  2. The worst things I've found, all found in Phoenix urban caches used Q-Tips, used ear-plugs, used disposable gillette razor, @ silly mtn golfballs - what a joke u-bolts more ear plugs dog bisquits and treats kotex rocks you people are sick, especially when elmentary school children are caching. useless trades and cachers who left that stuff. 5. I have to agree so far every one of the AZ urban caches I went to were like that, filled with geo-trash. Then after introducing my Flagstaff friends Team_420 to geocaching, most of the AZ Outback caches are the same also. Nothing kills a group of 6 year olds desire to cache when seeing a bunch of crap after hiking uphill. I've only placed 4 caches so far and there is no geo-trash in them yet. I do a monthly cache check just for that reason. I'd rather see people sign the log. Its funny but in 193 countries ther is 89744 caches around the world. As a Archaeologist I think it kinda funny to see people hiding trash all over the planet. I wonder what my collegues will say about this activity in the future. MHO

  8. I'm wondering if you're have the same problem as i am with with Topo! crashing on an XP OS, mine is crashing every 2 min of being spawned. if not what OS are you using? I updated the program today and it got alot worse, plus with the new update the ability to save waypoints as a *.tpg file is gone. i sent a note to NG 2 days ago but still no reply. thanks
  9. You can make regions as large as you wish as long as you mod you *.ini file. I think this is where your problem is if your trying to use a 128mb card. Use the USB reader/writer to load file on your SD card manually. This is what you need to do when you make a region to load on your sd card for the meridian. Hook up your usb sd card reader to your comp and plug in the sd card then start your mapsend program. 1. Create a region, and name it something. 2. Choose the region just created to be uploaded. 3. Upload the region, at this time the region will be created and then when complete the error box appears. 4. Hit cancel, and at this time the region was created and saved in the *.img format. within the c:/program files/magellan/mapsend/export/images 5. Goto that directory and drag and drop this "region you named.img" file onto your sd card. 6. Remove card and plug the sd card into your GPS and choose the region you loaded.
  10. quote:Originally posted by mcdefjef:I leave CDs of shows from "trade friendly bands" - bands like the dead, phish, moe, etc that encourage you to tape their live shows and spread them around - so long as it is for personal, non-commercial use. Right On! The Dead started the whole trading scene, if only more bands would follow suit then there would be less of this pirated music bs. I would love to find some Dead CDs or SCI moE MMW and others. Great idea I know what I'm going to be burning and trading now
  11. I'm having problems trying to upload regions onto and sd card via a sd card reader. I keep getting a "Regions Converting Failed" message. I peeked here in the archives and found someone else had this problem with certain regions of the US, but I am in Oregon, not the mentioned "bad regions". I did the "Clay Jar" test and found my map data all seems to be there for my area on Mapsend Streets. I have made certain my regions are less than 16mb and that the Meridian formatted the card, not my XP. Any other suggestions? This is what you need to do when you make a region to load on your sd card for the meridian. Hook up your usb sd card reader to your comp and plug in the sd card then start your mapsend program. 1. 12. Being a Native Arizonan all I can say is there is no clothing that is cactus proof. All you can do is Keep your eyes on the ground in front of you and Watch your step. you don't need to stare at the GPS all the time. Have a comb or letherman type of tool with you and lots of water. On rattlers just move them off to oneside of the trail they're harmless. I've encountered them almost every time I hike and I take a stick and lift them off the trail. They'll even move on their own if you prod them with the stick. Make sure the stick is at least 4' in length. If you're so scared as to not want to play with them , then go around them, they don't attack and are not aggressive unless constantly abused. In the last 25 years of hiking the desert I've walked over them and sat next to them without realizing it until I see them. I always carry a 6' saguaro rib bushwacker tapping the shrub in front of me to alert the critters. Rattlers do not always rattle when you come upon them also. Just be careful when out in the desert and use common sense.
  13. Here's a bunch of what people have said on this forum about both units. Magellan topo software includes all street names, Garmin does not offer street names with their topo software. Magellan GPS will display terrain projection, Garmin will not. Meridian has expandable memory, Garmin models do not. Magellan models have instructions built into the GPS, Garmin models do not. Magellan is offer Rebates on all models that display a map, Garmin is offering rebates on Legend and Vista. Magellan is offering rebates on software, Garminis not. I'd have to suggest the Meridian just for the expandable memory alone. Just get the base model and a 128meg sd card. Your maps will be larger than what can fit in the Garmin. With the memory card and a usb card writer, you dont have to wait hours for umpteen megabytes to transfer through the serial port as is reported in other threads on the Garmins. Magellans with their Quad Helix Antennas, are going to get better reception over the patch antennas under tree cover. Also, for car use, the magellans are better because of the biggers screen and much bigger mapping memory. I have had a Legend for several months after 5 years with a Garmin II. A couple of weeks ago I found a Mapsend CD in a cache, and then I saw the Meridian Greens for $99.99, so I got one. Here is my comparison: Legend: Great small size (is mistaken for a cell phone) and best screen resolution in a handheld. Great for using one-handed while walking. It has a better base map and a good, intuitive interface. It is extremely accurate, and seems to process changes in direction/bearing quickly. Very good tracking features. Meridian Green/Yellow: (If you get a card and map--same usablility as Gold model.) Bigger screen (but worse resolution) and best when used in a car or boat, because it works best when vertical--because it has a helix antenna. It gets a lock better under heavy cover/trees/in vehicle. It has some nice features like a comment field for waypoints, that EasyGPS will fill with the cache name. The versatility of the SD card is impressive. You can load topo, road and marine maps all on card and switch between them. I have a 128MB card which is much bigger than the Legend's 8MB, and you can use a card reader. The proximity/anchor alarms are nice.
  14. I don't smoke tobacco, uhhh...What time is it?
  15. I'm glad I got a merigreen it only take seconds to load a 24 mb map. With a baud rate 9600. Create a region, load it on a sd card, load it into the GPSr and I'm ready to go. Sorry but I had to tease you on this point.
  16. Come to AZ there are a few surprise Mapsend Topos in caches here that I know of. I bet will be more out placed out in future caches also.
  17. The new update for mapsend topo goes from 3 to 4.20c there was no 4.20 No Map data update just interface user toys. There is firmware for the meridian listed as 4.02 Here is the link to DL the topo update: It's the slowest connection for downloading files I've ever seen. The site is ftp.kkc.tzo.com login = Magellan pw = meridian Here is a little of what the new topo update does: 1. Track profile is now bassed on gps alltitude rather than elevation data (I still not sure I like this since I could get that with my S&D) 2. You can acctually search the POI's know (cool). 3. 3 options to upload a region (sd card, hard drive, or gps units. This is the same as S&D). 4. A "color tracklog by speed" option. 5. Tracklog editing, and play back. I think you need a USB SD card reader to load waypoints/routes/tracks directly from a sd card. No reason to get so flustered.

  19. http://www.ftp.kkc.tzo.com/Magellan/index.htm It's the most godaweful slowest connection for downloading the file. No Map data update just interface user toys. Its so-so. I do like the GPS log Control center. The ftp site is ftp.kkc.tzo.com login = magellan pw = meridian
