  1. Thanks for the suggestions. I might forgo the pipe container as I did not think that people would think it is a bomb. My thought was to teach some basic physics about how the unit works, etiquette, discuss cache sizes and show examples of those and that there are some where a puzzle must be solved in order to find the cache and that some are on the side of the roads while others are at the tops of mountains. I will print out some cache descriptions and hopefully a large printout that has a map of the area with caches listed. There is a patch associated with this activity "They" (the infamous they, the organizers or district people) want the scouts to get from the geocache. Obviously that is not possible with a micro cache so I was going to put a playing card or something that could be stuffed there that could be redeemed for the patch. Has anyone ever spotted caching supplies like Official Geocache stickers or trackables at brick and mortar outdoor stores or is mail order the way to go?
  2. I have been asked to teach several small groups of Webelos (9 and 10 year old boys) about geocaching at an upcoming event. I have 14 minutes with each group and they need to find a cache in that time. I am going to hide multiple caches in the park area where this takes place. I figure that I will use an ammo can, some tupperware, some pipe for a few of the caches but from there I am at a loss. Is there anything else that I should use to give an idea of container types? What do people use for micro caches these days now that film containers are pretty much nonexistent? Thanks for the help.
  3. While I was loading some more rest stop caches onto my unit, I read some of the logs. One of the logs read that an individual was on his way to get a specific TB out of a cache and the TB was picked up by someone else before hand and took the TB way off course and that we all need to look up the TB missions before we take them. As I have found trackables with no mission attached only to read it online, I was wondering if I had a lack of etiquette in taking those without knowing where they were headed. As I am not a premium member, I have no idea what TB or other trackables might be in a cache before I get there unless I load stuff same day (the info is not sent to my GPS). This trip is not for a few weeks, but if I don't load the caches now, it won't happen.
  4. I have a bunch of rest stop caches loaded onto my GPS. The thing is, I don't always stop and if I do stop I don't always have time to cache. So, I don't read anything about the cache until I am right there which means I can't see if the TB has a mission unless that mission is somehow attached to the TB. So, if one does not know the mission of the TB should one just leave it in the cache?
  5. Thanks Rovers. I have seen those pages and actually read up on your binoculars which seem nice. Unfortunately, they don't meet the waterproof criterion. FWIW- porro prisms should not have any more moving parts (to the best of my knowledge). Two different scope tubes that move to change interpupillary distance but with relatively fixed optics inside. I will just keep looking.
  6. Anyone up on their binoculars? I am appalled at how much sales folk at the local stores are not up on their binoculars. I am also upset that when I have emailed some big e/retailers that they never answer my question. Here it is. Is a porro prism design better than a roof prism design as it has fewer pieces and not as complicated? Or, does everyone love roof prism so much that there is more effort put into those and there is really no difference between two sets of binoculars that cost the same but one is porro and the other is roof? I am trying to get a decent pair of waterproof compact binoculars for putting in a pack or using while in a canoe (under $200). I really want to get my hands on some to try but that is proving difficult.
  7. Hmmm. I have data saved from a flight in a small plane with my father. I don't know how to post it, though. It is a couple of Print Screen shots from DeLorme Topo 8 (I use a PN 20) pasted onto a word document. It is pretty slick. It shows speed and elevation changes as well as geographic contours of what where we were flying (Salt Lake City). If you want to see it shoot me a PM with your email and I will send it along. (Or if someone knows how to post a word document or pull images off of it I will just post it here).
  8. I have had the same problem. I just tried reinstalling the plug in and that got me no where. Looks like I need to head on over to the DeLorme forum and see if there is a fix in the works.
  9. Whoever you are (I know that you're not tom) I just tried sending a cache and it worked. So, who knows. My default is set to DeLorme now and I do not have to select a tab. I just click the send button and I'm done. My previous problem was that I had to select the DeLorme tab and there was a server error when that happened. Post your OS and browser for the fix it folks and let them know when the error occurs (when you click send or when you select the DeLorme tab).
  10. I guess I should have put this in the functional issues post from the update. Having not chached since August I didn't know when it went away.
  11. I thought of putting this in the appearance post but that seems to be more about white space. Hopefully, this is where it goes. If I remember correctly (and I very well might not) I recall that when looking at a cache description I could just put my cursor on an attribute icon and a ribbon/banner (I forget what they are called) would appear telling me the significance of that icon. I thought the same held true for the log icons (DNF, Needs Maintenance, etc). I believe that this is not an issue for people who regularly use the site but more for people who are new or not regular users. I see the link to the attribute definition page is in a prominent spot so people can find the definitions and I would leave that as is. However, I would bring back the mouse over definition option that keeps people from having to go to a new page. Or, am I crazy and it never existed? (If it didn't, I would recommend it as an addition.) Just in case it is me or my computer- Win XP Firefox 3.5.7
  12. At 5:26 PM MST today it was fixed. This is the "duplicate thread" with some more issues discussed. Edit- I did not have to change and/or download anything. I already had the plug-in and when it allowed me to select DeLorme without the internal error the cache went right over.
  13. I have a PN-20 with current updates. However, as the message is an internal server error, it is not the device. Without any device plugged in to the computer one should be able to click on "Send to GPS" and then get the pop up with the Garmin plug-in option and the DeLorme tab to select (unless previous settings have been made). No device needed to get anyone that far. As some folks have not had issues sending those caches to their GPS units it could be something with the way my computer talks to the web site. However, I am at a loss.
  14. Really, when did that change come about? Previously, I was able to use that button as a regular member but only send one cache at a time. Had to have been since August that the change was made. I discovered the web page forum and made a duplicate post over there (I should probably delete this one) and the moderator is looking into it. No mention of the premium member requirement.
  15. Windows XP and Firefox 3.5.7, both regularly updated. When the Garmin tab shows up it looks fine (it does not detect the plug-in as I have never installed it) and when I select the DeLorme tab the problem arises. Miller's Crossing GCJWCD UM Free Time waster GCHK5X As it is an internal server error, I don't think it is a cable issue. Copy and paste. Server Error 500 - Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed. Edit- for the record I have tried rebooting everything.
  16. I posted this over in GPS and technology but I am guessing it most likely belongs here. I am planning on a little caching today which will be the first time in months. When I tried the "Send to GPS" feature and selected the DeLorme tab I got the internal server error message "there is a problem with the resource you are looking for and it can not be displayed." Has this been gone for a while and I have been gone too long or is there something I can do? I tried it from a few caches and the same story from each one. I am not a premium member nor do I use the DeLorme cache register program.

  18. I will throw in that you should look at the DeLorme units. The Topo software lets you create routes on it (road or trail) and then throw it onto the GPS (for which you can put very detailed maps on it) and there are bike mounts for it. I have no experience with their bike mount so I can't comment on how well it works. They also support paperless caching. I have a PN-20 and I like it a lot. If I could afford it I would spring for the 30 or 40 (faster processor). Like JBnW said, though, there are a lot to choose from.
  19. Something like this in something like this.
  20. Time Traveler, just go through a few pages of the forums and you will read plenty. Also, on the main pages (possibly the profile page) there are GPS reviews. Go through those, then come up with some specific questions and you'll get a good response. R. Roddy, Shirley and Deadhead, I have a PN-20 and I am not a premium member. I can send to gps and it sends everything but the description and the hint over. In their stead I get an ad saying I should become a premium member and then the site will undo the extra work that they have done and allow the description and hint to be sent over. The name, location, terrain and difficulty (and some of the logs) all show up in the meantime, though.
  21. I have a PN-20 and I like it a lot. If I had the money I would have sprung for the nicer one. I can't compare it to the new Garmins, though, as I have not used those. You mentioned that you wanted it for traveling. What do you want it to do when traveling? Where are you going? DeLorme maps are limited outside the US and Canadia. That could be a factor in your choice. Any day now (unless they get delayed again) the new Lowrance series should be available. Take a look at those as well; they look pretty sweet.
  22. Also, when you manually enter a waypoint you can select the geocache symbol from the menu and the unit will give you the choice of leaving it on the waypoint page or moving it to the geocache page.
  23. The "Uh oh" that Nami mentions is due to the number of threads on this forum that are people saying one brand is good and the other is bad and then fans of the respective brands taking offense and a large pissing mach ensues. I am not trying to start such a match but will tell you my experiences. Anyway, I am happy with my DeLorme. I have not used an eTrex with the high sensitivity receiver so I can not directly compare it. The old eTrex Legend that I used was a just fine unit. I think most people who are not "obsessive" cachers could be happy with an eTrex. I almost got an eTrex and I am sure that overall I would have been happy. However, I like my DeLorme much more. It has lower reviews on Amazon and I think here on GC but I like it; it works for me. If possible, you should go to some sporting goods store and try out a few and find what you like. DeLorme definitely has some things I don't like about it. It does have considerably shorter battery life than the eTrex. I like the mini USB connection on the eTrex (on all but the base model eTrex) more than the proprietary DeLorme design but it works. I have never lost a signal with my DeLorme but I have never been in extreme tree cover with it, though. I really like the Topo software that comes with the DeLorme. It does take a while to learn how to use it (the software) but it is pretty slick. The DeLorme unit itself is slightly more complicated than an eTrex in its use (according to me). However, it is not that much more complicated and it didn't take long to figure it all out and set it up how I like it. People also fight about the map quality of both units and that is something I don't even care about nor have investigated. Lots of people here have had problems with DeLorme units and in turn lots of people have had problems with Garmin. It is often said that all different units are bad in their own way. Just get the one that is the least bad for what you want.
  24. You might consider taking a look at the DeLorme PN-20. There is a $15 difference between that and the Venture HC. I have used a different eTrex and I liked it but I have been very happy with my DeLorme purchase.
