  1. The main difference between regular waypoints and geocaches on modern Garmin units is that geocaches have extra information associated with them, such as ratings, full description and hint. Since you'd have to enter all that manually, and it makes no sense to do that because you have that info on your phone already, you're not losing anything. Another difference is that you can log field notes on geocaches (e.g. mark them as found etc). Again, since you can do that on your phone, it makes no sense to do it on the Garmin. I don't see what the big deal is.

  2. But then again, I'm in Germany using an Open Street Map map. However, I'm still pretty sure that the map is the deciding factor here.

Yes! POIs come from the map. If there's no preloaded map, there's also no preloaded POIs. Install a map with POIs and you will have POIs. Alternatively, it's possible to install additional POIs via dedicated POI files.

  3. I'm confused. If the container was stuck and could not be removed, how did you sign the log? If you didn't sign the log, why would you log a find online?

Seeing the cache does not equal a find. You have to sign the logbook.

Oh, and I thought toz's repeated ramblings had made it clear by now that there is in fact no such rule that one has to sign the log book for a smiliey.

Edit to add: I do agree however that if a container being frozen stuck in ice is considered as "needing maintenance", then it wasn't a find.

  4. When you send out the Groundspeak weekly newsletter in the recent geocaches section could you identify the caches that are for PM's only I am tried of going to the cache listing only to find I cannot look at it it is a waste of my time.

Please consider doing something so I can tell which is for PM's only or Basic

You show as a premium member. Why can't you look at them?

    Because they aren't :P

  5. Our local geocaching organisation has a facebook page...seems strange seeing all the real names! Facebook prefers that users use their own names and not an alias. Not sure how you could work around that.

I think, but I'm not sure, that geocaching/Groundspeak has a FB page. When I'm through here, I'll have to check that out...

That Is great! I would love for our local community to have their own facebook page. Probably be a lot easier to see when events are coming up. I was thinking since facebook requires a full name everyone could agree to put something like "geocaching" as their first of last name, the other name being their geocaching name. Once again it would make it easy to identify fellow geocachers.

You do realize that Facebook doesn't allow this, and the accounts are likely to get locked if they find out (or someone tells on them)?

  6. You need to send GPX files, my guess is that they are LOC ones which don't have the hint etc

On the cache page click the GPX button.

The GPX button is unavailable for basic members. "Send to GPS" still works though (and in fact also produces a GPX file), but it doesn't contain all the info.

  7. A DNF means one thing, that you set out to find the cache and didn't find it.

That's two things. Actually, the one thing that DNF means is: did not find. It has no notion of having set out to look for, or having looked for the cache. That also means that a simple literal interpretation of "did not find" is insufficient. Or otherwise, I could log a DNF on over 1.5 million caches, because I didn't find those (yet).

  8. Go to the TB's profile page and use the "grab" option from the dropdown menu. You will need the TB's tracking number to do that. You can also use that number to find the TB's profile page.

  9. I think I will try this out tonight. I never loaded spoiler photos to the Oregon before. With respect to GC.com, is this very different to how it used to be done?

There never was any real support for that. What some people did (through GSAK macros most commonly) was download the pictures off the website, geotag them and load them as regular photos to the units. With the geotag, they would then show up on the same location as the cache itself.

With that new feature, the photos can now be directly linked to the cache listing. Of course, there's still no support for that on gc.com.
