  1. As far as socks go, get rid of your cotton socks and get smart wool socks. They are blend of lycra and wool and will eliminate any chafing or blisters. I've worn them in Nevada when the temps were in the high 90s with no problems.

I can't believe how many folks swear by wool socks in the winter. But honestly I got thinking about how sweaty and soaked my feet bget in my cotton socks, and that wool dosen't absorb water, and it makes a alot of sense.

  2. Also,thanks to Totem Lake,I may have found a new hat. :)

TotemLake has more than a few enemies; it may not be in your best interest to wear this hat in some places.

Hush now. I can't create decoys if you let that out. :):)

    :):)

I'm pretty sure no one's going to bother me....

    Right..?RIGHT???

  3. This is the closing post for "Economics 101, How to afford caching," a thread opened in response to people complaining about not being able to afford a premium membership.

We went through all of this in the other thread. Since this isn't an economics website, I'm going to close this thread in favor of the ones about geocaching. :wub:If you'd like to discuss economics, feel free to do so in the Off Topic section of the forums.

You'll need a premium membership to view it, however. Sorry.

    Oh, the irony... :)

    :):):):):):););)

    THAT is awesome!!!

  4. I have a few storys....true storys

Once a man put a cache in a cannon on his town square.

There was a big parade includeing the cannon,

and then the mayor said that since he liked the cannon so much,

they put it in City Hall.

Now geocaching in City Hall anyone???:D

Uh bud...they've got a whole forum sub catagory for this.

  5. A discussion from this thread made me realize alot of things about clothing.

What is the must haves for winter or summer hiking as far as clothing goes?I'm always looking for good hunting clothing,as I do more walking while hunting than sitting,so I think a lot of it would crossover nicely from hiking to hunting.Wool is my standard winter clothing. It's a little heavy, but the keeps you warm when wet factor is a BIG plus out in the snow, plus the silence factor. As far as warmer weather goes,I thought cotton was ok until reading that thread.I'm reviewing my outdoor clothing arsenal.

Also, thanks to Totem Lake,I may have found a new hat. :D

  6. Thanks for the input. Anything else that I'm missing? 2 gig card, both topo and nav, 60gsx. Oh yea lots of cash. Has the topo 2008 been released yet. Also any thoughts as to where to get it all in one spot at a package cost or good deal? Grouchymedic

invisible shield screen protector--no sense in scratching up that pretty new screen.

Ditto.I've got some waiting at the house right now for all three of my GPSr's screens.

  7. You should give the GPSr a good 20 to 30 minutes to get a god fix if it has been off and moved more than 700 miles or so.

This is true.I bought my GPS V in Iraq, and the first time I turned it on it took FOREVER to get a signal...but it did.Now it only takes like 10 seconds in a clear sky view.

  8. My worst-case scenario was when I got laid-off for Christmas (what a year). I was behind on rent, and the bank took what was left of my money because I let it drop below $20. I'm still bitter about that. Nothing like trying to retrieve enough money for a meal than to find out that someone better-off took it all. I remember that month of riding my bike around applying anywhere and everywhere for a job, when some homeless guy came up to me and begged for money. I had exactly two cents and a Jolly Rancher to my name. I gave him the piece of candy. I had planned to eat that for lunch. I ended-up eating from the mercy of friends, and I eventually found a job.

Yeah, I can see myself getting all concerned about not being able to go after premium caches....Yeah, right.

    That sucks more.

  9. So you two are saying that libraries are a bad thing?

    I dont get that.

    No,

You only inferred it as that. My point was your free internet access is payed for by someone else. Geocaching is also payed for by its customers (advertisers, premium members, and merchandise buyers) .

Should these customers also subsidize the regular members any more than they already do? Is it socialism you want, where everyone gets the same product?

    what he said.

    Basically.

  10. For the vast majority of us we have some capacity to make decisions that benefit us, or we can reach out to people who can help us make those decisions. In this caring, giving, loving nation we almost have to consciously make and carry out bad decisions to get truly poor.

    Outstanding observation.

  11. Remember, just because you don't think it's a "bad word" or "not AS bad a word AS"...doesn't mean it's ok to say.

Others may find offense to it.

Yes what WAS I thinking. This is 21st century America after all. <_<:(:):D

  12. Briansnat once suggeted the following:

The person approaching says "Ho arst ye a geocacher". The correct confirming response is "Yay, a geocacher am I". The two geocachers then approach each other and put their right arm on the other person's left shoulder and standing at arm's length, begin to skip around in a circle chanting (very loudly) "Geocachers are we, runny munny me, taki-tiki-takey, yaba daba hee". They do this for no less than 3 minutes, after which they join in the hunt.

Me I just go up and introduce myself and ask if they mind if I join the hunt or if they would rather wait.

    DANG IT!!!!

And I JUST changed my freakin' sig line quote!!! <_<:(:):D:o

  13. This is a lesson for all those who just simply can't stand that there is some part of caching they "can't afford", like $30/year for a premium membership:

No one can afford every single thing they want. Even rich people have budgets- they decide how to spend their money before they spend it. They DECIDE what they can have and what they cannot. All-in-all, if there is any such thing as a "secret" of getting rich, that is it. Rich people (and those who eventually WILL be rich) know how to say "NO" to things they cannot afford and how to change their circumstances in order that they can at some point say "yes." In a word, successful people PRIORITIZE.

    <Snipped for shorterness>

It is one thing to do without something one cannot afford. But it is quite another, in fact IMO, the epitome of immaturity and covetousness, to seek to deny that thing to everyone else just because one cannot afford it.

This thread needs to be in the FAQs so we can be spared from the woah is me-ness.It's 30 dollars.Either cough up or stand down.

Life is simple when you cut out the bullhonkery.

Outstanding.I've found a new sig quote.

You may be unaware of just how much some are struggling for the simple esentials.

would you be able to scrape $3 out of a food budget of $5 for a week?

The "go without" option then becomes Plan A.

If you have a $5 budget for food a week I don't think you should be out there buying high tech toys like GPS units.

    Basically!

    Great thread Confucious Cat!

    Ditto!

Call me cold-hearted, or an evil conservative, but I strongly oppose any entitlement for cachers who demand to find PMOCs without paying the "3 bucks." It's all about priorities, and making sacrifices in other places.

There are lots of activities that I would love to do, but are not in my current budget. Do I get mad because other people can afford rappelling gear, or who own expensive backpacking gear? The answer is a steadfast no.

Do I currently think cachers who don't pay for the premium membership are "bad?" No I don't, but I don't think they should complain because they can't find "every cache."

Basically what KF said. We're such cold hearted evil conservative cachers because we think people should do what they can afford. What WERE we thinking. <_<

  14. I generally pull out my .45 pistol and start waving it in the air and shout "Hey all you Muggles...attention please...anyone seen a green ammo can in the vicinity of these shrubs here?".

Ahh so you went to that class as well I see. <_<

  15. I'm also trying to figure out why you have a picture of a man and a woman dropping a child into a bear trap??? <_<

it's the cover of the "American Idiot" single by Green Day. It fits with the music forums i frequent. when i came here i put it as usual though it doesnt really fit for this site. maybe ill change it.

Just a good natured stab is all.If it works for you,go with it.

  16. I would certainly never use "curse words" in a forum post, but I used what I thought was a very mild word (the one that begins with "d") in a forum post (and the first time in almost 800 posts that I used this word) and was amazed to see it auto-replaced with "dadgum" (which makes sense too and I have no problem with!).

I wouldn't use them either but dadgum?(You know which one I mean,it changed it on me)I mean really now.Thats not a bad word.:rolleyes::unsure:

  17. I referenced your signature. While many may abuse the welfare system, others may need it and are entitled to it. After all, if they have worked- then they have paid for it.

Tell that to the third generation welfare recipient who has never worked a day in their lives, or to the thousands of illegal aliens who collect benefits for their "anchor babies."

Since this issue gets beat to death, I felt it was time for the obligatory Markwell.

Ahh the old forum search.Imagine that.

  18. Or why not just let the thread slip off the page quietly?

Why not bring back the feature? The removal was punitive over some dolts re-enabling the thread to respond one more time. Surely we've learned our lesson?

Gosh, TotemLake...and I thought you've been around here a while... People learning their lesson? Riiiiiiiiiight..as soon as they can, they'll abuse the feature again.

Sadly enough,as this was posted while I was replying to TL's post.I agree. B)

I agree. There've been times I wanted to close a thread myself.
