  1. Thanks for the responses. Sorry I missed that info before I posted the topic. My mistake.
  2. I would like to start a webcam cache. Can anyone tell me if its ok to do them - and if so - how. (I do know that the person would need someone to be at a comp. and take a still of the person who "found it" - then have it posted on the cache page etc.) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
  3. I hope all went well with your daughter!
  4. at some point soon - I may go forward and upgrade to 2.53 - has anyone had probs like Koolaid105 has?
  5. thanks for the response - my version is 3.1.75 - so... do I already have the most up to date firmware version?
  6. I hear that the firmware update is helpful with reception. I would like to do this update - but I really am pretty fearful of losing stuff (especially because my 210 works pretty good right now), and not at all comfortable with the process of saving what i need to save to my comps harddrive. If anyone can help in the most simplistic of ways - I would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance.
  7. happy to help - but PLEASE post results in one format or another as soon as you can/have it done.
  8. I want to say thank you to everyone who responded both here and by email. I am blown away both by the speed of responses AND the generosity of people that do this hobby. Yet another reason I am happy to be doing it - and I truely believe "what goes around comes around." I will be certain to "pay it forward" one day. There were some great suggestions also - so I have several ideas as to how to pull off this unique b-day idea. (and if anyone else has any - keep on posting!) I will repost as I firm up my plans so that y'all can see how I did it - who knows - maybe others will follow suit. Thanks again one and all - I REALLY appreciate each post and email! PS - after the fact I will make sure to tell my son how this whole thing went down - there certainly is a life lesson here about the goodness of people and their willingness to help those they have never met!
  9. As I am still pretty new - I have yet to have any encounters - but if it happens - I can tell you in advance (unless they are really jerks about it) that I will just be glad they are doing their job - the opposite just wouldn't be acceptable. With that said (and I know its been linked to before, but......) what is the "official" brochure you guys print off and carry around to give to those who might question you. I'd like to do that and add it to my bag I carry when I go out on a hunt. Thanks!
  10. For the record - I have never gotten a geocoin and am a newbie all around.... with that said....... I had the idea of getting a geocoin in honor of my son's 13 b-day and putting it in its first cache on that date. Figured it would be a cool thing to do - sorta unique etc. Here is my prob - and why I need advice - I need to get it by June 13 (6 days from now) All advice on A) where I should buy it from (a company I can talk to by phone/customer service) B ) what it should be (are there generic ones I could get due to time limitations etc.? or can a special one be made quick?) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!!
  11. sounds like you have gotten some good advice and an offer of help. The people on here are great! For me - as a newbie - I try to remember that as a general rule the GPS may only get you to within 30 feet (sometimes much less and you are right on it - but that isn't often). Then its time to put the GPS away and just start looking. Good luck!
  12. how about a compromise: Go find it - using your GPS the whole way. Then sign the log as a "note" then log it as such online also. Nope - won't go towards #'s - but I bet you don't care about that. Yup - like a DNF - it will add to the history of the cache - and your friend can always look back at that and smile knowing he hid his first cache with a friend. And THAT is worth alot in my book. PS: are you overseas? civilian or mil.? Edit: Pepsi Man beat me to it - so I agree with him! (but not in the Best Soda/Pop dept.)
  13. desperate to find a cache as darkness fell last evening (and storm clouds with that tell-tale wind blew in), I started putting my hand under any rock I thought might conceal the cache - and any holes in trees that might also be good hiding spots. Probably shouldn't have - but really didn't want the DNF. (see thread "disappointed")
  14. I know in the grand scheme of things not finding a cache isn't a big deal - but I had a DNF on a fairly new cache last night - and was/still am bummed about it. I searched and searched for a small container in the woods to no avail. It wasn't a long drive from home - but far enough - and I spent an hour or so searching. I know I am new - but I do have a fair number of finds now - so not sure if it was just so well hidden I couldn't see it - but whatever the reason - it was a pretty lousy feeling failing to find it. My question: Am I the only one that feels this way when a DNF happens - is this a common thing?
  15. my wife really enjoys going out on hunts with me. If she didn't, I am sure she would be cool with me going it alone. Glad she likes it though - it has given us some more time together. Now my 13 year old son....... he acts like he is not into it - and won't go every time - but when he does go - he enjoys it for sure! What are others experience with young teen kids?
  16. congrats on your first find! I am glad the advice given here helped - you will find that there are many helpful and nice folks on this site! Enjoy geocaching with your son - and don't forget to take pics at each of the caches you find so you have something to look back on in addition to your logs! (PS: great job helping Knight2000 !!!)
  17. did a google search and found this (though the article was talking about protecting pets - I still think this line may still answer your question slightly): "Ticks are attracted to moisture, so cats should not be allowed outside following a rain or early mornings and late afternoon when the grass is wet."

for the record - Miragee always gives good advice on here - so while i do like and recommend the 210 - I am sure you can't go wrong with Miragee's suggested unit!

I am new - but have a Mag 210 and I like it. Got it online for around $100.00. Also have a friend who has one and likes it. Good luck - no matter which you choose - i am sure you will enjoy geocaching. Take along family and friends for an even better experience!
  21. there is some really funny stuff posted on this one - many have a great sense of humor - As for how you handled it Brian - I think you dealt with it just fine (not that my opinion matters to you - just saying). You were probably one of the lucky few to have such a neat experieince like that while caching - and I am sure you will remember it forever and tell many people about it - I know i would. Its the best cache you will ever find I am sure - well - the best cache that found you lol. I never cease to be amazed by God's creation! And a quick question - what type of camera do you have - because it captured a special moment especially well! Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
  22. I was thinking more about the military angle after posting earlier (see above) and I wonder if they call a cache a "cachay" to differentiate weapons stockpiles found from actual currency. Just a thought.
  23. My stepson is in the Army and it is pronounced that way in the units he has been in and had contact with - and he has had ALOT of experience with them (caches). And hey - who am I to argue with a guy who was brave enough to invade Iraq and oust Saddam, or who is overseas working on eliminating the taliban once and for all?! I do ponounce it as most do here - but when my stepson is around (which won't be for the next 12-18 months at least) I will throw in the "eh" - after all - no harm. (btw - if you want a good geocaching partner - you can't go wrong with an active military guy or recent vet - except they may not want to use the GPS much - as its not enough of a "challenge") PS: and to all who serve or have served in the military - thank you for your service to our country. Myself and my family appreciate it!
  24. how do you do real time tracking?
