  1. hey all,

i got to thinking this weekend, and a "commemorative" colts Superbowl Champions geocoin is a cool idea. has anything like that been done? anyway, back to the state coin, is the image of the torch and stars typically reproduced with the state as a background? i saw some stickers in car windows and they have a blue indiana, but geographically correct. is that just those stickers, or is that a commonly used symbol?

the reason i'm asking is because if that is a recognized symbol, then it might look strange to have the symbol on the "back" side of the coin. i suppose though, that the "back" of the coin will look strange anyways, since it's reversed. so maybe this is a mue (?) point. i do think that the highways are better off on the side with the correct orientation. just thought i'd say that. thanks!

btw, i think the latest version is a great coin already. simple and nice. though, it won't be very shiny will it?!

  2. i know i don't have much of a say here, but i could go somewhere else for the politcal stuff....and i don't even like mitch....

anyway, the coin is looking pretty awesome for the prelim stages. a couple things to mention...

    1. i agree that the colts prolly shouldn't be on there. as others have said, then the pacers, the indians, and even the ice will have to be represented. maybe it should just be without sports teams...

    2. even though the blue highways looks good, i think the coin could look much more "rich" if it just had raised highways that are polished on a rough background. in the right light, the roads would shine on a dull background. i admit it might be difficult to make out, but who looks at a coin from a distance anyways? just a thought, after all, i don't have much coin minting experience, none, in fact, and i don't really know how that would look when finished.

    3. i think the torch and stars on the one side is awesome. now that is classy. one look says it all, really.

thanks for letting me input, and i hope this all pans out, cause it's awesome already. keep up the good dialogue.

  3. i agree that the interstate idea is coming along, and i like it much better without the interstate signs. if they (the highways) were the same metal just raised and polished (with an unpolished background?) they would stand out real well. and of course having the states first cache is a good idea.

being a fake hoosier (a transplant from michigan) i can honestly say that indiana has one of the coolest state flags. now i know that most will say that it was on last years coin and we don't want it again. BUT, why not have a recurring theme to kind of tie the coins together? i just think the torch with the stars is a powerful symbol of the state. much more so than an cardinal or a peony. personally, i think it would be cool to have on the back of the coin again. just my thoughts....

  4. howdy folks...

hmmm, the state shaped coin is pretty cool. and i do like the idea of the interstates, it's kind of neat. but i like coins that are unique shapes, so maybe i'm partial to it.

anyway, i also thought that the corn idea from last year was really cool, too. i must say that that was a good idea, just with indiana having lots of corn firelds and all. also, there is ethanol, which being the first year the indy 500 is run on ethanol, might be something to consider. maybe a tribute to the mighty soybean. just a thought.

another thing that crossed my mind when i was brainstorming the other day, was kurt vonegut. maybe a tribute to the prolific author in the year he passed would be something to consider.

    just throwin out idears. thanks!

oh yeah, and state icons (motto, flower, bird, etc.) are always good standbys. i feel that if something really cool doesn't come up out of discussion, then going with the flower or something would be easy enough. that would lend itself more to the state-shaped coin i think.

  5. man, all these people saying they are pretty rare. i think that is a skewed analysis. although i don't have solid numbers (i know it would be easy enough to find out), our local area has lots of moc's. i would argue it's less than half, but more than a quarter. i don't want to start one of these forum hooplas about this, i'm just saying that they are much more prevalent in some areas. look at northern indianapolis. lots. just thought i'd throw that in here.

  6. i'm not very good at this stuff, but i'll be watching this thread as much as i'm able, and would like to contribute my opinions. it was really cool to get my 06 coins in the mail, and would like to make it some sort of small tradition. so i would like to help in any way i can or you guys would want. thanks, and good luck!!

  7. interesting thread.

i don't take any side of this issue, but a thought did occur to me. as a novice cacher myself, i could kind of see someone thinking that having one of your bugs "imprisoned" in their cache (especially if said cache gained some sort of minor popularity as a thread topic), might be like a token of bug ownership in a way. picture it, you're at an event and this comes up..."hey, one of my bugs was trapped there for awhile", etc. even though i don't have any travel bugs, that might be kinda cool. sorry, i know that prolly makes some of you cringe to see me type that. anyway, just thought i'd share. happy caching!!

  8. i would have to agree with pretty much everything i've read in this forum log so far.

but to answer the question, i think that i try to make caching about hanging out with friends. it's like going to the bar...you just feel wierd there when you are alone. also, its fun for me to make it a long ordeal and make my fiancee struggle!!! :( just kidding...

but seriously, it's mostly about hanging out with my girl and my buds...the cache is a cool reward.

but if its a lame cache...then we go to the bar...

  9. even though i don't have any hides as of yet, and really haven't been caching all that long, i would go with archiving. i mean, unless its some cache that people have been going nuts over, and has really caused a stir, i think there are plenty of other caches around, without causing permanent damage to the area. just my 2 cents

  10. you know, as a little thought bite for ya...

on our drive from michigan to home in indana, there is this cemetary that you pass on 24. it overlooks a bend in the river and is really a nice old cemetary. however, there is one headstone off by it's lonesome and in the most scenic spot i have ever seen for a grave. it's like something out of a movie. so maybe if you could find something like that, and place the cache off of cemetary prop but so that it still is connected phsychologically. ya know what i mean, vern??

  11. i don't get the nub*** reference on either of the past posts. i suppose the former is referring to rookies, like myself, but i don't get the second. please expound vin & sue, i'm curious now. (i didn't want to spell it out in case it really meant something bad!!)

  12. just curious if anything has been tested by you guys (i mean cache ideas, not whether or not you could blind your friends with a laser pointer). although, since i'm on the topic of a laser pointer in a cache, how would you propose to see that tiny speck of light after bouncing it off a few mirrors and zig-zagging your way across a field in the dark? there would have to be 2 people at least, one to shine it in the first mirror, and the other to look in the right place. crap, i can't even see that point of light when i know where it's spose to be, let alone trying to look for it in woods/outside. again, i think it could be a really cool thing, but the execution seems overwhelming. i almost think that one of those huge spotlights is your best bet.

  13. i think the best new tool i've added to my bag since the git would be a sturdy pair of tweezers. there are some local caches that the hider recommends you bring some tweezers with you, and since we did a few that day, i will never take them out of the bag. you can pull splinters, micros, squish bugs...and they easily collapse to fit almost anywhere!!! and no, i don't work for the tweezer industry.

  14. it is true that you could face some potential problems if you are placing markers at your corners to determine lines of possession. however, if it is a matter of roughly determining your corners just for piece of mind, then who cares. if your neighbor really has an issue, tell him to pay for a survey and you'll have them marked for you at no cost! besides, it's not like you would be setting your own legal property corners anyways.

now, if you are planning on erecting a fence and you cannot find definite property corners then you need to seriously consider a professional survey. that could bite you down the road if your neighbor sells their house. i guess the answer to the original question also depends on why he/she wants to know in the first place.

  15. hey hd,

i haven't really been in this forum until today, but i am a land surveyor in indaianpolis, and have worked up in mccordsville on many occasions. though, i admit i have not seen a marker like that that i can recall. that is interesting for sure, and i might try and drive by it tonight when i'm up in noblesville. hmmm...

offhand i would be inclined to lean towards the railroad theory, but there is a lot of history in that area, as the cemetery will attest to. thanks for the info on this, i'm intrigued.

    { afterthought }

after reading back through something hit me and made me think possibly it could be marking maybe like an old power line easement. i dunno, i'll post again if i get a chance to drive by it tonight.

  16. my take is it kinda depends on where you live, and what your lot is like. do you live in a subdivision? and if so, how old is it? if it's relatively new, then property corners may be set already. borrow a friends metal detector and go to town in the general areas of the corners on the map. get a hit and dig it up.

even older farms and country parcels may have monumented property corners that you just need to find.

if you are in need of a legal survey, then you're gonna have to pay unless you know somebody that'll sign off on it.

if you just want to know where they are to build a fence, i say just try looking for corners. although, if your property is some crazy old freakishly drawn out lot, then that'll prolly do you no good. good luck.

  17. this is crazy... you know how there is that theory about how ideas can seemingly travel around the globe in an instant? this is one of those times...which seem to happen so often in this sport...

anyways, we were just brainstorming on this exact idea the other night. unfortunately, we came up with more downsides than ups. to be fair though, we haven't tested our theories yet, so i can't say whether or not it would be feasible. i guess it all comes down to the terrain and groundcover at the site. if there iis any breeze, then branches or leaves may blow into the line of sight and won't reflect onto the next mirror. which, the mirror, seems like it would be easy to spot reflecting in the dark, but i feel it could become cumbersome and if the correct type of mirrors aren't used, i don't think it would work at all.

but the idea really excites me, and we have been meaning to get out there and try some things...but excuses, excuses. i'm interested to see how your idea works out.

  18. i would also like to say that we recieved our coins and could not be happier...they are awesome. thanks to everyone involved, and especially tecmage for tthe work. we apologize for not posting earlier, but we moved and lost our conection...so we are scrambling for awhile. but thanks again, and if this continues to an 07 coin, we will definitely be on the list!! happy caching!

  19. as a follow up note to all this, i would reiterate what folks have already said....bring a regular compass with you if you are ever going after a backcountry cache. and it would be advisable to learn how to use one if you don't already know how. and if you don't know how to use one, try buyin a boy scout handbook. they are loaded with all kinds of really good info...and not just for the boy scouts either. anyone who camps or spends time outdoors should have their own copy. i highly suggest it.

  20. yeah, that's quite possible. i haven't played too much, cause honestly i don't think they are necessary. i always carry my regular compass, so don't really need the fancy elec. one. so i guess to answer the op's questions, no they are not necessary for geocaching (imho) and prolly aren't that accurate unless correctly callibrated. and if you haven't callibrated an elec compass, do it at home. cause people will laugh silly if they see you turning in circles in a field!!!! :D
