  1. In my short time on this board, this is the most commonly asked question. It was my first question too! Anyway, read this thread on the comparison. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...139022&st=0
  2. Sorry, I didn't read all the pages in this thread, but here is my take. Inside my City Navigator v8 cd cover it states... Quote ".... If you personally own two Garmin GPS units, you are allowed to obtain a second unlock code for the same region for your own personal use at no additional charge." There is no expiration date on this promise that I could see. Now if they take this away from me, it constitutes bait-and-switch tactics. They sold this software to me under false pretenses. Hence, without receiving a $75 coupon or similar compensation, I see class action looming in the near future.
  3. My 76CSx didn't have WAAS enabled when I received it. Could that make a 30ft difference? Zooming out would make it look better too!
  4. Yes, format the chip and load directly onto the chip with a card reader. I got nothing but errors trying to load City Navigator via USB onto a 76csx.
  5. I assumed he meant the device on which we are posting.
  6. Alleged isn't a dirty word. We took you at your word, but it's still alleged by him because it wasn't worth the time to look it up. He was simply quoting you without verification. There are many overly-sensitive folks on this board.
  7. I have a 60CSx and have not found an extended warranty. However, doesn't Garmin offer a flat rate fee for repairs of their GPS's? Here is the link to the out of warranty page: http://www8.garmin.com/support/outofwarranty.html I find it surprising that they want $200 to fix a 76csx and only $175 to fix a 60csx. Both repair prices are exorbitant.
  8. I came across this 3rd party extended warranty while shopping for a GPS. I know nothing of this company and am not recommending them. Personally, I don't purchase extended warranties, but this is pretty inexpensive. I would Google them and search of the BBB for complaints before considering any purchase. Many 3rd party warranty companies fold before you can file a claim. This one states it's been around forever.... http://cgi.ebay.com/3-Year-Extended-Warran...VQQcmdZViewItem
  9. Careful. That is a MINI SD Card. The Garmin devices use a MICRO SD Card. Also note that the sellers illustrated in this discussion are third party Amazon sellers, and typically their shipping charges are 25% of the cost of the SD Card. Don't believe me? Attempt to purchase one, and after about 5 pages, you will come to the page that shows a $7.49 shipping charge. The usual deal on eBay is $20 for 2gb microcard and $10 for shipping. On eBay you pay fees based on mechandise cost not shipping, so you have to overlook expensive shipping and just look at the price delivered. Many sellers make money off shipping to compensate for low prices. So its best to pretend the card $28 with $2 shipping.
  10. You're ranting about nothing. You either need medication or more hobbies. Your only concern is how Garmin providing a free replacement of a (defective) part is going to cost you money later. Think about this and realize how foolish this sounds. This topic really isn't about you. Your beef is with Garmin, not Cacheoholic. You're barking up the wrong tree here.
  11. Good for you, Cache! I'm new here and Garmin's customer service has been applauded in several threads. What Rock doesn't realize(other than he forgot his meds) is the stuff they send you cost them next to nothing, but in return they get a lifetime customer and here you are spreading good words about Garmin in public forum. They came out way ahead also.... I get perks from Dell Small Business quite often and I don't feel guilty one bit because they get my business/money.
  12. I'm no expert on the workings of flash memory, by any means, and maybe someone with this knowledge can be of more help. In a nutshell, the instruction programmed into your eprom (the little computer on your camera), is limited by the technology available at that time. It can usually be updated (flashed), but the architecture has it limitations also. The memory cards increase in capacity by using layers upon layers of additonal memory. This is why the cards stay the same size, but some hold much more data. The ability to read and write to these layers is dependant on the eprom. Manufacturers could support our gear better and make it live a little longer, but what would be their incentive? They want us to spend money on new stuff!
  13. I did check the website for HP and found this. Maybe that would help. Honestly i dont even know what this is o rwhat it does. I never used a card with this carmera before. Only the 8mb internal memory. I bought the 1gb card because it was a good price. I think $14. For a few dollars less i could get a 254 (or 256 or whatever.) I figured if it could always be used for other things - like my palm or gps. At low resolution internal memory held 64 pics i think. With the sd card now it say it would hold over 11,000! We got it for high resolution and with this is does say that it could hold about 1100 pics at the highest resolution. Would it be beneficial for me to follow the info about the firmware? (Install it?) Is that like a driver for a program? Thanks for all the ideas/ help. Sensor 2.1 MP Color depth 30 bits (10 bits x 3 colors) Resolution Good 0.3 MP (640 x 480) Better 2.0 MP (1632 x 1232) Best 2.0 MP (1632 x 1232) Memory type 8 MB internal flash memory Tested with Secure Digital (SD) memory cards up to 128 MB -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The above shows the stats on your camera. It says "Tested up to 128mb". I would email HP and ask them specifically what your camera can handle in regards to memory. It might handle more than 128mb, but less than 1gb. I wouldn't attempt flashing the firmware unless they say it will help or solve other issues you might have. On rare occasions, flashing firmware can cause corrupt files and disable the item.
  14. Have you checked HP's website for a firmware update on the camera? It might be too much memory for that model/year. Did the camera have any issues with the smaller card? For a 2.1 mp camera, a 512mb card would allow ~1,000 photos at pretty good resolution. I think anything GB is overkill for this camera.
  15. You may have already tried this, but could you reformat the card? I know that is a real shot in the dark...but may be worth a try to see if it resolves the problem. Just a follow up for others who may encounter these issues. I'm sure they've been well documented here before, but my search didn't find them. I finally got an adapter to read the micro card in my laptop. In fact, it was necessary to re-format the original 128mb card that came with the 76CSx before I could load part of City Navigator. I was able to load 100mb directly onto the GPS with the USB cable. A day later the 2gb micro sd was delivered and, during the loading of the entire mapset, gave the same error message. I then formatted that card and tried again without success using the USB cable. I had to transfer the mapset directly onto the card via the card reader on my laptop. The conclusion I draw is to avoid the USB cable for any substantial file transfers whenever possible. Well, I had some frustration while doing what should be a simple tasks. The 76csx works well and Garmin maps look great, but so far the user friendly part of our relationship really sucks, for lack of a better word. Their software isn't written to follow basic install instructions as it won't completely install on any drive other than C. Loading the software onto my computer was almost as frustrating as loading into the GPS. Finally, when you buy electronics, you assume there will be peripherals at additional costs. But it adds up pretty quickly if you want a handheld with decent maps and I don't even have a car mount yet. You can easily double the cost of the GPS by the time you're finished. GPS 330 Maps 100 Case 20 MEM 30 DC 20 lens 20 protect Then there's batteries/charger. I have rechargables from an older digital camera I'm no longer using, but probably another $40-$50 investment there. I'm almost at the point where I can finally start enjoying our newest toy for caching and traveling.
  16. Make sure it is MICRO.... not MINI.... not just any old 2gb SanDisk. Ask me how I know what NOT to buy! I had to mail back two packages containing sd memory yesterday. I used to follow all the lastest techno stuff, but had no idea the memory cards came in so many flavors/sizes.
  17. Thanks guys, but I will just wait until the 2gb card shows up. I don't have any microsd readers and no adapter for my laptop to format the same. It's probably the memory card because if I change the size of file loading it seems to stop at the same point in the card.
  18. 128mb Sandisk that came with the unit. I removed and reinstalled the memory card, but had the same result at almost the exact same spot.
  19. I searched for this problem and didn't see anything relating. Have a 5 day old 76CSx and City Navigator v8. I have a 2gb microsd on the way, but figured in the mean time I will load California, Arizona, and Nevada onto my 128mb oem microsd card. The area of map I highlighted was 111mb, I then hit "send to unit". It identifies my GPS and goes through the series of Building Index, Building Mapset, and then starts Sending Mapset. At 17% it halts with an error message and tells me to check the connection and make sure the device is turned on. Well, everything looks fine on my end. When I check the status of the sd memory after, it says 18mb used 101mb free. Any clues to why it would crash when there is plenty of space left? Should I just wait for the other chip? Shouldn't I be able to load a partial map? Thanks. Terry
  20. That is a flat out lie! Magellan does not lock your units, SD-cards, maps or any other software to a single computer. Or maybe I missed that during my 5 years as a Magellan technichan (among other brands). Let's not go here. To say it's a lie is to call that person a liar. Even if the information they have is incorrect, it is not a lie. It is simply misinformation of which every forum has to a large degree. Let's be civil here.
  21. If I'm seeing it correctly, I see the 60cx for that price but the 60csx says $369.95. GPSonsale lists it for $329.99 + shipping.
  22. I believe the drivers are on any garmin software DVD too. Typically if the device is plugged into the usb, the new hardward wizard prompts you to find the driver.
  23. I have to believe that this happens because not enough people complain. They will hear from me on this issue.
  24. Yep, just installed city navigator v8 and it too gets split between drives even though I told it where to install. Now it crashes when trying to update because the files aren't all in one place. You'd think for the price we are paying for maps it would be capable of very basic instruction. Very, very poor programming.
