  1. For a megavent, yes. I know the rules and that's why I used 499 and 501 in my example. My question maybe should have been phrased "Why does it make any difference to anyone whether or not the EC event has mega status"? Why is this seen like an award? A great event is a great event. Cezanne For me it doesn't matter if it's got a Mega icon or not. It's too far away for me anyway. What is important for me is that there are so many people out there who'd like to go to an Earthcache event. I love Earthcaches, and I know many don't. This bit of EC-love just feels good Mrs. terratin
  2. That's a fun idea! There's a landscaped garden just outside my flat which has a few paintings on display from the time the garden was still new. One thing though that comes to mind: there are so many paintings of so many time periods. And many paintings are still made. Could I not just submit my own landscape painting as a WM? Mrs. terratin
  3. The geology seems to be limestone, thus a sinkhole is very well possible. It looks to be about 1x2.5km large, which is very large indeed. Maybe the elongated shape and the size are indeed related to faulting in the area such that water could penetrate the linestone more easily. Alternatively, the faults could have been sealing and the water had more difficulties leaving the area, thus leading to a large area of solution due to this. A map which really shows the hole relative to faults might be interesting! Mrs. terratin
  4. Yiha! I suggest the Jurassic Coast in England. Lovely villages and towns, many ECs, good transport connections and some marvelous geology! (and even the weather might be ok)
  5. Sounds like a good topic for an EC. I would only look if there's no similar EC in the neighborhood already. Mrs. Terratin
  6. Woohoo! Congratulations! Just a shame it's so far from here Mrs. terratin
  7. Wow! Great find Actually, that's not all. The whole ensemble is quite cheesy (I'm sure there's a category for that as well ) Below this is a fountain of some sort with tile-covered benches on one side showing all the communities of the island. It's.. interesting, and a weired place anyway
  8. I would like such category as I generally love maps. And 3D maps are just very neat. Here's an example from Gran Canaria, showing the topography of all the islands of the archipelago
  9. I think you're looking for the term 'Interference'. A suggestion for a question: linking this interference of the waves to the specific ripples in the sand it creates (if any). Cheers, Mr. Terratin
  10. To color the line you need to add an inline style: <hr style="color:green" /> BTW: There's no end-tag for <hr> so you just use it as is: <hr> or <hr /> in XHTML. (Thus text between <hr>some text</hr> is incorrect.) Cheers, Mr. Terratin
  11. Thanks for your answers. I think I'll have to find my own rules for logging, and especially when there are several categories for the same feature. I think I only backlog WM that were already present at the time I visited that location, and only if I actually looked at that feature (and of course have a photo). Otherwise I'd never be finished with logging. Seriously, duing my recent stay in Paris I could have logged so many fountains and other things just because I passed by and they happen to be on a photo. Or could have logged quite a few museum categories, while I only marvelled at the architecture of the building and never went inside. That just doesn't feel right for me. I'm a bit miffed though that the stats show the actual logging date and not the date on the log. It looks just wrong, but I suppose people have commented about this to GS and GS replied back there's no intention of changing this? I also published my first two waymarks now. I don't think I'll do too many as it just takes so much time (and I prefer writing Earchcaches ). But so far I enjoy Waymarking.
  12. Thanks for the input. I can find my way around XML files, it's more a problem of those being rather long and quite cluttered making it a nuisance editing them directly. I also realized there's a second separate issue: I don't like the additional waypoints naming convention. Instead of AA3BCX7 I'd much more prefer GC3BCX7_WP1 or something. Thus grouping the waypoints with the caches (which mostly is an issue on our Garmin Vista). Again I could edit that other GPX file coming with the pocket query... With that, I guess GSAK is the way to go. Or I need to build my own editor, which for sure wouldn't be finished before our next trip Cheers, Mr. Terratin
  13. *giggles* that's not too bad. Sounds almost like an average summer vacation. Try caching in roughly 122F, that's our record, of the kind "jump out of car, get cache, get quickly inside car again" Mrs. terratin
  14. We've got an Garmin Oregon 450 a few months back and apart from other nice features, we were hoping to go 'paperless'. In reality it turns out we use less paper than before, but unfortunately not completely paperless... The problem we're running into is different languages. We've been to Portugal and France recently and in both countries a lot of the descriptions are in Portuguese/French. As we're not fluent (...) in either language, I translate cache descriptions/hints and print that out, so we at least have some idea what we're supposed to be looking for and/or what the location is about. (Additionally, for some caches we'd love to add our cache notes or other comments. And there's more wishes, but those all boil down to being able to edit the cache description). I've tried using notepad++ to edit a pocket query; it works, it's just not very easy. EasyGPS doesn't seem to have an option to edit the description/hints. I tested GSAK and that would be an option, but it is quite a lot overkill for only editing descriptions/hints (and also comes with some annoying quirks, though I could get used to that I suppose). So I'm looking for suggestions/alternatives. TIA, Mr. Terratin
  15. Ha, I certainly don't log with TCTW or something similar Things only get somewhat repetitive when there are too many waymarks about the same feature. Just look at the Louvre museum. There must be close to a 100, and certainly more than 10 if you only count the ones outside the buildings. Btw, there I'm also a bit concerned about what to log. Buildings featured on a stamp? I know I don't need to collect stamps in order to log, but it still feels weired. It's easier with movie locations as I only log when I actually saw that movie (and write a negative review if it wasn't all that good) Some categories are just sooo random that I don't know what to do other than ignore them (objects named after celestial bodies, can be seen on google earth...)
  16. How do you log waymarks? Do you backlog them, and if so, also from before they were published? I'm currently trying to figure out what works best for us. Only this year alone I've been to 5 different countries and even more places. In previous years things didn't look much better. Sure I could fill up my symbol grid quickly (I guess I really like that) but I'd spend ages trying to find photos and remembering all those places I've been to, and repeat this every once in a while. So I think I will limit things to backlogging waymarks that had been there already at that time. Mrs. terratin
  17. Hi fi67, thanks for your advise. I'm very glad about it. I think you are right that maybe the existing category might be a good place even though other people will probably not participate. Lets see if the group leader would be happy with a few such submissions (important type sections, not the completely local village hill formation ). You are right however in that a dedicated collection would be really great. But as I wrote before I've been trying to find a good location for this for a while. So it doesn't matter if it don't work out. I'll have a look at it when I'm back from this trip. Have quite more than a few handful of WM to log anyway.
  18. I'm almost ashamed to suggest it, but: official stratigraphic type sections. I've been trying to find a home for a description with photo collection for a bit, and maybe Waymarking is a good home, even though it will mostly be the geology enthusiasts that might be interested in this category. Here is such example for the Triassic/Jurassic boundary: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=f4d1a107-7ae7-4c1f-b054-52a14b0c1c69 I need to check to be absolutely sure but I think here in Denmark we have the type location for the Danian Chalk near Stevns Klint, and I know a few glacial/interglacial ones in the Netherlands. See some definitions here: http://www.stratigraphy.org/upload/bak/strats.htm of course I'm willing to work for such category and wade through definitions Mrs. terratin
  19. That used to work for me, especially way back when all I had were the Oregon GPS units. This procedure is currently not solving the missing cache(s) issue with my Montana. Mr. terratin made a little discovery today. he put one additional cache on rhe oregon and simply pulled out the cable - and found out later all caches were gone again. will have to do some more testing, but maybe this error can be reproduced by not properly disconnecting the gps. i would say we always do that but today proved we dont.
  20. Intetesting! A few hours ago we arrived in Paris and wanted to pick up a few caches, next to sightseeing...and found again there are no caches on the Oregon though the pocked query is there and in the correct folder. This is the third time this happens in half a year and not too much caching. The waymarks however are there with there short description. how did you contact garmin? mrs terratin
  21. Thanks for the screen cap. No, I just used a pocket query, no software involved. If this should normally work then maybe that was one of those hickups that I sometimes observe with the Oregon. Just yesterday it refused to display my home waypoint which it usually has no problems with. Another time it refused to display almost all, but not all caches in a pocket query, which we noticed after we'd left home. The subsequent few caches transfered via the website button would display again. In the evening we noticed everything was in fact on the gps.
  22. In this case they were from Waymarking, but during our last vacation (big test for the Oregon) all child waypoints did not show any addional information, while they did show up on the old Vista
  23. If you're uncertain about a topic then do contact your local Earthcache reviewer and ask what he thinks about a specific topic. You can find him by looking at the first log of an Earthcache published recently in your area.
