i'm not sure what geocaching ready means, but i know that on my magellan explorist 500 i can put the location of the geo cache plus some notes and stuff... maybe that's what they mean. and BTW, at beachcamera.com they've got the 500 for sale for only 175, free shipping, and the 10 dollar offer for mapsend topo 3d... another 6 or 7 dollars for the lithium-ion battery from ebay and you're set, for less than 200 bucks. GL with your shopping.

i suspect that it is; i have the 500le and the fit is TIGHT with the AAA's in. There's a small gap between the cover and the unit itself. If they were going to redesign the cover for the AAA's, they would probably have made it fit better.

i just got mine (500 LE) and i love it. It's my first GPSr, and was a little intimidating, but reading everything i could find here helped a lot. I picked a pair of the motorola batteries for $3.99 each plus s+h on ebay, and purchased the $9.99 topo 3d software. can't wait to hit the trails with it.
