  1. Tried using Firefox and my android phone. Same results as everyone else. I guess there was an update that was not tested enough. Hopefully it will be corrected shortly.
  2. I may be forced to change my current paperless approach. I currently use a Etrex Legend and a Palm M515. I enter the data buy loading pocket queries into GSAK. If I purchase one of the Oregon GPSs do you still need GSAK or similar program or can you load pocket queries directly from geocaching.com. Thanks
  3. Think I figured it out. Had to change the gpx version from 1.o to 1.0.1 in my preferences. I got this info from a pop-up when I updated GSAK.
  4. Not sure what is happening. When I try to enter a pocket query zip file into GSAK I get a message the the "this file does not pass xml validation and will be ignored". I have used the same process for several years and it worked fine. I have GSAK version 7.7.13.4. After making a pocket query a zip file is sent to my email account, I double click and it should load into GSAK or at least it use to. Any suggestions. Thanks
  5. I have just purchased a Etrex Legend HCx and have a question about the Micro SD Card. It came with a 128 MG memory card. I have found a 2 GB and 4 GB SD memory card on-line. Both talk about trans flash which I have no idea what that means. I am just wondering if I can buy a higher capacity memory card and is it compatible with my GPS?
  6. I was going to use Map Source to load my local town into my GPS unit. Before it loaded the map I received a message from MapSource that said "You are about to erase map data that was pre-programmed by Garmin. If your GPS does not use removable data cards, you may later retrieve pre-programmed data that is erased by going to Garmin's website at..." Is this talking about the base map or some other map that may be loaded on the GPS unit. The only thing on my eTrex Legend is the base map. I for sure do not want to mess the base map up. I tried to find out something on the Garmin Website, but I the help seemed to not be working. My owners manual does not say anything about loading maps hurting the base map, but I want to be sure. So if anyone has loaded mapsource data into their eTrex Legend I would like to know your experience. Thanks
  7. Thanks for the replies. I will see if I can figure any of them out..
  8. I would like to find geocache along a route, but I am having trouble. The instructions say to use google earth to create the route. My problem is that I do not want to go the route that is created by google earth and I do not know how to change the route. My question is can you use another mapping software to create the route or is there a way to make google earth map the route that I want to take? Thanks
  9. I finally got a serial adapter that works. I ordered one from USBGEAR. I talked with them before ordering and was assured that it would work with Vista . I received it today and had no problem getting it to work. Thanks for the help.
  10. Thanks for the replies. I think I will try the adpater that Coggins recommended, since it does say that it is Vista compatible. I had earlier thought about adding a serial port to the computer, but I also want to use it on my Vista laptop that does not have a way to add a serial port.
  11. I can not get my Legend to talk with my new computer. The computer has Windows Vista and it does not have a serial port. I spent over an hour on the phone with Garmin last night trying to get it to work with out success. I was told that I might could buy another usb to RS232 adapter cable and it may or may not work. So I am thinking about getting another GPS that works with USB. I have already asked on this forum about what adapter cable to get, but the reply was only moderately hopeful. If anyone could tell me that where they bought an adapter for their GPS and that they got it to work with Vista, I will be happy to check out that route instead of looking for a new GPS. If I need to buy a new GPS, I want to find out what others think about the eTresx Vista HCx. Thanks
  12. I am just about to give up trying to use my Garmin eTrex Legend with my Vista computer. I am thinking about getting a eTrex Vista HCx. If I had asked on this forum before I bought my Legend, I may have decided on something else. So I do not want to make the same mistake again. What are the pros and cons of the Vista HCx? Or should I be looking at something else? Thanks
  13. If you are really into to geocaching I would recommend not going with the least expensive. If you ever want to download the cordinates into your GPS devise I would also get one with USB and not a serial connection. I have just learned this lesson. I spent an hour last night on the phone with Garmin trying to get my Legend to talk with my Vista PC and never got anywhere. The newer PCs and laptops do not have a serial port and this could cause problems. Just my lessoned learned. Good luck.
  14. I was not using mapsource. I was just trying to download coordinates directly from Geocache.com. I did run the Garmin test web page and it would not acknowledge the GPS device. I have just about determined that the adapter I bought does not support windows Vista. I have been pointed a couple places that state that their adapters do support Vista so I guess that I will try one of them. My adapter was made by Prolific. No instructions came with it, but I did get them to send me the drivers. However XP was the highest version of window that it supported. I have requested from them information concerning XP, but I have not heard back from them yet. This sure is a learning experience. Thanks for the help.
  15. Thanks for the replies. I will check both sites out and decide which one to get. Went geocaching with the wife yesterday and had to hand load the coordinates so I need to do something quick.
  16. I purchased an adapter which I found out that the driver did not work with Windows Vista. Can someone tell me where the purchased their adapter for their Vista computer. My new computer does not contain a serial port to connect the GPS to, so I must find an adapter or else I will have to enter coordinates one at a time. Thanks
  17. I have now emailed the place I bought my adapter from asking about the driver, but I have not heard back from them. I have also been checking for another one if I can not get this one to work. What brand and where did everyone else buy their adapter? It seems that all I can find is for Windows XP, but not for Vista.
  18. Ok, I let windows go out and find and load the driver. I verified in control panel/systems/device manager that the com port was there. It still did not work. This morning I tried it on my VISTA laptop. Still does not work. On my laptop, I had to download the Garmin Communicator plugin. While loading that program it lead me to download Garmin USB drivers. Which I tried to attempt. In the process, it had me to plug in my GPS, but it would not recognize that the GPS was there. Any other ideas?
  19. I have a Garmin Etrex Legend that worked fine with my old XP computer, but I have having trouble getting it to work with my new Vista computer. The problem is that the new computer did not come with a serial port for connecting the RS232 cable. I purchased an adapter that I found on the internet, but I can not get it to work with my computer. When connected the computer finds new hardware, but seems to want a driver which I do not have. I have tried downloading the USB drivers from Garmin, but that does not seem to work. Any ideas? Thanks
  20. I am in the process of trying to decide if I want to buy a PDA for geocaching. I am not sure that the PDAs that I am considering, Palm M515, is compatible with Windows Vista. I do not want to buy the PDA and then find out that I can not transfer from my PC to the PDA. Does anyone know if I will have a problem? Thanks
  21. I am new to Geocaching and am trying to learn the ropes. My wife and I could not locate a geocache where we were vacationing. After coming back I noticed that a Stop Sign icon was next to the cache symbol. What does a stop sign mean? The cache number is GCX1J2. Thanks
