are NOT tied to Lat Long. However, if you use any topo map software, or topozone.com you should be able to get the cords for the section corners
  16. an article on the importance (or NOT) of the antenna type. Its more important you know how to hold the gps. http://gpsinformation.net/main/gpsant.htm
  17. $144 wil get you a brand new garmin GPS 60 (not to be confused with the garmin gpsMAP 60c). Its a brand new model. it doesn;t do maps, but it has gamrmins games and the geocaching mode. It has a quad-helix antenna. If your on a budget, and want the good antenna, go for this unit. http://www.offroute.com/product/view_produ...609&CatID=14179
  18. you should be able to find a Magellan Meridian (yellow or green) for less than $100. It has a quad-helix antenna, which is supposed to be better under tree cover.
  19. http://earth.google.com/index.html very cool
  20. what about file extensions for route files or track files? again expertgps is giving routes a .wpt and tracks a .trk is this right. And, fyi, I checked the ascii, and its matching up, I just think expertgps is giving different file extensions. Also, is there any advantage to having geocaches in separate files from POIs? thanks
  21. I'm thinking of gettgin an explorist 600 , and have some questions. I hope someone can help. I've read the manual, but still have some questions. I know the internal memory can only hold 500 waypoints. If I have a poi file on an sd card, can it have more than 500 pois in it? What are the file extensions used by the magellan explorist? GSAK outputs a poi file with a .UDT, while expertgps puts one out with a .WPT They seem to have the same ascii text structure, but just different file name extensions. which is the right one? Is there a limit to how many geocaches can fit in a geocache file? Is it possible to copy a poi or route file from the internal memory to the sd card, and back, without using a computer? thanks
  22. here's one, 6 miles from shore on the bottom of the Great Salt lake http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...3e-f06565740d84
