  1. You have to admit though, you seem to have one of the sharpest personalities here that often rubs folks the wrong way. I'm sure that plays into responses too. I'd like to say "maybe it's just me" but I don't think* that is necessary.
  2. That's sick. Apparently they feel they can do whatever they want. Wait. They can. What is more disturbing is that these caches aren't maintained. I can see why you would want to chuck them if they were filled with garbage. Put some H1N1 in that cache... Now I am sick. I can't really see that much could be done unless the authorities got involved. They do have a good point about protecting the area from us destructive cachers.
  3. Reverse this scenario. I bet your Mom could read a map or a book. Kids today. They can't live without their phone, video games, text messaging, facebook, twitter, my space, or GPSr. To me that just makes them look kind of loser-ish. I have an acquaintance who is 20. He gradumicated HS too. He asked to use my GPSr for a road trip across a few states. I told him to use a map instead as I traveled for work weekly in 2000-01 and always used a map. He said "You don't understand. It doesn't work like that anymore." Stupid kids. (I'm 33.). I don't need a mobile phone or texts. I can read. I don't use FB or MS or tweet. I don't need TV or video games - but I do like them. My son insisted that he needed to use a computer to do research for a report. I told him the internet isn't always accurate and he should use an encyclopedia. I got the same comment the 20 yo gave me- "Dad, It doesn't work like that anymore." A couple of months ago I was walking through my daughters school and it seemed like every Mom was on the phone. To myself I said "Geez. Could you live without your phones?" A mom who is quite a number of years older than I heard me and said "I would die. I really would." Turn the phone off and tell your kids to stop carrying around that darn video game system and watch where they are walking. I hate that in the stores... I am getting old and crabby I guess. I think technology will be part of the downfall of this world. *And yes, I know I spelled graduated incorrectly.
  4. It's about time for a bump. I'm really itching to hide some caches. Inspire me.
  5. Is that in the lexicon? Thanks for the new word! I love it!
  6. I know nothing about your issues but what you reported is great news. I look forward to more of this.
  7. This always gets me when I'm caching with another cacher. If you make the find, how can I log it as I find? I know where it's at but only because you found it! That is why I do not like caching in big groups. (Unless it is my wife and 11 of her clones. ) *spln'
  8. Besides the Oregon all of the others are rather low dollar units. At $235 the PN-40 is cheap enough I could stomach spending the money. I wish I could just see the interface in action.
  9. Maybe TPB should consider a thank you system of sorts for the forums. You see it in all sorts of other forums. If SB or TAR or BD or KC or anyone says something helpful then they can get a simple thanks. I'd post it in another thread but those suggestions always seem to get kicked aside by work arounds and such. Too much work.
  10. This all sounds great. What would be greater is a $50 rebate that would work with the $235 Amazon price. (Keep dreaming!) Besides our 2 car GPSr units I have 7 handhelds. My wife quite reasonably asks why I want another one! I thought the Oregon would be the best of the best- the pinnacle of handhelds. Yeah, right. I am so close to pulling the trigger on that... Those of you that have them, do you like it? I see the most recent reviews on the geocaching site seem to be very positive.
  11. Aha. The reason why we don't use hints. It ruins the rating.
  12. Thanks for the tip. Now I see the events I considered going to.
  13. Sounds like a serious guideline violation. I sincerely doubt the phone company gave permission to drill holes in their equipment and detach the ID tag. I hope you issued a NA or at least reported what you found to the reviewer. Hadn't done that yet but you are right, I need to get to it. It can create some serious local angst. I'd think twice about it. Unless it is a real issue I ignore the caches that violate guidelines. You will be called the cache police and all that.
  14. A nano is a micro. Some people think that a nano is an unknown or deserves another size description. I've noticed searching for a lot of unknown caches described as nanos that are just micros.
  15. -A forum is for expressing your opinions, idea, thoughts. -Do not assume that posters post to increase their post count. This is something that we cannot control. That is the same as assuming that someone who has 10k finds is in it for the numbers. This may or may not be true. Maybe they just enjoy caching/posting.
  16. This is a great thread. Once in particular I was guilty of this. I don't remember specifically as it was a year or two ago. I do know this, it is not usually what I say- but how I say it. Some of the local cachers here use forums and I have heard that they avoid here because of what you mentioned. The local forum is primarily a social forum. I'm much more interested in caching than being sociable forums that discuss geocaching in particular. At least one local has made it very clear that they don't care what the geocaching forums say regarding what is typical geocaching protocol. Maybe that is because of the perceived unwelcome atmosphere here. I am so sick of someone posting something and then seeing a stinky comment about the search feature and posting 6 threads and the links that cover that persons question. Regulars know what I am talking about. Share the link to the answer instead of criticizing. Snarky comments aren't so bad as long as they are directed the right way.
  17. I can't remember that. Geocaching just seemed to make sense to me. I wasn't surprised at any skirts for the lamp posts or anything like that. Our 10th find or so was a film can attached to an evergreen with a cable tie. That stumped us. Once I figured out that hiding technique it all seemed like just another caching day. *Edit to add that we only have 600+ finds so we are relative newbies too.
  18. So I'm thinking about grabbing one of these. A few questions I can't seem to find the answer to. Can you swap out GPX files? From what I can see it only holds 1,000 caches? (Yikes! -That's worse than my Oregon!) One of the flaws of my Oregon is the inability to swap out GPX files. I hate it! When I cache with my kids we discard all micros. It makes it so much easier to just load the appropriate PQ. (GSAK helps.) This makes little sense if you plan on traveling for a lengthy trip too. What the heck is Garmin thinking? You can only load multiple caches at once if you buy their program? Is the program for only one computer? Do you have to buy one for each computer you use? I found the wiki confusing. Can I just use GSAK to load multiple caches and avoid the buying of Cache Register? Can you sort caches on the unit itself? Say I don't want to find any micros or I don't want to see any multi-caches. Does anyone know of a video where I can see the unit in use for geocaching. I am wondering how the screens work. I can't seem to find one. Thanks!
  19. Also not showing in event PQ's. Now I can't seem to find the events I was interested in attending.
  20. That sounds like a cache I would enjoy or put out. Different strokes for different folks I suppose. This sounds like another creative hide! The nut is the cache container. ---- The one I despised the most was an empty, rusty skoal can at a McDonald's which was hidden by a teenager who was infamous for stinky hides.
  21. It looks great! Thanks for taking the time to make a nice container! Is that a Sterilite tote? It looks like it. If it is I don't think it will hold up well at all. They are not watertight and they are brittle. It should be something along the lines of storing food items as those are meant to be more water/air tight. The leaves look good but they probably won't last. They will disintegrate. You could just do maintenance on it regularly. Nothing wrong with that. It's better than nothing. What is under the leaves? That may be adequate too. You learn from experience.
  22. You can put notes inside the caches urging others to trade up or trade even. Fortunately I have not seen this in any of our caches. We try to keep them clean and well stocked with items kids would like. Occasionally we see logs from people that certainly don't trade even. Once someone took about $7 worth of stuff and left a item worth about 25 cents. They were newer. The one that burnt me the most was a seasoned cacher that took a NIP flashlight and left their signature lucky penny. How even. I don't know what folks trade but I don't often open a cache of ours and see it filled with crap. In fact often I see it filled with the items we stocked it with. Many times it looks like that stocked ammo can hasn't even been touched.
  23. I own an Oregon and I do not think I would buy another one. It is adequate but it has some major downfalls IMO. It does not charge via a cable. I would like it to do this with AA rechargeables. I have a Magellan that charges with a special battery pack this way and I do not like it. I can't easily charge batteries and I would have to carry a special battery in the field to change. I want to buy a DeLorme or Lowrance or a Magellan but I don't need it and money is hard to come by. Plus I have about 5 other units that I don't need too!
