  1. The newest version of expertgps wil export to csv or a spreadsheet. From teh waypoint list window, just highlight the waypoints you want to export, and the right click, and select copy. Open excell or notepad. paste in there. done
  2. I have a SUUNTO vector and it works great. but... why not get a gps with built in compass, like the etrex vista???
  3. The flap on the back is for the serial port, which wil let you upload & download files. You can get a cable for $16 from GPSgeek. <link removed by moderator>
  4. Heres another geocaching related enhancement. How about the ability to have found caches show up in the regular cache lists when searching for them.
  5. Goldenhawk. DO you have a LOT of track files on your gps. I do, about 60. Until I put them in individual folders, It took forever to get all the track info to desplay, sometimes 15 minutes. Now it goes fast, with just one track file in a folder. I think it scans all of the tracks in the folder before it will continue.
  6. Does anyone know if GPSBabel will support the new "Found" cache feature for Magellan Explorists soon? I'm told that GSAK can;t support it, until GPSBabel does. thanks jjb
  7. 1000 geocache points, and 1000 active waypoints would be nice, all with hints/comments. Garmins do it. also, it would be nice to tell the difference between a micro cache and a regular sizwed cache. Maybe they could add a M (micros) S (small) R (regular) L Large to the traditional cache icon.
  8. I Like my 500. It may not have the fancy features of the garmin's or the customizing ability, but there is something to be had for having all geocaches (with hints), benchmarks, and more for the whole state in the gps all at once.
  9. Its is a VERY large update, and adds a lot of new functionality to the program. He has been constantly updating the beta version the whole time since the last official release, so its not that we have been without updates. This update makes a great program even better.
  10. the 60cs also has an external antenna conector, while the vista does not
  11. if you go here: http://www.utahgeocachers.com/BMFiles.php you can get GPX files for every county in the state of Utah. No need to convert, its already been done.
  12. I feel the same way. I keep hearing rumors of a new garmin with SD coming next year, but no real info. I think a Vista C with SD, allowing multiple waypoint files would rock. Especially if it allowed direct opeing of GPX files, instead of a prorietary format.
  13. In my explorist, I have the waypoints for Every geocache in the state of Utah, Every Benchmark, and the locations for thousands of old mines, and a few hundred rock collecting locations. I think its about 7 MB total.
  14. I own gamins and I own an explorist. If your on a budget the explorist 210 is hard to beat. It will do maping with auto routeing. Those are things that the yellow 60 can;t even dream of doing. Also, with the built in memory, you can hold tens of THOUSANDS of waypoints, with hints. far more than any garmin will, even their best units. yes, the garmin will show more info at the same time, and is more customizable, but the memory features of the explorists are very very very usefull.
  15. I accidentaly left our etrex vista on top of the van (no case) and when driving down the road. While I was goign about 60 mph, I heard some thumping on the roof and then watched the gps go tumbling down the road. When I finally got to it, it was still running. It had a few nicks & scratches, but was otherwise ok.
  16. Also there are not enough military gps's around, and they are not very user friednly. If the militray gives him one then great. If not, at least he'll have something else he can rely on. Get him an etrex vista c and he'll be very happy.
  17. Garmin etrex Vista C. If your gonna do it, might as well do it right, especially if his life is on the line. Full featured, and with very long battery life.
  18. begingin early next year, you can get a Treo with the Blackberry e-mail software on it.
  19. the 600 should have come with a driver disk that will allow a NMEA connection via USB. It creates some kind of virtual serial modem connection. Intall the driver disk, then after you have the 600 plugged in, switch it to NMEA mode, instead of file transfer.
  20. PPC 2002 support - I'm poor & can;t get a new ppc explort to Magellan explorist .UPT waypoint files export to explorist .gs geocache files with info in them Support for Pocket Queries in .zip format Ability to turn off downloading of background images in cache pages
  21. I thnk the garmin units have a lot more features & customizing ability. More data displayed at a time, as well as better autorouting capabilities. However, the memory features of the Explorist are very nice. You can have unlimited waypoints. I have every cache & benchmark in teh state of Utah in mine. It also inclueds 50 chartachters of hints (20 with garmin), difficulty terrain etc. You can also hold a lot more maps, with the SD slot. What would be nice is a garmin with sd slot & better geocacheing features. Garmin pros - much better gps, features etc Garmin cons - Limited memory, only 500 waypoints - your stuck to a computer more Magellan pros - Unlimited waypoint & map memory, more cache info built in not stuck to a computer som much Magellan con - Less features, info & autorouteing not so good.
  22. The explorist 100/200/300 do not have pc connectivity, so you can;t use a program to manage waypoints, unless you buy this special kit. http://pc-mobile.net/mex123.htm I'm not sure if it would void your warranty or not
  23. go for the explorist. I think the 210 is a lot of gps for just $150. I don;t know if the sporttrak can do anything the explorist can;t, but I know the explorist can do a lot the sporttrak can;t.
  24. I have an old extrex vista, have played with a vista C, and I also have an explorist 500. The garmins offer more features, more customizing, and more data visible at the same time than the explorists. The geocaching feature of the explorists is very nice. My only complaint is that I can't mark a cache as found. Rumors are that that will be fixed in a firmware update. With the legend you are limited to 500 waypoints. with an explorist, you can have millions of them. I have every geocache, and benchmark in the state of Utah in mine, complete with hints, difficulty & terrain rating & more. This is very useful. I would never have bought an explorist (won it in the be there contest), but I think I'll keep it until garmin comes out with a unit with an SD slot and a file system similar to magellan's.
